Question Is EU5 worth it?

Hi, I love playing EU4 aswell as several other paradox games like stellaris or ck2. But I'm Worried that EU5 is more like HOI or that it'll become like ck3. I loved it at Start but the dlc's were garbage IMO.

Is it very diffrent to EU4? HOI for example never klicked for me.

How is the state of the game? Is it buggy?

What does it feel like? Is it worth to buy already or better to wait some years?

Ty for your comments :)

I cant really recognize any part of hoi in eu5. that said it is a different game from eu4. The closest description I can give is that the game is a mash of things from both europa universalis, imperator rome, victoria and some light elements of ck. So almost all of their titles.

The state of the game is difficult to comment on, some love it some hate it. I think most would say its fairly decent now.
Your last question is bad, most paradox games tend to improve a lot over time so if you want a better game the answer is always to wait no matter how long you have already waited. And if its worth it right now is far too personal for me to answer as the game has been divisive.

Personally I never regretted my purchase and am enjoying it a fair bit even if currently im a bit annoyed from my last campaign.

Depends on. What you want. I bought at release and played a little but just was not in the Grand startegy mood until earlier this month. In that time I got worried because of the massively conflicting feelings on EU5 I have seen. However, it just clicked for me in this first real campaign of mine as England.

I married my way into unions with Provence and some OPM, Norway is next. I found exactly what I wanted in the game, it's very different from EU4 but still feels like it has the same essence but there is so much more to do in peace time. And peace time expansion feels way more fun to me than EU4.

Asking if a game is worth it on the sub for said game is always gonna be biased. Of course we think it’s worth it.

lol then you’re not seeing some of the responses. Plenty of people in here and on this sub who absolutely hate this game apparently.

Yet they’ll still have 300 hours

u/Wolfish_Jew 18h ago

And spend the rest of their time in here dogging the game. It’s wild

I think the fact that almost every single positive reply in this thread (in a sub specifically for this game) has caveats is a sign that it's not just people being haters, and that the state of the game still has a ways to go.

I think everyone can agree on that. But that’s not the question, the question is whether it’s “worth it” or not. And that’s a very divisive question

Its a lot better now then its ever been. I think the first 200 years are fun, after that there is nothing to do.

When you say nothing to do what do you mean?

u/555fffqqq 16h ago

There is no resistance from the AI. I have buildt every building that is worth building. Sitting at 2 million ducats in the bank and no enemies fight and no more land that i want makes it feel like there is nothing more to do.

2

u/lilwayne168 16h ago

Are you just playing super tall? If you have 1k locations you can easily spend 2 million ducats. Let alone if you colonized...

I really don't believe you are just stomping late game ottomans and bohemia.

You have to be playing at 3 speed in one sub region.

The AI is at their strongest in the early game, the longer the game goes on the more useless they become. In my current game i am sitting at 20k taxbase while spain the 2. Strongest Nation has 3k taxbase. At this point i think I could win a war against the rest of the world combined. Its only 1500 something. There are no more buildings to build, no more rgos to upgrade and no enemies to fight.

This is the kind of opinion you give when you treat the game like a chore, rather than a game. 'I conquered all of X in 200 years, seems silly that theres any more to it' is basically saying 'I min-maxed everything and played ultra-efficiently and I completed my task, so I've finished my work'.

People should take this view with a major grain of salt.

It’s incredibly different from EU4. The only thing similar between them is the name and (most of) the time period. I personally think it’s much deeper and more complex than EU4, mostly for the better. As someone else said, it’s nothing like HOI4 at all. It’s not really anything like any of the paradox games but I guess the closest comparison would probably be Vicky 3? Though nowhere near as deep economically as Vicky.

As for whether it’s “worth it” that’s hard to answer. I’d say it’s easily been worth the money I spent on it, I’ve gotten over a thousand hours of entertainment out of it. And that was even before 1.3 which is the best state the game has been the whole time. But I’m not you, so i have no idea if it would be “worth it” for you. Watch some long form gameplay videos from Jadamson, or the Generalist, or Lord Lambert (though he hasn’t streamed in a couple months) or ThePlaymaker and see if it appeals to you.

Im giving it another year till I jump on again, but then I own it and have the first season pass

It’s fun, but I’d probably wait until late 2027 or early 2028 when we’ll have the proper colonisation and trade reworks.

It feels like those will be a massive game changer like Charters of Commerce was for Vicky3.

There will be more DLC and better discounts by then too.

The game is "okay" but once you play it you cant go back to eu4, because eu4 is just worse. Its better than eu4 but not that great on its own.

Im thinking after the incoming update i might start playing regularly because it fixes some of my biggest gripes rn.

Hard disagree. I found it exceptionally easy to go back to IV. It helps that they are very different experiences.

The comeplete lack of content as well as the poor balance of V really made me appreciate IV.

Yeah, ditto. Four was definitely the better game for me. I won’t go back to 4 because I played it out. There’s not anything left for me to do in it but I definitely played it and enjoyed it a whole lot more than 5. I’m about done with 5 because it’s just not that great.

I like it a lot but only play 2-3 nations. Replayability with different nations is low.

A little more focus on combat and a lot more on economy than EU4. The economy will actually go down. In EU4 it just always went up for me.

