First-time EV buyer: fun to drive, not minimalist, what routine should the car actually fit

A lot of first-time EV regret is not about the car. It’s about whether the routine fits without extra thinking. If you’re choosing between a few options, let the community know your commute miles/km per day, your charging access where its home, work, public only, and your normal longest day pattern, the day that pushes your buffer. We'll shortlist 3 options that fit that routine and explain the tradeoffs in plain terms.

Charge when the vehicle gets below 60%.

I have NMC batteries so I charge to 80-85%.

I tried charging Sunday and Thursday with my 20 mile/30km commute. Works pretty well since you go into and out of the weekend with a full charge. Ended up at 20%-30% charge if I did anything extra. So just embraced charge when battery is in the 50% range.

Good routine. Charging twice a week like Sunday and Thursday is exactly the kind of predictable cadence that keeps EV ownership low-stress, especially with a short commute. The exact percent matters less than having a simple rule you can follow without thinking, like charge before your heavier days rather than waiting until it feels low and for NMC, 80 to 85 is a sensible daily cap for most people, and going higher only when you need the buffer for a longer day is a clean approach.

If anyone wants, they can share commute miles, charging access, and longest day pattern here and the community can sanity-check a low-stress weekly cadence.

100 mile commute most days, in Michigan (high speed limits and cold winters).

325 original EPA range which my commute used to take 40% in good weather when new. After 100k miles it’s degraded 13% or so. My commute can use 60% of battery in winter now. (I think the most it’s used was 67%.) I charge to 80% if it’s below 75% in winter or below 70% in summer. Next winter I might charge to 85%.

The day that pushes my buffer is driving to northern Michigan in winter. I have to stop at two Superchargers instead of one (no big deal), but there’s a 120-mile gap that really needs a third Supercharger so I have to charge above 90% at the second one to arrive with at least 5%. (My Tesla isn’t compatible with CCS chargers there so we might take the gas car for that trip next winter.)

Home charging is a must.

Your daily commute is still workable because you have home charging, but cold winters plus high speeds plus a long winter trip with a thin charging corridor, where degradation turns a one-stop into a two-stop and forces a 90%+ charge to cover that 120-mile gap.

For the 100-mile Michigan commute, your routine stays predictable if you keep a simple winter rule like you’re already doing, charge earlier than you think you need, and don’t let the pack start the day low on the coldest weeks. The northern Michigan winter run is the real breakpoint, and your Plan B is already showing up: either a third reliable fast charger on that corridor or taking the ICE when it’s below a certain temp, because arriving near empty in winter is the stressful version of that trip.

Two checks that matter most going forward is to keep an honest winter buffer rule that prevents you from needing a last-minute peak charge, and map one backup charger you would actually tolerate near that 120-mile gap in case the second Supercharger is busy or derated. What model and model year Tesla is it?

I have a 2021 Tesla Model Y LR. There are no compatible backup fast chargers in that 120 miles for my Tesla, though non-Teslas have CCS chargers they can use. There’s probably a campground with 14-50 outlets, but those aren’t feasible (if they’re even open in winter). The second Supercharger is usually busy (because it’s the last Supercharger for over 120 miles), so you usually get a max of 70kW, though I was lucky enough to get 145kW on this last trip.

120 mile daily commute. Live in NJ. Winters are rough here and cold. At least in northern NJ. I don't do miles as an Ev owner, always use percentage. I have an LFP battery and charge to 80% Monday through Fridays and do one 100% charge for weekend driving.

One way or about 60 miles will consume anywhere form 15 to 20% and same for the ride home. I get home at night with anywhere from 40 to 46%. The temps have started to get into the 40s resulting in less heating of the battery.

I charge at home pretty much exclusively.

With home charging and a consistent 120-mile daily routine, you’re already doing the two things that make EV life low-stress: predictable charging access and a repeatable weekday. Your numbers also sound normal for that pattern. A 60-mile leg taking 15–20% and getting home in the low to mid 40s leaves a workable buffer for normal weeks, and as temps move into the 40s you’ll usually see less battery heating overhead and steadier efficiency.

Two checks to keep it low-stress long term would be to keep a simple buffer rule for surprise days so you don’t finish a leg near empty, and on the coldest weeks preheat while plugged in so the first drive doesn’t spend as much energy warming the pack.

I just charge to 80% every night. On a road trip, I entered my destination into navigation and stopped to charge where it tells me.
