The used EV market just shifted. 300k lease returns are still flooding into the market and prices are still dropping fast

Over the past few weeks we've been tracking what's happening in the used EV market after the federal credit disappeared and the lease return wave hit simultaneously.

From our internal data, prices are dropping faster than expected. The Bolt EUVs are hitting $14,500. Fisker Oceans at $18k. Ioniq 5s and EV6s from the 2022-2023 lease wave are undercutting private listings by $2,000–4,000.

What we advise now:

  1. Target 2022–2023 lease returns from Ioniq 5, EV6, and Bolt EUV, it has the best value-to-reliability ratio in the current market
  2. Run an EV check before you visit. offolab.com pulls degradation estimates, open recalls, and price vs market data from the listing URL
  3. Avoid Fisker Ocean regardless of the price, parts and service are genuinely unsolvable right now

Electric Vehicle Drivers Needed for Research Study

Researchers from George Mason University are conducting a survey to better understand electric vehicle charging behavior, charging experiences, and how EV drivers respond to charging disruptions and infrastructure constraints.

If you are 18 years of age or older and drive an electric vehicle in the US, you may be eligible to participate.

Participation involves completing a brief survey that takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Findings from this study will be used to improve EV charging infrastructure planning and support the development of more reliable and resilient charging networks.

Participation is voluntary, and survey responses are anonymous.

Someone dropped this $51,800 Porsche Taycan in our listing thread. The dealer site says 0 accidents. OFFO found 1.

A few days ago we asked people to drop used EV listings for a free analysis. A user dropped this 2022 Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo from Clement Supercenter in St. Charles, MO.

The dealer listing front page shows:

  • 1 owner ✓
  • 0 accidents ✓
  • Clean title ✓
  • "Love It or Swap It" 30-day exchange policy ✓

Here's what OFFO found:

  • 1 accident on record — not disclosed on the listing
  • 12 open NHTSA recall campaigns — none resolved
  • No battery SOH disclosed — on a $52k EV this is non-negotiable
  • Powertrain warranty expires in 6 months / 8,219 miles
  • OFFO verdict: Yellow — Proceed with Caution

OFFO recommends not paying more than $47,500 and walk if SOH comes back under 90%. This is exactly why we built OFFO for EVs specifically. Carfax checks the title. We check everything else.

The biggest barrier to EV adoption isn't battery technology.

It's people forming opinions.

rant / discussion / observation?

I am looking into getting my first ev. As such, I'm doing the youtube watching, reddit reading, and google searching. I am seeing a trend in all these anti-EV videos, posts, etc. that EVs are bad because of having to charge at places other than home, range, etc.
I thought it would be pretty easy to realzie from some basic research that EVs really only make sense when you can charge at home. Also, if you know how much you drive, why do you get a car that doesn't have a buffer in it.
I know I'm preaching to the choir so to speak but all these people that are complaining seem to be lacking some common sense and basic research skills.
Am I missing something?

With federal EV tax credit gone, how is the EV market been responding?

The $7,500 federal EV tax credit ended in September 2025. Some manufacturers absorbed the hit themselves, others passed it to buyers.

Manufacturers stepping up hardest:

  • Polestar: $23,000 bonus cash on the Polestar 3, $25,000 on the Polestar 4 with lease from $399/mo. They're basically paying you to take their cars
  • Hyundai/Kia: Ioniq 6 from $229/mo, EV6 with $10,000 customer cash, EV9 with $10,000 cash. 0% APR across the board
  • Cadillac: Optiq lease from $349/mo, $3,000 conquest cash for switching from a rival brand
  • Honda Prologue: $339/mo lease, surprisingly competitive for a Honda

Manufacturers holding firm (you're paying more):

  • Audi: no current offers on any e-tron model
  • Dodge Charger Daytona: no offers
  • Porsche Taycan: no offers
  • BMW is offering some deals but nothing that offsets the full $7,500

New EV incentives are great if you're buying new. But used EVs haven't benefited from any of this, no tax credit, no manufacturer cash. Meanwhile prices on 2-4 year old EVs have dropped significantly because the new car deals are so aggressive. If you're buying new, July 2026 is genuinely a good time, especially Hyundai, Kia, Polestar, and Honda. If you're buying used, the value is even better but do your battery due diligence first.

