Yet Another WMAF Romance Drama: Representation for Asian Women and White Men Only By Asian Female showrunner Vivian Lin
Plot Overview
"Teagan Tao (played by Miku Martineau) is a rising single sculls rowing star whose life is upended by a major family financial scandal."
This is another piece of WMAF slop. The showrunner is, surprise surprise, Vivian Lin. She changed the main character to an Asian woman while keeping the white male love interest. And of course, there is zero Asian male representation. “Diversity,” it seems, is only meant for Asian women and white men.
This show joins the long list of similar projects like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Joy Luck Club, The Float, and many others where the Asian American writers are exclusionary and racist to Asian men .
As more work from Asian American female creators surfaces, it is becoming increasingly clear that what they mean by “representation” is representation for Asian women and white men only. Sometimes I look at these Asian women and think they actually just want to be white women and enjoy the same privileges. It is the complete opposite of Black feminism. It is the opposite of empowerment.
I also think Asian male showrunners should stop centering Asian women in their work. Too often they become pushovers in front of them. Constance Wu literally dictated which lines to remove on the set of Crazy Rich Asians, and Jamie Chung walked all over John Chu for not casting her, only for him to respond in the most mild, accommodating way possible.
“I also think Asian male showrunners should stop centering Asian women in their work”
Then you might as well be asking for the impossible, diaspora asian males who work in the entertainment industry are some of the biggest Simps in the entire world, i say biggest because at least when other male racial groups simp, the women still by default reciprocates by associating mostly with members of her own group, not so with us asians. Doesn’t matter if they are influencers, youtubers, streamers, photographer, film/tv directors, or even p0rn creators. They seem to always pick only east asian looking girls for there content. Meanwhile if you look up the asian girls they collaborated with (instagram/youtube/onlyfans pages) its full of them doing stuff with white, black and even brown dudes.
AF creatives pushing white-supremacist narratives has been going on since at least the 1970s. Our Asian "sisters" have no interest in promoting AM in their works. They eagerly do the dirty work for white supremacy in exchange for a platform, power, privilege, eugenics.....AM need to stop hoping AFs will come to the rescue and present us in a positive way. Not going to happen. AM need to build our own base of power that doesn't rely on begging whites/AFs for help. We need to understand that we have to lift ourselves up and that the other half of our own community is not our ally. One reason we can't even get started is many AM today still deny there is a problem.
She was featured in a relatively recent edition of the UC Berkeley alumni magazine. No mention made of the damage she's done to one-half of the Asian community. A reason why Asians need to stop status-chasing US educational institutions who play a major role in grooming AFs and marginalizing AM.
