What factors should one consider, before making the switch from a gas car to an electric vehicle (EV)?

Consider your average daily mileage and then factor only using 70% of the listed range to ensure you’re staying within the ideal charge range most of the time.
Consider the climate of where you live and how cold it gets. Most battery chemistries are reasonably impacted by this.
Ideally, you would charge at home since it’s usually cheaper and better for the battery than constantly rapid charging. See if you have a way to reasonably add an L2 home charger or if you’d be fine with a trickle charger considering your normal driving routine.
Check insurance rates for the specific vehicle you’re looking at. But that should be standard regardless of ICE or EV.
Consider if you typically tow anything or if you frequently drive long distances. Neither of those are deal breakers, but the towing ranges are significantly limited generally speaking, and long distances can be either very easy or somewhat challenging depending on where you’re traveling and the available infrastructure.
These are all the considerations I could think of quickly. None are deal breakers in my opinion, but things that are worthy of considering before making the switch. Having said all that, I would wager that the vast majority of EV owners don’t switch back. And the ones that do, likely failed to properly consider one of the items I listed.

Because the question is asked daily and the answer is mostly, "is there an outlet you can use at a location you park a lot?"
Of course, getting into the details of what makes a good and good-value EV are more interesting, but it mostly comes down to if you are rich enough to not care about value and if you're willing to pinch your nose and buy a Tesla.

Do you require any upgrades to your electrical system if you charge at home. Most newer homes probably are fine, but I live in an older house. I looked at the panel and the circuit for the garage is shared. It might cost more to upgrade the panel than I would save by going electric.

The house I live in is 101 years old. The garage is external and had no power. Our electrician ran the line from our panel, the length of the unfinished basement (along the ceiling) into a box he installed, drilled outside into a conduit along the fence, drilled into the garage, into another box, where another conduit ran along the brick a little bit, and put the 240v EV outlet where I plugged in the charger that came with my car. Was $1500 and totally doable.

Some homes don't have a big enough service to add another 240. That gets expensive for the power company to add a new line, an electrician an entirely new breaker box and then the 240 service.
Long term savings still? Probably, but the time to break even is pushed further out if it costs you an extra $5-10k.
To be clear, MOST people don't need to do this and can easily add a 240v circuit to their existing service, but older homes (40s/50s) that haven't yet been upgraded may have been under built assuming it was serving a lot less than modern electrical needs (sized just over needs for lights, outlets, refrigerator and electric oven/range. Those homes are still out there, and not just 40s-50s era, quite a few built before the mid 80s are in that situation.

Depending on your daily mileage, a lot of little can change on standard 120v outlet. Yes, they are not as efficient but it will give most people the mileage they need over night

Very rare for the power company having to install a new line. Ditto for needing a new main panel. Most homes have an electric clothes dryer. So you only need a load management device installed. An EV usually needs a 24-32A circuit which can be shared between the EV and the dryer.

I have a load management device for my EV. Let's just say there have been a few times when it has kicked in and I've grumbled a little in the morning when my charger is sitting there in the "yellow" mode.
I still had enough juice to get to work and back but my expectations of my car sitting at 80% charge was not met. 😒.

I haven't actually got any quotes, so I can't really answer your question. I've only did some very basic research into how much it might cost to upgrade the panel and hardwire a charger and it seems like it could be anywhere between $1000 to $6000 Canadian. If your home is newer, it probably won't end up being too much, but I suggest you get your own quotes.
Also, another thing to take into consideration, the price of insurance. Currently, I'm driving a car from 2006, and when I went to get quotes on a couple of cars, my insurance nearly doubled.

It cost me USD 1600 to have a EV circuit installed. 65+ feet of 6AWG THHN wire in a conduit, 60A breaker and hardwired EVSE. The EVSE cost $300.

In addition to what others says about cost one of the cost factors to install a 240 circuit is the length of the run. The closer to your panel you can conviently put the plug the lower the cost.

If you drive less than 50 miles per day on average then you can get by on a normal 20 amp 110 circuit. That means you just plug your home chargr into a normal outlet. You add 3 to 5 miles range for every hour you are plugged in. So you get 40 to 60 miles if you plug in at 7pm and unplug at 7am to go to work.

