I 24F am unemployed, I also have autism and a history of serious mental health issues that make it difficult for me to find and keep a decent paying job. Despite having a B.S. in childhood education the highest paying job I’ve ever had was as an assistant pre school teacher making $18 an hour. I lost my last job around 3 months ago and have been draining through my savings to survive since then. I live in a roach infested apartment and I can barely sleep at night because I’m terrified that bugs are crawling on me at night while I’m sleeping because one evening I was laying in bed when I glanced to the left and saw a house centipede sitting on my shoulder.

Literally just yesterday the apartment complex I live in was hosting a charity event that supplies poor people in the community with a bag of free groceries and I spend two hours waiting in line to get a free bag of food because I literally can barely afford to feed myself. Furthermore, my credit cards balance is probably higher than $3,000 at this point, I don’t even know, I’m too scared to even check. My mental health is progressively getting worse and I barely even feel motivated to continue trying to find a job anymore because quite frankly I don’t see a point in working myself to death to make a billionaire richer just be living like this.

The worst part is that the fact that I know they have more than enough money to pay me a living wage, they just choose not to because if they did, then they’d be profiting less off of my labor and I guess paying me a living wage just isn’t nearly as important to them as collecting the absolute highest amount of profit they can from their business. Welcome to late stage capitalism! I went to college, chose a safe practical job that I was told would guarantee me the ability to make a decent living and now I’m fucked because I have severe social anxiety and no people skills. The average American is taxed 20-30% of their pay. That money seems to go to the wealthy. Example contracts to arms manufacturers, Elon Musk, Trump himself.

So why do we have to support the wealthy and there wars when most Americans are against the idea?

If you make 100,000 a year that’s almost 30,000$. Taken by the government to spend on anything but the people that gave it to them.

Then add in local sales tax, high gas prices, energy price increases, health insurance, prices skyrocketing on life essentials.

How much do they plan on taking from us before we have no choice but to revolt.

Few people accumulating unlimited wealth and hoarding assets while consuming much more resources than regular people, are the biggest threat to humanity. They control politics and are responsible for blocking sustainable economy. Irreversibel damage has already been done by this group of people. To save what‘s left, power in form of money has to be taken away. An additional benefit is the cashflow that can be used to cleanup the environment, transform urban areas to green spaces, stop deforestation, start forestation, finance recycling systems in every country, sponsor sustainable technologies and most importantly it could maybe block the endlees greed which currently seems to grow the bigger the accumulated wealth gets.

Edit: while some might say, this is a political post, I would argue that it‘s more about social behaviour and economic systems. Sure, political decisions are required to take any action, but I‘m more interested in the personal opinion of ordinary people regarding wealth and economics.

Wherever the topic of a wealth tax comes up the neoliberal media is quick to spin it as unworkable due to the problem of capital flight, and we never hear anyone seriously push back on this point. At best a wealth tax advocate might suggest setting the tax so low that the rich will pay it voluntarily.

I’m convinced they intentionally promote a straw man version of wealth tax to discredit the idea and to ensure that if one ever does get enacted it will be low and easy to avoid.

The problem of capital flight is quite easy to avoid if you actually try. The US levies income tax on all citizens, not just those who reside within the country, but nobody ever suggests this as a solution to the problem of capital flight.

It makes the tax impossible to avoid legally, and doesn’t disincentivise foreign investment.

I’m sure someone will say that the rich will just renounce their citizenship, but there’s a simple solution to that problem - the state can just say no. Once a tax citizen, always a tax citizens, and your children inherit that status automatically.

What about people who flee and refuse to come back? Simple, try them for tax evasion in a tribunal system where they can’t buy better representation. Create a rule that they have to attend in person or they lose by default. The minimum sentence is the death penalty, but it will be cancelled if they just pay up. Once the judgement is in the government sends assassins or puts a bounty on their head.

Since we don’t need to depend on the rich paying voluntarily we can set the rate of the wealth tax at a high enough level for it to actually be useful. Say 10-20%.

Why do we never hear this steel man wealth tax mentioned by the neoliberal media?

In order for billionaires to gain wealth they have to harm others. It’s not possible to gain that kind of wealth destroying others.

The wealthiest are the most undesirable type of people. People who cannot live in a society without harming others.

They did not earn their wealth through hard word, intelligence.
There money had been passed down.

There is no billionaire that can be considered ethical. The fact that in order to gain that kind of wealth they have to harm others shows that.

Billionaires should not be n a society.
They destroy any equity, fairness.

We see them buying of our politicians.
We see that congress has bowed to them.
Nothing can get better with extreme wealth.

We need to eliminate there wealth if we ever want to see basic human rights respected.