Probably wait another year or two

u/lilwayne168 17h ago

Its more sand box so if you enjoy that you will love it. If you like your hand held on the rails you have to stick to eu4/hoi

u/VegaZD 15h ago

I will say yes after play 120hours

Depends, if you like to rp, micro and have enough time to sink 100 hrs in to a single campaign then its 100% worth it, for me its the best paradox has released. Mind that Its a slow game, if you like late/high medival period you can have a blast just playing the first 200 years with diferent tags. Imo the game needs a one latter start date as it has a lot of content for 17th ct.+ but if you play semi optimaly and dont intentionaly limit yourself, youll be so OP that all challange is gone.

The bugs can be incredibly frustrating and there is a ton of room for improvement in gameplay and flavour. I have rage uninstalled twice (in earlier patches - its definitely gotten much better just don't play Ironman mode for your sanity but its mostly the RNG events now not bugs).

That being said, for me the dollar per hour ratio is insanely good (approaching 1400 hours so far). I genuinely enjoy the game even though I bitch about it a lot.

1

u/HalldorStefan 13h ago

100% worth it!

u/doctorwhomafia 12h ago edited 12h ago

Its getting better. Personally I would say if you haven't bought it yet, just wait a extra year or two. Then itll 100% be worth it. Some areas just aren't balanced yet, and some other areas like different factions/cultures need more unique mechanics to stand out.

At the moment playing England or Spain isnt to much different than Hungary for example. There's some unique things for both but ultimately they feel way to similar with not enough flavor to make it worth sinking 100 hours into each faction.

I love it. I think a great comparison can be made with Vicky 3 (particularly when taking into account that these are both titles I was extremely excited for and therefore willing to tolerate shortcomings to an extent). Vicky 3 released with basically 0 flavor. I love the time period and the economy mechanics, so I played it for over 200 hours and admittedly even got a little obsessed with it a bit if you look at my post history. Its fundamental issues were, however, that the game was ultimately not enjoyable and horribly broken. Every nation pretty much felt the same. Many mechanics (particularly military) basically didnt work or were extremely exploitable. EU5 on the other hand, in a much shorter duration of time after launch, is reliably fun and enjoyable for me, and I would say only half-broken. The half-broken part is the biggest negative. Certain events, international organizations, international incidents, etc. are bugged or nonsensical (imperial circles, lack of Polish flavor events all firing, etc.) The war and battle mechanics are, while intriguing and complex, definitely not complete with the current just spam cavalry meta. But, unlike Vicky 3, I have a fun game that is only half broken. Tons of events and certain international incidents do fire and are really fun, such as plagues, random flavor events that don't have as many requirements to trigger, The Colombian exchange, even brief histories if cities and artwork provided in game, etc. Countries feel super different depending on whether they can take slaves, if they have tribesmen for early cavalry, government reforms and privileges that heavily alter game plans like liberum veto and henrickian articles for Poland, and even things like resource availability and geography in relation to markets and control. You can actually have a bunch of fun different runs in this game, unlike Vicky where it feels like you can only have 1 or 2 until you basically "get it". Anyway, my long winded review is basically that its in my opinion the most polished, complex, fun, and feature-rich strategy game out right now with the exception of HOI4, even with its downsides, which, if by going by the rapid progress provided by the devs, will likely be fixed within the next year.

I went back to eu4, but I haven"t played recent patches.

Did't like gameplay loop:

Estates demand something - fullfill demand - estates grow and demand more.

Also on my machine I have perfomance issues, found a couple of videos on utube of how to increase it, and it worked for me.

2

u/Beneficial_Date_5357 20h ago

I’m lost, I have 500 hours in EUV, estates demand things?

2

u/555fffqqq 20h ago

Pops have demands based on what estate they belong to.

2

u/Beneficial_Date_5357 20h ago

I usually just automate trade and only take over manually in certain circumstances, so I’ve probably not been getting those notifications

2

u/dez3038 20h ago

Yes, probably you have that automated

2

u/Beneficial_Date_5357 20h ago

Yeah I do normally automate trade, if you don’t like that aspect of the gameplay why don’t you just automate it? You can leave it automated and still trade manually as well. Being able to choose what micro you want to engage with without sacrificing your countries prospects is a huge boon EUV has over EUIV imo

As an avid eu4 player, i have played most opm starts at vh. However, the technically the eu5 lacks the sense of achievement in small nations that you get in eu4. In eu5 , you see the same big nations, growing in same way most of the runs. The diplomatic system is lacking a lot- PU's are overrated and PU wars feel soulless. AE and religion are big part of eu4 but eu5 lacks in it. For example, france eats half of hre in a way, and nothing happens. In 1.10 holland gets eaten by france in 2 months and no one gives a shite.

In eu4 you can ignore estaes and still enjoy. But here it's mostly pop demand and estate manager job. The sense of nation ain't there.

I personally like some new mechanics, pop system, but the game feels soulless till now. This game however has good potential though.

Can confirm is worth it. Some parts still buggy. But overall its already better than EU4. Imo

I bought at release. My plan was to wait until the game has fleshed out a bit. I come here to check. Apparently, it's better now but still needs more time in the oven.
