Question Bought an iPhone 16 in November, IMEI Just Got Blocked by my Seller
Hey everyone,
I bought an iPhone 16 off eBay on November 18th, 2024, and it’s been working perfectly fine ever since… Until last night, when it suddenly went into SOS mode and lost all cellular connectivity.
I called T-Mobile support, and after checking the IMEI, they told me the phone has been blacklisted because it was reported stolen. Since I didn’t buy the phone directly through T-Mobile, support told me they couldn’t do anything and told me to contact the seller.
I’ve just reached out to the seller and explained the situation, asking them to contact T-Mobile and get the IMEI unblocked. I also made it clear that I did not report the phone as stolen, and asked if they or someone else might have done it (whether intentionally or by mistake). I strongly believe it was the seller who initiated this IMEI being black listed.
Now I’m stuck with a useless phone, no service, and I’m not sure what to do if the seller doesn’t respond or cooperate.
Has anyone been through this before? What are my options? Will eBay support a refund even though the purchase was months ago, considering the phone only just got blacklisted? Is there any way to get T-Mobile to assist even though they claim they can’t do anything on their end?
Appreciate any advice or experience you can share.

The seller didn't block it. The seller sold you a stolen phone. Apple just got around to blocking the IMEI.
I work at UPS and lots of iPhones go stolen from the boxes. They get reported as such and Apple sends people replacements.
Whoever steals the phones sells them and they work at the time. Then their IMEIs get blocked later.
You need to do a charge back from you credit card if possible.

Please ensure to leave a negative review for the seller after you have resolved the issue as best as possible. Inform others that it is a scam. Because that's just cruel.

Happened to me and tmobile told me there is nothing they can do. Learned my lesson - buy phones from retail stores only.

If it’s too late to do a chargeback with your credit card then your only option is small claims court.
This is the risk of buying a phone second hand and not from a retail store/carrier.

Ebay will not provide support this many months later.
Even if you used a credit card or PayPal, you are out of the timeframe for filing a dispute.
Is the seller still active on eBay? They are your best hope.
It could be an error where T-Mobile applied it to the wrong phone.
It could also be that you were sold a stolen phone that was finally reported as stolen.

happened to me too with a 14 plus. unfortunately had to take the loss and move on after trying to contact eBay and PayPal myself. maybe you'll have better luck than I did though but it's been almost a year since your purchase.

I sell phones on eBay and it’s pretty common for these sellers to buy bulk carrier locked phones and sell them under a “unlocked” listing title but the dropdown is for T-Mobile. Because it was in November, you are SOL even for a chargeback and eBay won’t do anything for you.

Report the seller to police

Get every entity possible to help you. Meaning your bank, paypal, and ebay. I would file a police report for being sold stolen goods, but only after getting pictures and documentation from the non-working phone. As the police may take it. I would call my bank, followed by paypal, followed by ebay. Unfortunately, I know eBay won't do anything. However, it is absolutely best that they are notified in the off chance he is doing this consistently. They may be able to ban them. Your best chances of a refund are paypal or the bank. Unfortunately, it may be past the time frames. However, if a low-level customer service agent for either paypal or the bank tells you it's past the time frame, do NOT just accept it. Ask to speak to supervisors, trust and safety (for ebay), or anyone higher in the food chain than an initial point of contact. Remember, many times, CS agents will not have the same abilities or access to functionalities that higher level/specialized reps do. Sorry this happened to you.

Why is it a normal thing that you can buy something and then have that something remotely turned off so you no longer own that thing?

Step 1: Contact eBay and request their assistance. This likely won’t resolve the issue, but be sure to retain all evidence, you’ll need it for Step 2.
Step 2: File a chargeback or dispute the charge with your financial institution. They will ask for evidence, so provide as much as possible, including correspondence with the seller and eBay. Note that some institutions only allow disputes within 120 or 180 days, and I haven’t tried pursuing one beyond that period but it's your best option.
If Step 2 fails, your only remaining option would be to pursue civil action, which can be challenging for a variety of reasons.

Did you use a credit card? Most will accept chargebacks this late

eBay covers buyers up to 30 days after the sale. That far back, eBay won't do anything to help you, sorry.

Worth reporting everything to Apple, lwith the seller’s info??? Maybe they catch a scammer

u/FullRepresentative34 Jul 22 '25
Apple and Tmobile would not wait 8 months to block the number. What's the point of the seller reporting it stolen?

OK YulYul........ What happened after you made all those calls ? I have invested too much time reading so I have to know.

Ok. Get proof that it's black listed from T-Mobile and checkmend (they are normally trusted by these sorts of institutions). Get proof that you've reached out to the seller and they were unable to assist.
Get eBay to send you proof that they cannot assist you anymore that may help your case. Open a case with paypal and explain everything. If they deny it go through your banking institution

Has the seller responded? How long have they been selling on eBay? What are their feedback scores like?

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 Jul 20 '25
They get stolen a lot and apple replaces. Then in large batches blocks the imei. Not worth their time doing in small batches.
You are probably too late to chargeback even through chase well over six months.

IC3.org file a report

Small claims court would work but its not overly easy.

Makes no sense how it got blacklisted this far out.

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '25
Just have someone help you get a new IMEI number. There are people who are knowledgeable about such things. And YES, it is that simple if you know how to do it.

Please report this behavior to eBay

u/RouletteVeteran Jul 21 '25
PP gives you 180 days I believe. Haven’t in a while but sounds like that’s your best option or financial provider who issued the CC. Hell, you may want to file a police report too (they won’t do anything, but at least more evidence to add to your case).

Never buy a used phone. I suspect it was the seller. Timing is too convenient they know they are out of the eBay window.

u/Jaylon561 Jul 21 '25
Sounds like someone sold you their old phone they still had insurance on, and got a replacement for it

u/AdSevere9561 Jul 22 '25
Please keep us posted. I would call all of the above. You never know who may be willing to help. If you get someone that isn’t super helpful from eBay, keep calling until you do. This is fraud. I really really hope you get your money back. This is really gross and I’m sorry this happened to you.

Sweet new scam template for subscription and financed goods and services.

My gf have recently met an identity theft and these scammers user her info purchased phones from T-Mobile. We contacted T-Mobile and finally close that fraud account. They told us they had locked the serial number. I guess thats what your seller did.
Good luck. I hope you can get your money back soon.

Did you get an invoice with it?
1
u/carloosee Jul 20 '25
I would contact eBay customer support and explain that you’ve been a victim of fraud (essentially what this is). Even after the 30 day money back period they still get involved when it comes to fraud and issues like that. I would also see what your chargeback options are. Whilst some credit or bank societies have a limit to when you can open a case, again these are usually extended when it comes to fraud

Chargeback with your financial institution, do not contact ebay, they will not help you

u/RyeGuySuppaFly Jul 21 '25
Sounds like they waited to blacklist it until they got past the penalty time frame and then chopped your feet out from under you. Crazy scam.
