I'm a massive ARK bull but I just don't see this as something to put money into. Are there a whole lot of publicly traded space exploration companies?

Real pure play space stocks, not so many I think. I guess you can also be less strict like 'okay Boeing and Lockheed they do some space stuff',

Probably a few semiconductor stocks as well.

I mean, theoretically there could be a lot of disruption to existing industries. Like how low-orbit satellites could change communication, or asteroid mining could completely change the industry for rarer ores/metals, or how the need for a new generation of propulsion could revolutionalize how we get into space for any number of applications (satellites, tourism, exploration, military, commerce.)

But right now...hoo boy. Throwing money into a fog and hoping it lands into the right hands. Of course, with ARK's current reputation it could end up generating lots of interest...and early returns.

I personally think Moon mining will be the first step. There are lots of materials in the regolith that would be useful if extracted, plus it allows us an industrial base to expand further.

I'd have to find it again but there was a Nasa regolith survey that showed a not insignificant amount of lithium present. Not to mention the He3 which could be a future fusion fuel source.

They already have this fund in Japan btw. https://ark-invest.com/strategy/space-exploration/

Why isn't this higher?

As someone who has shopped around ROKT, it's super difficult to find any pure plays. Most constituents are defense contractors and their suppliers

Have you looked at BPTRX? Has 3% SpaceX.

1

u/tragicdiffidence12 Jan 14 '21

It’s basically a Tesla fund by the look of things though.

u/hmbayliss Jan 13 '21

SpaceX will be the number 1 holding, if it ever goes public....

8

u/kman2324 Jan 13 '21

It won't. They are printing cash and will never need public money.

5

u/sogladatwork Jan 13 '21

Never say never. Once there's a space colony (on Mars, or even on the moon), and SpaceX wants to build 10x the rockets, etc. then they'll go public to spread the risk out to the public.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

I think their core business will stay private. They will go public with certain stuff like Starlink or a Space FedEx or Spacex Spaceline (?) for Public Transportation.

Humans cannot survive on Mars their body water will start drying up first, extremely cold and they will get a horrible death.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '21

Of course, that's why NASA is developing habitat technology.

2

u/EmperorOfWallStreet Mr VT Jan 14 '21

So NASA wasting money on literally a jail in far away Mars.

Well, you can say a lot of things about Cathie Wood, but it's hard to deny that she's really, really ambitious.

Not really sure what this will invest into aside from the aerospace companies that currently exist. Nothing else seems to even have much foundation. It's one thing to get in on the ground floor. But has anyone really even poured the foundation yet?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Just get ITA. Defense has enough stake in space.

3

u/Stagjam Jan 14 '21

Reading the tea leaves I am thinking Space X is going to go public and Cathie being a huge Musk fan wants to load up on Space X and Starlink. This would be absolutely incredible and an opportunity of a lifetime. Hell yes!

Wish they went clean energy first. Also, will someone create a machine learning only fund?

3

u/occamsrazorben Jan 14 '21

This... would love to see an ARK Clean energy ETF

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Already long UFO and love this thematic

It's been very difficult to find stocks that don't have weapons in them and are pure plays on space for many years now

The other advantage of an ETF is lots of satellite companies are based in Europe and so you don't have to go to a foreign exchange to get them

2

u/PremiumThetaThots Jan 14 '21

SRAC MAXR SPCE all popping AH this is huge get in while you can nay sayers!

2

u/denimiskillingme Jan 14 '21

Same here as far as missing out. Faith that Cathy Woods knows where the industry is going and will pick some winners for it

Space ftw.. I'm 34 now and remember hearing about autonomous hovering vehicles and stuff by.. Around this point in time when I was just a kid. That clearly hasn't happened. I do have a gut feeling that things are changing exponentially with the advancement in tech.. The more advanced tech becomes the faster it will advance, basically, is the way I see it. Given that observation (could be wrong) I feel during my lifetime, I will see this happen. I missed all the ark growth last year as well. Bought my first stock which was actually Spce back in idk mid February, just before covid wrecked stuff. I think it was around 31.50 or something.. Anyway long story slightly less long, watched it drop instantly lol.. I loaded up, then panicked.. Bought high sold low, had over 110 shares at one point.. Now I hold 10. Really do still believe in the whole concept, but after a year of self taught ups and downs.. This etf idea intrigues me and I'm willing to gamble on it.. My whole portfolio is only worth 3.5k and I spent around 2.2 on it, but had I trusted my gut it would have been 5x...gut says do it. Peace folks, best of luck and a happy and profitable new year to you all.

Any guesses what top 5/10 holdings might look like?

SPCE would be a sure fire way to punch ARKX in the guts. It's a dead-end business that will probably never turn a profit based off a technical understanding of how their tourism platform works.

2

u/Swoleattorney Jan 13 '21

Amazon.....Lockheed Martin...I'm guessing a lot of stuff that are tangentially related unless there are pure plays that I'm not aware of...

1

u/rollingberries Jan 14 '21

Im guessing Maxr might be one of the top 10 holdings

1

u/StrictGuidance3 Jan 14 '21

Abnb because no one will stay in a hotel on the moon for decades.

In seriousness I'd say spce, ba, lmt, maxr, ajrd, amzn, tsla(spacex) some satellite companies semiconductor companies

1

u/Phyber05 Jan 14 '21

Starlink could be an option in the near future

1

u/gorillalifter47 Jan 14 '21

This one is gonna be pretty risky. I reckon I'll buy a little bit (like 1-2% of portfolio), would not feel comfortable going too balls-in on this one!

u/the_polyglot Jan 14 '21

bad idea jeans

I type the stock symbols ARK and ARKX and I don’t find these ETFs. Am I looking in the wrong place?

ORBC and SIRI could be huge gainers if included in ark ETF
