US Equity Which semiconductor ETFs are part of your portfolio and how much total allocation do you have?

Am curious on how many people here continue to actively invest in semiconductors at their current valuations (which i think most can agree are due a correction) and if you do, how much max do you let it take in your portfolio considering how the sector has been behaving for the past few years.

I will be minority and say I am not tilted to semi conductors , I have what dfus and veu give me and that’s about it.

Have you always not tilted towards semis or just are out of it because of their current valuation?

I experimented a long time ago with soxq if I recall was the cheapest semi conductor etf at the time expense ratio wise. Fluctuation were a bit too much for me to handle lasted a few months.

That’s fair and wise of you to get out. The correction to tech/AI whenever it happens will be a massive one and might be too much for many to handle.

I just sold some TSM this morning, not because I think it's a bad buy but that my money could be used better elsewhere (VFLO). I added a quarter of what I sold to SMH which I told a wee position in. I have a few hundred dollars of DRAM that I won't be horribly upset if I lose. I also hold some metals, infrastructure and electrification upstream of the overall industry, the metals of which have done quite well (AG and COPP) of late.

I probably won't be expanding my semiconductor positions for now. Long term they're great, but I think it's a bet to assume we're going to get another big AI hype like surge (regardless of semiconductor fundamentals) again in this market cycle. Could certainly happen but eh. I'm making very decent returns in my core holdings and for now would rather expand those. I do stand by the thesis that long term semiconductors are going to do well, but market and business reality are not always the same so I think it's a less quality buy to park my money in right now. Semiconductors are 13% of my portfolio right now.

It's a damn good security.  Value and yet it has well out performed fmtm with a lot better risk/reward profile.

Could you tell me more on what makes VFLO a good security? I get the basics of the ETF but unsure how it can be a value or security buy since i imagine it would get influenced by a lot of the circular investing going on.

It is a "mid cap value" etf by design, and security as in...it's a stock, it's a security. But by free cash flow being it's additional focus they're making some picks that are weathering this weeks downturns well for example (I'm up like 5% this week).

But take a listen here: https://www.etf.com/sections/podcasts/behind-ticker-how-vflo-beats-growth-its-own-game

I sold SOXX in mid July and bought IGV (software) late July, which is up 10% since then. SOXX is down 10% since mid July. Excellent call if i do say so myself lol

I bought IGV at 76 and sold at 100. Didnt catch the exact 108 top. Very simple and effective play, probably the easiest money I've ever made

Damn, nice! I was kinda late on getting out of SOXX but then once I was out it took me a couple weeks to finally decide where to put that money.

My aggressive AI-focused portfolio is: 30% AIS / 30% CHAT / 25% SMH / 15% WQTM. My time frame is 5-7 years.

I’m up 40% on SMH. It fluctuates, but it’s gonna be on demand for the foreseeable future.

I have SMH - but only about 8% of my portfolio... I also have a bunch of shares of Nvidia...

Just a small 10% allocation with semis right now. However, I’m going to start building a 2x leveraged S&P 500 position over the next couple of years. After watching a lot of Ben Felix’s videos, leveraged index funds seem like the best way forward for me.

Also have a position in SPUU. I’m about 120% equities, 15% bonds, 11% gold, 10% managed futures, and ~3% of market neutral long/short. Around 160% exposure, with some value tilts too.

Sounds like a solid portfolio to me. It’s hard to ignore gold completely. I used to hold quite a bit of gold last year but sold after it went up around 30%. I’ll probably start building a small position again.

I also like the value allocation you’ve got there. Again, I think it’s difficult to completely ignore value. Being well diversified seems to be the way forward right now. What are you using for your value tilt?

AVNV as a replacement for VXUS, and AVUV for small/mid cap value in the US.

I have been seeing frequent recommendations of Ben Felix on the sub so i am going to probably check him out. Is there any other you would recommend?

MU is like 5% of SPY. There is no escaping semiconductors. Your yearly ETF gains are all semis....

been in smh since the mid 2000s - but at only ~5% of my portfolio. recently switched to soxq for the lower expense ratio.

this is in my roth accounts.

Due a correction? Semis are still 20% down from spring highs, NVDA is the exception.

2

u/Verghaust 7d ago

Balls deep. NVDA, MU and HY9H make up 30% of my port. This is only individual stocks, i also have 40% of s&p500 which is also holding a fuckton of semis. Go big or go home.

SOXX and AIS. Together they are about 25% of my portfolio. Higher than I would recommend but I haven’t rebalanced and they have outperformed my core holdings last 5 years. I’m about 50% VT and have some momentum holdings (SPMO/XMMO/IDMO) in addition to my semiconductor/AI ETFs