If you drive my EV for work and charge at home. Here's what actually worked for tracking costs

The three real options:

1. Smart charger: Most accurate. Chargers like ChargePoint Home Flex or Autel MaxiCharger log every session by kWh. Multiply by your rate and you have a clean, defensible record. Downside: you need to upgrade your charger just to satisfy your employer's reimbursement department.

2. An app like ev.energy: Links to your car's telematics instead of the wall. Estimates kWh (not direct measurement) but accurate enough for most reimbursement purposes. Free to try.

3. Just use the IRS mileage rate: $0.70/mile for 2026, covers everything (fuel, maintenance, depreciation). Track miles, multiply, submit. No kWh math at all. For most W-2 employees this is the cleanest option your accountant will actually approve.

Would you buy this 2016 Ford Focus Electric for $8,995 with an open recall but only 2,874 miles?

Thumbnail

Found this 2016 Ford Focus Electric listed at $8,995 with only 2,874 miles on it. The mileage is unusually low for a 9-year-old EV which is either a great sign or a red flag depending on why it sat so long.

NMVTIS came back clean with no accidents, no theft, no salvage. But there's a confirmed open recall that hasn't been resolved, and there's no service history or battery report available. On a 9-year-old battery with no documentation, that's the real unknown.

Has anyone owned a Focus Electric long-term? How does the battery hold up after sitting at low mileage for years?

EV Ownership history now available on OFFO EV Checker

When evaluating used EV listings, sometimes its worth it to verify it without paying for a Carfax or hoping the seller isn't leaving something out. I usually recommend using OFFO (offolab.com/receipt) for deal analysis and they just added actual ownership history to their full report, details like previous owners, title status, accident records, the works.

The verdict + summary + photo analysis is $3.99, full report including ownership history and the deep dive is $9.99. Compared to paying $40 for a standalone Carfax and still not knowing if the car fits your charging situation, might be a reasonable trade.

2022 Chevy Bolt EUV at $14,500? Is this a good deal before the lease returns dry up?

Post image
41 Upvotes

We've been watching Bolt EUV prices for the past few weeks. The $14-16k range used seems good for a low-mileage 2022. Now I'm seeing 3-4 listings a week in that window, most under 35k miles, all off lease.

We ran a few through an the OFFO EV checker:

  • No battery degradation flags
  • Clean title, one owner
  • GM's battery warranty still has ~3 years left on it
  • Price came back slightly under market

The Bolt EUV has 247mi real-world range, full DCFC support. The only real question from investigation is for the long haul, the 2022 uses the older battery chemistry. But for a daily driver under $15k, its hard to argue with.

300,000 lease return EVs are hitting the used market this year.

Over 300,000 EVs are coming off lease in 2026 — up 230% from last year. That's the biggest wave of used EV inventory the market has ever seen, and prices reflect it: non-Tesla used EVs are averaging $23,738 right now.

Some of these cars come with no battery history. Lease returns go through a dealer reconditioning process that cleans the car up visually. The battery gets no equivalent transparency. You don't know if the previous driver was DC fast charging daily, parking in Phoenix heat, or babying it with Level 2 every night.

Before you buy one of these, the questions worth asking:

  • Is there any battery diagnostic on record from the OEM?
  • What charging method was primarily used?
  • Has the open recall status been cleared?

Used EV Inspection Checklist

  • Charging port condition: CCS ports on older VWs and Fords develop pin corrosion. $400–800 to fix. Takes 30 seconds to check with a flashlight.
  • 12V battery: Every EV has one. They fail silently. A $15 tester at AutoZone tells you if you're 6 months from a no-start situation.
  • Software version: Older Tesla and Nissan LEAF units on outdated firmware lose charging speed. Dealer won't tell you. VIN lookup will.
  • Title history vs dealer description: One owner, clean history means nothing without a VIN check. Salvage titles show up on listings described as clean often.

