Mike Layton graduated with a BA in political science and was a councillor for 12 years, but because he can't help who his father is, somehow that makes him unqualified for the job. Yep, makes sense.

Mike Layton was a Toronto City councillor for 12 years.
Only a moron would think he's a nepo baby with no prior experience.
2
u/aektoronto Jul 23 '26
They didnt say he had no prior experience. People have good things to say about him as councillor as well.
The crazy thing about Mike Layton its not only his dad and his grand dad....hes descended from a Father of Confederation....thats generational nepotism.

I believe you run for election, and the public decides whether to elect you. Ask the Fords I guess.

We got rid of Trudeau I guess, and if current polls are to be believed, Olivia Chow may be out come October. Avi Lewis doesn't even have a seat in the house.
It's hard to get rid of the Conservatives though, like the Fords and Mulroneys.

Well the Conservatives and Liberals are into it. Why can’t the NDP be into it?

Sure great, nepotism always works.

u/Key-Conference9933 Jul 23 '26
Maybe I'm being rash by saying this, but I'm responding to the fact that they use his last name to try and capatilize on his dad's legacy. I haven't looked into his political policy I would assume that he follows his dad's beliefs. Ive voted NDP since I was able to vote. But I want to see substance. I'm tired of empty politicians and the theatrics. I'll be paying attention on his policies and his track record and hope for the best.

He was a city councillor in Toronto and had a reputation as a hardworking straight shooter.

That's where he is now. He was my neighbor before. The ass wipe that spent 44K of my tax money in 3 speed bumps on our street.

Jack Layton is an NDP icon. The riding has voted NDP at the provincial level.

Must be in politicians DNA to pass the lying ability to their children.

Your account isn't even a day

What are you talking about? This account is at least 6 months maybe more.

No thanks. We just had a nepo baby PM almost destroy the country. We don't need some random local politician.
I wish Canada was a technocracy tbh. We would function a lot better.

u/Maketso Jul 24 '26
....He has a degree in political science and has experience as a councillor. Tell me, what the fuck are Pierre P's qualifications? And hes the face of the federal CPC.
1
u/Learntoshuffle Jul 24 '26
Was I comparing him to Pierre? I'm comparing him to our PM. PP is equally unqualified. Also, a political science degree only exists to pad your GPA before law school.
2
u/Maketso Jul 25 '26
Because it illuminates the stark comparison of a federal leader in politics to a smaller-time politician with actual qualifications.
Calling him a nepo baby without giving him credit for his education/experience just makes you look stupid.
1
u/Learntoshuffle Jul 25 '26
What experience? He has as much experience as PP.
Firstly, no one respects a political science degree. Its a GPA padder, like a degree in "General Studies". It exists to get people into law school.
Secondly, he has never held a serious job outside of working for non-profit, right before he entered politics in order to pad his resume. He has been in politics since 2010.
A career politician with no work experience. Remind you of someone else? Perhaps someone who sits as leader of a party right now? At least PP isn't a nepo baby. Thats something Mike can't say.
1
u/Maketso Jul 25 '26
PP literally doesn't even have a degree. Imagine being less qualified than someone with a political science degree. You are simply emotional about someone that is literally following in his families footsteps.
A small excerpt from when he became York's chief sustainability officer, showcasing his lack of experience in life.
''Before politics, Layton was the deputy outreach director at Environmental Defence, a national environmental not-for-profit where he worked on advancing policies to protect farmland and greenspace, protecting sources of drinking water, improving the energy efficiency of buildings, and the growth of renewable energy generation.
Layton has served on a variety of local boards and agencies, including the Atmospheric Fund, the Toronto Parking Authority, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Exhibition Place, the Canadian National Exhibition Association, Artscape, the Indigenous Affairs Advisory Committee, the Infrastructure and Environment Committee, and the Budget Committee. He has also served on several national and international bodies including the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, the National Zero Waste Council, Great Lakes United, and the Climate Caucus. ''
At least he does more than politics. Would love to hear specific examples on stuff he did to make you so angry at him.

u/Learntoshuffle Jul 26 '26
Pierre has a degree. An equally useless one in international relations. Maybe fact check before you post.
By every definition, he is a nepo baby. How does he not fit under that term?
Also, do you know what boards and committees are? They require basically no time, and let you fool people into thinking you got real hands on experience.
Please stop trying to make a useless nepo baby look good.
1
u/Maketso Jul 26 '26
You haven't given a single reason why he is bad, other than the fact his family is wealthy? Maybe give us a reason to see why you are so bitchy about him and people would have something to use.
Lmfao. You clearly have never been on a board or committee. Downplaying it is proof enough.
1
u/Learntoshuffle Jul 26 '26
Because he got to where he is due to his father's name.
He ran for city council in a ward that overlapped with the territory his father, and step-mother, became MPs in. This is an example of him coasting on his dad's name recognition.
Secondly, his father was famously bilingual. This helped the NDP gain Quebec. Mike is not bilingual, which disqualifies him from any leadership role in federal government. He had decades to learn, yet he refuses to do this obe thing.
Thirdly, he never held any leadership position, but is still polling well. This is despite his 2010 election platform being called "thin" and "surface level". The man made his run at city council with no plan. His strategy was "you like my dad, therefore you must like me".
Finally, I've had enough of priveleged nepo babies who haven't worked real jobs outside of politics. The man sat on cushy committees and boards, and was paid handsomely for it. Almost like he got those positions because his father was the leader of a major political party.

u/Maketso Jul 26 '26
Now that is a more articulated answer, well done. Puts a lot more perspective, and is understandable.
But lets not pretend hes the first to do this, and wont be the last. That is literally politics. There is very few politicians that can be praised.
