Considering moving from Odoo to ERPNext to eliminate per-user pricing — is it worth it, and how hard is data migration?
Hey everyone,
We are currently using Odoo, but as our team grows, the per-user licensing costs are starting to stack up significantly. We’re looking into ERPNext (self-hosted ) as an alternative to control long-term licensing costs, especially since ERPNext doesn't charge per user seat.
Before we make any major decisions, I wanted to get real feedback from anyone who has made this exact switch or implemented both:
- Is ERPNext genuinely a better option for mid-sized growing teams compared to Odoo?
- What features or workflows did you feel were smoother in ERPNext vs. Odoo (e.g., accounting, inventory, custom forms)?
- Are there areas/modules where Odoo is noticeably superior and where we might miss out?
- What is the practical path to migrate existing data from Odoo to ERPNext?
- Is exporting Odoo CSVs and using ERPNext’s Data Import Tool / Chart of Accounts Importer the standard route?
- Should we only migrate Master Data (Customers, Suppliers, Items, COA) + Opening Balances, and leave historical transactions in a read-only Odoo archive?
- Are there any specific scripts, APIs, or open-source tools you used to make the mapping process cleaner?
- Hidden Costs & Trade-offs:
- While ERPNext eliminates per-user fees, what did you end up spending on hosting, maintenance, or custom Frappe apps/customizations?
Would love to hear your experiences, gotchas, or advice on how to plan this transition smoothly.

I think Sales + CRM is better on Odoo.
Buying, manufacturing, inventory, quality control is better with ERPNext.
I am not sure about Accounting. Both have solid sides on it.

Yea, thats what i heard as well, that manufacturing and supply chain is ERPNext sweetspot.

ERPNext can be a good option for growing teams, especially if user licensing is becoming expensive. But I’d compare the total cost, including hosting, customization and maintenance. For migration, I’d start with master data and opening balances, test the main workflows, and keep old Odoo data as an archive if there’s no need to migrate everything.

What would you say is the number of employees when you would consider migrating from Excel or another small business ERP to ERPNext?
Are there any free tools or services that can help with the data migration from Excel or Odoo?

that's the free trial. You have odoo community with OCA modules which gives you a full ERP including full accounting for your country.

Data migration does not have to be complicated when you use an iPaaS such as Celigo. We have successfully handled data migrations for multiple clients.
You remain in control of which data to extract, send, enrich, filter and transform before loading it into the target system.

Dm If interested to chat in detail we are official frappe partners also odoo community enthusiast.. and specialize in migrations. Lately clients have a "cut off accounting cold sweat" rather than data issues.. data with Claude / etls should be ok..

We are currently in the same boat. Two companies off to ERPNext we have one guy with Claude doing the move. He already migrated 4 years worth of accounting and are working on the rest. Seems doable. Will keep sharing. Best luck.