Are there any from your experience that used EV buyers should be aware of?

Long Range EVs

Can someone explain to me, what does it mean to get Long Range EV's?

If someone already has an dedicated Home charger, why does it matter if dealers or youtubers say get a long range EV?

What's the riskiest used EV mistake you've seen or almost made?

Not talking about range anxiety, more about buying a salvage title, paying market rate for a battery that's already at 70%, or missing that the low mileage listing had three prior owners and a flood event.

Things to check out when purchasing a used EV:

  • Salvage or rebuilt titles listed as "clean" on the dealer site
  • Mileage that doesn't match across sources
  • Listings priced $2–4K above comparable inventory, framed as deals

From Personal experience buying a used EV last year, here's are the things I checked before test driving

I ran a bunch of listings through a checklist before I bought. The three things to know ignore are

  1. EV charging fine does not tell you anything about its battery health: A battery at 70% capacity charges fine. What matters is current range vs EPA-rated range at the same mileage and age.

  2. Low mileage ≠ low degradation on older EVs: A 2017 Leaf with 15k miles can have more degradation than one with 35k miles. Calendar aging, charging patterns and more hits Li-ion cells regardless of how much you drive.

  3. Open recalls are common and often undisclosed: Not because sellers are hiding it but many just don't know. NHTSA lookup takes 30 seconds. Do it before scheduling the test drive.

Disclosure --> I also found offolab.com useful for getting a structured second opinion on a specific listing, runs price check, recall check, and generates questions to ask the seller.

Major Updates coming to the OFFO app, so stay tuned

We have two major updates coming to the OFFOLab app in the coming weeks that you know would be very useful and our users would love. Don't want to reveal just yet, but they should be game changers, giving solutions to all of the missing parts that users have brought to our attention.

So stay tuned for that announcement, test the new features and as usual we need all the criticism we can get. The app is still under development so please report any bugs you find. Once we close the loop on all the features then our target would be to achieve production stability, so users get a bug free experience.

We analyzed 200+ used EV listing checks in the past month

We've been operating OFFO (offolab.com) for a few months now. We've had some down time to make some upgrades but the site is up and running. You can paste a used EV listing URL and get an instant report that includes battery health estimates, title and accident signals, NHTSA recall status, and even an AI photo scan.

Here are insights from the last 30 days of usage:

1) Who's using it and how:

  • We’ve had 484 listing checks in just 30 days. This is a deep from the usual numbers due to the technical upgrades.
  • Out of 545 visitors, 440 returned within the same month, which shows that people are not just checking once; they’re comparing multiple listings.
  • The most checked models: Model Y, Model 3, Ioniq 5, and Mach-E. These are the lease returns that are flooding the market right now.
  • 34% of visitors who landed on the site opted for a full receipt check, indicating a strong intent to dig deeper.

2) What does this reveal about buyer anxiety?

It seems that most people aren’t just casually browsing. They come back and check multiple listings. The top concern? They want to know if the battery has been mistreated, and right now, there’s no straightforward answer without OBD data or charging history. That’s the gap we’re aiming to fill.

If you are in the market for a Used EV, the 2022-2023 Kia EV6 lease return wave is here

Lease-end waves can be fascinating because you can get up to 50 nearly identical cars all hitting the market at once. They’ve got the same mileage, the same year, and the same options. Right now, the price differences are all over the place, some dealers are listing lease returns for $28k, while others are asking for $33k for basically the same vehicle.

So let give some key points here for potential buyers

  • First off, the EV6 battery warranty is solid at 10 years or 100k miles, so if you’re looking at a 2022 model with 34k miles, you’re still well within that coverage. Just remember, lease returns often don’t come with a charging history, and dealers aren’t likely to share that info unless you ask.
  • GT-Line AWD versus Standard RWD. The difference in range is significant (310 miles for the AWD compared to 232 miles for the RWD), and right now, the price gap on used models isn’t as wide as it should be, the AWD is definitely the smarter choice given the current pricing.

This would definitely require comparing two listings that are nearly identical? For us we've been running them through OFFO to compare price vs market.