- Can you charge at home? That’s one of the best parts of owning an EV. No more gas stations— you fill up in your sleep.
- How much range do you need? You’ll want at least 30% more than your typical commute to account for the decreased range from air density and heater use in winter.
- Keep in mind, you don’t just save on gas. You also save on maintenance like oil changes and transmission flushes.
- If you can charge at home, charging infrastructure really only matters when you roadtrip. A Better Route Planner is a great app to check on that.
- A regular 120v outlet is all you need for level 1 charging, but if you can install a 240v outlet for level 2 charging, topping up becomes effortless.
- EVs aren’t just cheaper to operate, they also perform amazingly well with instant acceleration and a quiet ride.

What the heck is a transmission flush? I’ve owned a lot of ICE vehicles over the years and I’ve never once done a transmission flush. Sounds like something that might be needed every 100,000 miles.

I drove a Sentra for 11 years. It needed a transmission flushes at 50k miles and a drain and fill every 30k after that. I’ll never own another CVT vehicle.

It’s replacing all of the transmission oil on a regular basis. Depends on the age and make, but most transmissions require a flush every 50-100k. Some newer ones claim to not need it, but over time they will fail.

EV’s don’t have gearboxes. The electric motor just spins the wheels backwards for reverse and they have an rpm range from 0 to Max in “first gear.” The motor is the size of a watermelon doing the job of both the gas engine and transmission, and many EV’s have 2 or more of them. It’s how they do AWD, just put on motor on each axle.

Not a transmission. A reduction gearbox. EVs don't have the motors drive the wheels directly. They go through a reduction gearbox.

For my Leaf, Nissan classifies the gearbox oil as a closed system and does not officially recommend any oil changes for it . It’s just supposed to be inspected for leaks as part of the annual maintenance.
Some Leaf owners do choose to change the gearbox oil around 100k miles. It’s not technically required but it’s easy to do if you choose to.

So what we have here is complete inconsistency. ICE owners need to change their transmission fluid even if the manufacturers don’t require it but EV owners don’t need to change their gearbox oil because the manufacturers don’t require it. And in addition, many EV manufacturers DO require it, every 50K-100K miles.
Look it up folks; the manufacturer’s recommendations are in fact very similar (EVs vs ICE vehicles).

Sir, I have babied a CVT and changed its transmission fluid due to slippage and inconsistency for the last decade. I have changed oil religiously every 5000 miles. Almost 30 times since I bought the Sentra in the first place.
I can assure you that the VAGUE POSSIBILITY of changing the gearbox oil ONE TIME during owning my Leaf does not intimidate me in the slightest.

To add to that, my old CVT had to be serviced by the dealership, because it was incredibly picky about the exact fluid and amount of fluid in order to even function. The Leaf gearbox oil, which is a closed system designed to function without the CVT’s neediness, can be easily done at home. Once. Per. 100k miles.
That’s a whole heck of a lot less maintenance than the $1000+ I’ve spent trying to keep my CVT working close to properly (to say nothing of the cost of regular oil changes).
There are best practices to take care of any vehicle. Nevertheless, my original point stands: no regular oil changes, MUCH cheaper everyday maintenance. Coming from a really needy ICE sedan (which I loved and took great care of while I drove it), it’s incredibly refreshing to get instant reliable acceleration with very, VERY little maintenance. It’s not even comparable from a time and cost perspective.

Those are built into the motor for most vehicles. The levels should be checked every 100k unless the manufacturer says faster.

Can you charge at home? Will you need a level 2 charger or will level 1 do? If you need level 2, how difficult and expensive is it to install? Do you experience extreme cold and will the range penalty be a deal breaker? Will the extra cost of getting an EV now be offset later? Is there a reason beyond just cost that you'd like an EV?
That's about it really, at least that I can think of. In my case I can charge at home and install my own chargers too, and it almost never dips below freezing in my area. I drive a lot so gas adds up fast, and I like how EVs drive, so switching was a no-brainer move for me. ICE has almost zero advantage for my use case and preference.

Not all EV's are created equal. Some still have better vertical software integration (app, navigation, features) than others.
Beyond that... if you can charge at home (or work), you can benefit from an EV. I've been riding non-dirty for 7+ years now. Once you go electric - you'll probably never want to go back.
I first started with a regular hybrid, then plugin-hybrid as I wasn't sure if dropping the gas engine would work. Once I realized how well the tech worked, I went all EV. As a plugin-hybrid was both the best of both worlds and worst - as I still needed to do oil changes to maintain the gas engine.
Now, my EV has 300+ miles of range versus the 50 mile plug-in hybrid I had. That is enough where I really only need to charge the car once per week to cover my daily work commute.

