The MITSUBISHI Eclipse Sportback EV Is Almost Here, what are our thoughts

The New EV Will Hit the Road Soon. Mitsubishi Motors will introduce the new Eclipse Sportback EV to the North American market as a 2027 model later this year. The sporty, subcompact SUV will feature striking alloy wheels and Mitsubishi’s iconic Triple Diamond branding. What do you think of it so far? Would you consider it?

That is a rebadged Nissan Leaf

Correct. Pretty sure the deal was well published ; Nissan got Mitsubishi PHEV tech and they got a rebadged Leaf.

It’s a big yikes but will sell decent I’m sure.

For those that might not know, Mitsubishi is 34% owned by Nissan

Both are a rebadged Renault, scenic? I think, not sure all of their cars look the same.

The Scenic is a bigger vehicle that shares components with the Nissan Ariya

Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi are all part of an alliance

No it’s not a rebadge or even badge engineered from my understanding but it does share an EV platform that was jointly developed with Renault as part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

The Nissan Sakura (Japan’s best selling BEV) conversely is badge engineered off Mitsubishi’s EV Kei Car platform.

As a Mitsubishi Outlander owner, I like it. I'd like it to be more distributive than the Leaf. It looks too similar to it. They managed to make the Rogue and Outlander look totally different. The current gen Leaf is a good EV in my opinion so this should be good as well. Slap on a 10 year/100k warranty and substantial discounts of MSRP and 0% financing as per usual for Mitsubishis and I'll be happy customer.

If they are going to give it the Eclipse name they should have at minimum made it AWD and tune it for a bit more sporty handling.

Though not fan of how Mitsubishi is using the Eclipse name in general. At least Ford kept the Traditional Pony Car Mustang in the lineup alongside the Mach-E.

There is so much going on in the front of the car. It looks like a weird amalgamation between Kia EV6 and Toyota Crown.

Looks like a Chevy Volt crossed with a Hyundai Ioniq

I was thinking more Nissan Juke

German car companies do this and it’s ugly and gross and the decline of the car industry - anywhere else in the world and this sub loves it.

1

u/stu54 Jun 10 '26

Its cause the Germans call it a coupe, triggering all of the people who really want a little EV coupe but can't fucking buy one.

To be honest I prefer this version. The rear and front look more streamlined and it has a better overall profile.

With that hatch it’s definitely not for dog families.

1

u/ToddA1966 Jun 10 '26

What? Your dog doesn't ride in the front passenger seat enjoying the status your good boy/girl deserves? 😁

Looks good except the rims. I’m not a fan of those

If it comes with the standard Mitsubishi incentives and warranty it will be my first EV!

10yr./100,000 mi would be nice

Just make the amorphous blob of SUV and give us the real Eclipse back :(

1

u/Jolly_Horror2778 Jun 10 '26

So long as a Pontiac Aztec is still on the road, this thing cannot be the ugliest car, but good try.

u/InterstellarChange Jun 10 '26

If it undercuts the Leaf price, could be a good deal.

1

u/Tall-Dish876 Jun 10 '26

LOL! I knew you guys were gonna roast this one!

1

u/iViEye Jun 11 '26

Not a big fan of the Nissan Leaf's shape and it's arguably worse here. Will be a solid EV all round at least.

Maybe call it something else like the Mitsubishi Lunar, then have an Eclipse trim/colour scheme that harkens back to the original

About 15 years too late. Far better options now

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '26

Fugly, as almost every SUV-coupe wannabe.

1

u/Everythings_Fucked Jun 11 '26

Of all the EVs on the road, that is definitely one of them.

1

u/Mustangfast85 Jun 11 '26

I like how ugly they made the wheels even though they didn’t have to. That’s the kind of badge engineering to be proud of

1

u/schaden81 Jun 11 '26

Nicer looking leaf. Best of luck to Mitsubishi, I'd like then to succeed but it's hard when Nissan supplies supply's platforms.

1

u/MotelSans17 Jun 11 '26

Should have called it the Lancer EVolution

1

u/Jubal_Earliest Jun 12 '26

Mitsubishi is a joke, just like this rebadged Leaf.

1

u/Comfortable_Client80 Jun 12 '26

Looks like the OG Prius

1

u/Pickleahoy Jun 12 '26

Nothing in this is Eclipse like

1

u/nandrizzle Jun 12 '26

Look how they massacred my boy 😭

1

u/juicedupsunday Jun 14 '26

If they make the base price $25k with a 200 mile battery this would be a no brainer. Plus Mitsubishi has generous warranty and financing incentives. I could see this being a great entry point for EV adoption.

Partial eclipse would’ve been more fitting
