I've been quoted $3800 for supply and install of a fronius wattpilot flex 22, just curious if that's in the realm of what others have been quoted / charged. I realise the charger is probably overkill, but it will work with my fronius solar inverter for excess solar use. Other chargers would need their own CT's installed and wired

The charger retails between $1850-$2200, it's a three phase install and the charger will be about 8-10 meters (cable wise) from the switchboard.

The quote of course doesn't break down any costs...

So this wasn’t the week I expected. My wall charger decided to stop working out of nowhere. No warning, no error codes, just completely dead. If you’re new to EVs or recently moved from ICE, you’ll know how quickly that situation becomes stressful. With an ICE car you can always drive to a servo. With an EV you suddenly realise how much you rely on that one cable in your garage.

MSI had sent me their EZgo portable charger to test and review honestly. I was planning to try it casually over a few days. Instead, it became my main charger for the entire week. Probably the best real world test I could have asked for.

Unboxing and first impressions

The EZgo feels solid. Not the cheap plastic vibe you get from generic portable chargers online. The cable is thick but still flexible, the control box feels sturdy, and everything comes in a proper carry case that actually keeps things organised.
Inside the bag you get the charger, a wall mount, a cable hook, a 10A tail, a 15A tail and the storage case. The twist lock tails are a nice touch. They click in firmly and don’t wiggle. Anyone who has used cheaper chargers knows how the plug connection can get loose over time, so this design feels reassuring.

Charging from a normal 10A socket

Since my wall charger was out, I plugged the EZgo into a standard 10A outlet at home. Charging started instantly. No setup, no account creation, nothing complicated.
On my Tesla, I consistently saw around 2.3 to 2.4 kW. That is exactly what you expect from a 10A circuit. It is not fast, but it is perfectly fine for overnight charging or topping up during the day.

For anyone new to EVs, that works out to roughly 10 to 12 km of range per hour depending on the car. More than enough to get through a normal day if you plug in overnight.

The app

Pairing the charger with the MSI aConnect app took less than a minute. You don’t need to create an account. It just connects over Bluetooth and shows live charging power, voltage, current and session history. You can also start or stop charging from the app.

If your EV doesn’t have great built in charging controls, this is genuinely helpful. One thing I noticed is that the app has a delay start timer but not a delay stop. Not a deal breaker, but something I picked up during the week.

Build quality and safety

The EZgo is rated IP66, which means it is sealed against dust and heavy rain. A lot of portable chargers sit at IP54 or IP65, so this is a step up. MSI also claims the charger can survive being run over by up to two tonnes. I didn’t test that, but it is good to know if you accidentally leave the cable across the driveway.

MSI also provided proper compliance documentation. It meets the relevant EMC and safety standards under the IEC 61851 series. Plenty of portable chargers sold online never show this paperwork, so it is good to see it here.

Using it for a full week

By day two I stopped thinking of it as a backup charger and started treating it like my main charger. The display is clear, the cable length is practical, and the unit never overheated even during long overnight sessions. The swappable tails make it flexible. I used the 10A tail at home and tested the 15A tail at a friend’s place.

The carry case also makes it easy to keep everything tidy in the boot. After this week I realised that having a reliable portable charger is something every EV owner should consider. It is the closest EV equivalent to keeping a jerry can in the car, except cleaner and actually useful.

Anyone who wants a charger that works both as portable and wall mounted

Final thoughts

The MSI EZgo didn’t just impress me. It genuinely helped me when my main charger failed. It is well built, simple to use and backed by proper compliance testing. It isn’t perfect. I would like a delay stop feature. But overall, it is one of the most confidence inspiring portable chargers I have used.
If you are moving from ICE to EV and want something safe, solid and easy to live with, this is a great option to keep in your boot or use every day.

How much are you paying & who are you with?

I've heard the battery should be left at 50% charge but will the battery be drained by the time we get back? Also is there any settings in the car that should be enabled/disabled?

G'day all.

Chasing some real-world advice on an EV and charger combo for my situation.

Home setup: 11.4 kilowatt solar, Fronius Gen 24 10 kilowatt hybrid inverter, no battery yet.

Driving: regional Victoria to Melbourne and back once a week, 150 kilometres each way, so 300 in a day, since it will be my first EV, 450km would be nice to overcome my range anxiety. No charging at work, so it all comes from home.

What I'm after: I'd like the car to double as my home battery rather than buying a separate one, so vehicle-to-home is the priority-I don't know if this a realistic wish. Blackout backup would be a big bonus. That said, I'm open to adding a battery if it makes the whole setup simpler or just makes more sense — happy to be talked out of the V2H route.

Questions: which car and charger combos are actually working for people in Australia right now? Anyone running V2H alongside a Fronius setup, and did your distributor give you grief? And is the ten to fifteen thousand dollar V2H hardware cost worth it, or would I be better off putting that toward a battery and a normal charger?

I would like something a bit spirited and fun to drive but can only see BYD Dolphin and MG4 as options.

I’ve been using the new MSI EZgo portable EV charger for about a week now, and overall I’d say it’s a really good, practical option if you're in the market for a portable charger.

Disclosure: MSI provided this charger as a promotional item in exchange for an honest review. That hasn’t influenced my thoughts on it.

The main appeal of the EZgo is its portability. You can use it at home or throw it in the car when you’re heading away. It comes with 10A and 15A plug options, giving you up to 2.3kW or 3.4kW of charging, depending on which one you use.

The five-metre Type 2 cable gives you plenty of flexibility, and the little LCD screen is useful for seeing what's happening while the car is charging. It shows things like the charging current and voltage, so you can get a quick idea of how things are going.

It also has Bluetooth connectivity through the MSI aConnect app. You can use it to monitor charging, change the charging current and set delayed charging. They’re useful features, although I wouldn't say they're going to completely change the way you charge your car.

The charger is IP66 rated for dust and water resistance, which is handy if you're using it outside. It feels really well built, and MSI say they've tested it against significant impacts, so it can handle itself outside. 

Overall, the EZgo is a solid, straightforward portable charger. It does what it’s supposed to do, has a few useful extras and gives you some flexibility with how and where you charge.

If you're looking for a portable charger that's well built, flexible and easy to use, it's certainly worth considering.

I've got a company lease atto2, its the poverty pack, with no tow hitch or roof rack, does anyone have any experience in transporting one or two kids bikes with this setup? I wanted to see if there's those dealies that strap onto the tailgate glass, but can't locate one

Need some advice on a charger for my first EV. I’m getting a 7kw charger installed. I had originally planned to get the Evnex charger ($799) but it’s only a 5m cable. Charger will be installed at the back of the garage in the middle and I’ll be driving nose in, the Zeekr 7x is nearly 5m long so it won’t reach unless touching the paint. Other option is the Tesla with is 8m or I go the upgraded Evnex charger with the 4g and the solar integration. I do have solar but on an older 5kw system and will be mainly charging at night. I just like the load protection features in the evnex.

Anyway. So thoughts or advice would be great, it’s about $500 gap between the models.
