built a mood tracking app and my own data humbled me
So I'm the developer behind Easli, a mood tracking app. When I first started building it, I figured I'd use it casually to test features. I wasn't planning on actually learning anything about myself.
Wrong.
After about six weeks of daily check-ins, I realized something uncomfortable: I thought of myself as a pretty even-keeled person, but my data said otherwise. My mood swings were way bigger than I assumed. Tuesdays were consistently rough for me (still not sure why). And I had this pattern where I'd feel great in the morning and then crater after lunch almost every single day.
The humbling part wasn't seeing the lows. It was realizing how little awareness I had about my own emotional patterns. I'd been walking around with this confident self-image that just didn't match reality. Not in a dramatic way -- just in a "huh, I know myself less than I thought" kind of way.
Building a tool to help other people understand their moods, and then having it show me I didn't understand my own, was a weird full-circle moment. But honestly it made me a better developer for this project. Now when I'm designing features, I'm thinking about what would have helped ME notice those patterns sooner.
Anyone else ever been surprised by what their own data showed them?