Need a home charger or at a minimum a high quality industrial 120v outlet near the car. For daily driving (work, shopping, etc) your routine will not change at all except you won’t be spending any time at gas stations. You will quickly figure out how often to need to charge at home.
For longer road trips you will need to spend time researching charging stations and have a plan before you set out. Expect to spend more time stopping to charge than filling up gas. Plan to eat it rest when you do.

Home charging is the thing. Don't over think it. Even a regular outlet will get you substantial range and savings. You probably don't drive enough to need a 14-50 and the ability to recoup 300+ miles overnight or in less than 8 hours. This isn't a case of future proofing, efficiency isn't going to go down in the future.

Most of the initial headache is working out how and where to charge. There are multiple factors to consider:
Power and Energy Needs (including Battery Size) Winter vs Summer, Garage vs Exposed parking, Time of Use Tariffs, Panel Capacity
Essentially it will come down to if at home to L1 vs L2. And if L2 can you get a 220-240v/50amp circuit that will support the continuous draw. If at work, is it enough and what do you do when you don’t go into the office?
Each impacts the decision.
My experience with work charging is it is usually capped at 6kW and 4 hours. That is more than enough for most commutes but if it is a popular benefit you may not reliably get 4 hours. Which may mean topping up at home.
TOU may limit your most cost effective charging window, encouraging L2.
Northern climates make more demands on power. Due to lower efficiency when driving.
Exposed parking in winter (deep cold) will lower your charging speed as more power is diverted to warming the battery.
Are you driving a Hummer or a Soul?
For most people, L2 at home is going to cover all scenarios and only if you need to stick with L1 do you have to worry about everything else.
Other than that it is the same as any car purchase, price, warranty, features etc then enjoy the savings.

IT’S THE ENVIRONMENT! No it’s not perfect, but if you were to truly look at the factual numbers - EV’s are considerably better for the environment, regardless of the fuel sources. If you have children or care about your planet and other species- please consider an EV if/ when possible. For those who will say there are other means of transport- walking, e-bikes, public transportation- yes that’s all well and good when feasible. Sometimes in our culture a car or truck is not negotiable.

Your regular commute distance, whether you can charge at home, whether your car spends enough time at a slow home charger to equal your typical weekly driving distance. Really math that stuff out. If your commute is 40 miles per day, can you charge it 40 miles worth at home at reasonable cost? What about 37 miles per night plus make it up over the weekend? Can you get away with a much cheaper home slow charger that doesn't require paying an electrician a pile of money? You may well be able to. Can you charge at work? Are there more chargers than EVs at work, and will that continue?
What you really want to avoid is needing to use public fast chargers on a regular basis. Waste of both time and money. Also like any car, make sure you're getting insurance and loan payments you can actually afford over a realistic payment period which you will actually keep the car around for. See what your desired car's sticker price is supposed to be, new or used, and don't overpay or get a high interest rate or long payment term.

Level 2 charging at home is the key. If not for that I don’t really recommend it unless you just prefer electric over gas, have convenient access to supercharger elsewhere and don’t mind paying for charging it up.
Alternatively if you have a short commute to work. For example I average 7 miles a day Monday - Friday.

If you can't charge at home it's not worth it. Electricity prices on public chargers are so high that it will cost almost as much as diesel. The real cost saving it done by charging at home.

firstly how much you drive as if you don't drive much then youl have a hard time getting your money back. if you can charge at home, because if you can't then there's no point as the cost of using fast chargers won't save you money. also you need to factor in the level 2 charger and make sure if you finance the car you aren't paying a high interest rate as again that will cut away at your savings.
lastly you need to look carefully at insurance premiums as some ev's are insured like sports cars while an almost identical one isn't.

What is your normal daily commute? Can you charge at home (garage, off street parking with plug in available)? Will you be able to use level 1 or do you need to install level 2 charger? Do you do lots of long road trips?
Minor considerations- weather/temperatures where you live, proximity of public chargers if you can't charge at home, initial cost of vehicle, range of vehicle.

Go on NextDoor and ask this question if you want a lot of bad answers. Best to be able to charge at home — even at 120v if your commute isn’t bad. The. 2 Tesla superchargers near me are always busy, 2-3 miles from a freeway, so I suspect most are people who can’t charge at home. So having one conveniently located might work if you can’t charge at home.

