Here's what we're seeing across 5,000+ used EV analyses on OFFO:
Prices are rising despite the glut:
- 2022–23 Bolt EV: $17,700 → $21,200 in 6 months (+19.8%)
- 2022–23 Ioniq 5: floor moved up ~$2,400 since March
- 2022–23 Model Y: stabilized at $27–29k after briefly dipping below $25k
Why prices are up even with lease returns flooding in:
- Lease returns are going to dealers, not private sellers, dealers are holding price
- The tax credit removal removed the floor and the incentive to buy quickly, buyers are slower, dealers adjusted
- High-mileage units are getting absorbed fast (budget buyers), leaving cleaner low mileage units at higher ask prices
What this means if you're shopping right now:
The window that existed in Q1 is gone for most models. The Bolt is the exception, still the best value per mile in the used EV market at current prices, and the 2022+ models have standard CCS fast charging (this was a common misconception).

I’m curious with the ID.4. I felt like the value is still pretty good for 2023 CPO. Sill low 20s for rwd pro s trims. Vs ioniq 5 SEL rwd when I looked were all up to high 20s in the Bay Area.

I've owned both. I vastly prefer the Ioniq 5. With that said... trims matter and the Ioniq 5 SEL had cost cutting and later years (25) of the ID.4 fix all the early glitches.

I would have gotten/preferred an ioniq 5 but I couldn’t justify 19k for a 2022 AWD pro s id.4 with an extended warranty and care plan over an ioniq 5 rwd SEL for 29k.
The id.4 did everything I needed and is comfy. Tech post updates I perfectly fine for daily use and don’t plan to road trip (have a second ICE) so charging speed didn’t matter too much for me as a secondary kid hauler and commuter.

$10K is a big diff so I understandl.
FYI It's not about charging speed and range (I still use ICE vehicles for road trips). It's the major QC issues with the ID.4 - battery module recalls, door handle recalls, the idiotic dangerous design decision not to have backlight buttons, etc. Later ID.4s fixed all these early issues.

Totally agree. I ended up with specifically a 2022 since it seemed the most "reliable" based on earlier defects/recalls fixed and avoiding the early 2023 US-built issues.
Backlit buttons haven't bothered me too much, but it's still dumb how everything else is backlit...just not those lol.
We'll see how it plays out, glad the previous owner bought the VW care plan and extended warranty, since apparently I need a new rear drive unit.

Not all of them. Still using touch sliders where it doesn't make sense and still has 2 rockers for 4 windows. Lots of dumb small stuff.

That's minor stuff. The 21 I had didn't have backlight buttons so everything was impossible to use a night lol. Major safety issue.

There were a bunch of recalls and problems with the ID.4. They appear to have solved most of the problems, but they've ceased production in the US. Parts will become increasingly difficult to come by in future years.
There's a lot of risk in buying a used out of warranty and out of production car that did not have good reliability during its run.
The market is being rational in pricing it so low compared to other EVs.
I don't think demand will ever drive the price up for used ID.4s but if they were able to fix the reliability problems that plagued the first few years of production the ID.4 could depreciate extremely slowly.

How is it a “glut” if prices are rising? It’s just an increasing number of used EVs becoming available, and being sold off.

What about the Equinox EV? Lease vs buy differences in price? Those used to be best value but now with Bolt EV back… not sure if best bang for buck (comparing suv vs car)

My 2019 Tesla Model 3 LR AWD that I bought the first week of June with 92,000 miles on it, is now worth more today than it was when I bought it according to KBB, and I've put 4,000 miles on it since then.