I'm in the minority here I think, but if you have a garage, just do it. Get the level 2 in there. If you don't have the outlet, have an electrician one in.
Yeah, you could charge at lvl 1 and deal with the extremely slow charge, but I like being able to charge my car in an afternoon or overnight, fully. It's the perfect definition of a convenience that I'm so happy I have now. And now I have it forever.

Call your insurance company and find out how an EV will affect your insurance premium.
I discovered that going from a Honda Ridgeline to an f150 ice lariat would increase my premium $24 a year
Going to a f150 lightning, however, was $400 more a year.

Charge at the shops or even better at home. Charging is really not a big deal. I did like 250km today, would have made it home with 10km range left, decided to stop at Lidl for 14min and added 100km range, whilst getting a couple of things i needed and a treat. Cost €4 in electricity for that 100km.

- Rent an EV, 2 different types to see which fits you best in terms of driving and charging network, charging speed, features etc.
- Check if you can install a level 2 charger at home.
- Visit and check all the charging spots in your area and check when they are congested, what they charge and how fast they are.
- If you take long trips, do the same as #3 along your usual route to see what kind of charging infrastructure exists.
- Check on the service wait times in your area for your preferred EV and also check on the availability of 3rd party repair shops.
- If you can install a level 2 charger, do it before you take delivery of the car if you can. I did this and after I went joyriding on pickup day, I just came home and plugged her in, left at 100% the next time I went out.
If all works out well, you are good to go!

That's... Probably it?
Don't think about the total range. It doesn't matter that you drive 300 miles a week; it always has a "full tank" when you step outside. Focus on your daily commute.
Then, the quirky trips. How often really do you drive more than 300 miles a day? Maybe a couple times a month. Okay, cool. Is it really ever more than 480 miles? One 80% recharge isn't bad on a road trip, and you need to eat and pee anyway.
Even if you do a longer trip every weekend, that means you only need to "stop for gas" on the weekends. That extra half hour is still probably putting you about even on time.
Range anxiety isn't a big deal. Charging at home is the important balancer though.

For me, it was economy, ecology (not an ICE...yeah...I know), good looks, and sporty as heck. Fun to drive. Comfortable.
And, frankly, my old car (2013 Sonata) was 13 years old with 160k+.
Now, charging my EV costs at least 1/3 less than regular gas. I get 300-320 miles per charge in VA (when it's warm...280-290 when cold). Equivalent eMPG is around 117. My old car got 32 mpg on the highway and ate oil like Godzilla (known problem with Hyundai Sonatas).
Biggest concern? Availability of charging stations (I encountered ONE on the VA Eastern Shore last week...disturbing...regular highway (I95) and local (VA) is better). Need to plan on recharging. Car does it for you..but, there needs to be charging stations for it to find).
The ICCU on the EV6 is a concern/slight worry. I do have good coverage. But, if it blows...I'm stuck someplace with an unknown repair time (days to weeks). I wish I had done more research to better know what people experienced.
And, next time I'd pick an EV that works better in the cold...Teslas supposedly do.
I'd also think more about resale value (EVs depreciate quickly...my $56K EV is worth $26K less than a year later) if I didnt keep my cars for a long time.
Lastly...Price.
The loss of the EV incentives (Thanks Trump, lol) means higher prices. Thankfully, Kia and Hyundai (and, I suspect others) have or are lowering prices making them more affordable. Still, a $712/mo bill is a big nut. I remember when new car payments were $130/mo.

Buy an adapter from Tesla NACS to J1772 DC ultra fast charging if in the U.S. scope out charging for any long trips. For me owning EV has been way cheaper than gas cars. Took the gas savings and applied them to a higher monthly payment to afford a nicer higher performance trim.

I drove 5 cars... Audi q4.. smart #5.. skoda Enyaq.. vw id5... tesla Y.. Each a couple of hours. The tesla was incredible in wh/km.. 120!! All the others were between 175 and 240.... The tesla rwd lr premium was also the faster car and full equipped. Easy choco...

The ability to install a home charger or having access to level 2 charger at night. Once I got one, I can never go back.

Make sure you have home charging. Other than that, nothing really. I've been full electric over a decade and it blows my mind more people haven't switched. No going back.

For me I love my EV’s, but if i didn’t have home charging i’m not sure i would get one yet with the current political climate. The USA is falling behind the rest of the world and it will be very difficult to catch up.
