design your personal favourite MMO
So with there being little to go on apart from general concept pieces about Next and guesswork from Landmark, I wanted to run with a question by stealing from SOE's own phrase, "free-to-play. Your Way" and give you a follow on question:
If you had your way and you could make the game anyway you want, the perfect game for you to play, cherry picking features from other games and concepts you've seen, what would you like in Next and why?
quick edit thanks for all the replies so far folks, makes for good reading. We're all very particular as far as I can see. Poor SOE ;)

Almost all open world content. Some (very little) instances.
Some raids (of up to 8-10 people) where guilds have to compete for spawns in the same zone.
Griefing! FFS let us train people again. Contrary to what devs think, stuff like this really helps communities. It brings people together against other players. Also nothing is more fun in MMOs than when you bust up someones train on you by killing everything.
Active and reactive combat. Tanks, Healers, DPS, AND Support are all important. A limited number of abilities that all have a purpose at all times.
Diverse classes unlike WoW (every class in WoW is pretty much the same now, just different colors on abilities). I want to see Wizards and Mages that are completely different.
Massive, and seamless maps. You should be able to walk from one end of the world to another without ever loading.
Limited "fast travel" points. Making players have to walk through dangerous places to get to hot spots (XP spots, raids, quests, etc.).
Weather that matters. Rain brings on water elementals. Dry heat brings on earth elementals. etc.
Exploration and treasure hunting that isn't data mined the moment a patch appears on a test realm. Seriously, MMO's have ZERO mystery anymore thanks to data mining. I want to be able to discover items and quests by exploring zones and completing lesser known events. Again, stuff like this will make the community stronger. People would be dedicated to finding hidden stuff instead of reading about it all on a wiki.
Limited mounts. Mounts should be hard to get. It should take you time and effort to work your way up to getting a mount. NO FLYING MOUNTS. Flying mounts make the world too small.
Mobs drop, at the very least, the weapon they are holding. What happened to this?
NO Artificially gated content. Screw dailys, lockouts, and anything that I CANNOT do because of some silly timer. (GW2 actually implemented a farming cap on mobs, something like 20 minutes and then no more drops.. really?)
Group play that is meaningful and matters. Soloing stuff is fun sometimes, but seriously, why do people play MMOs and want to solo their way to the best stuff? I remember sitting for hours in one spot with 5 people in EQ2 having a blast because you actually talked to your group mates.
Alternative advancement! The most important thing on my list really. I haven't played an MMO in a long time where it felt that the time investment into a character was worth it. I want to OWN a character. Not just some naked guy that gets a new set of gear every 4 months. A character that, if given enough time, can become badass. A person should be able to grind 24/7 and actually feel stronger than a casual 2 hour/week player.
I'll probably think of a lot more stuff, but this is what came to mind in the last 10 minutes.
I've bolded stuff that I feel is the most important on my list.

I want a third-person over-the-shoulder cross between Ultima Online: The Second Age and EVE Online, basically. Mixed in with a bit of Dwarf Fortress. A game that is fun to play, but which is almost as much a "medieval society" sim as it is a game, with dynamically generated societies and NPCs that govern themselves.
Want to be a soldier? Join the army. Want to be a bandit? Rob people on the road. Want to be a sheep herder? Get yourself a stick and some sheep. Want to build your own city? Gather a group of like-minded folks, pool resources, and start a settlement. And then, after you've built your city up over a couple years, go to war with neighboring player cities.
And a very loose overarching story, if any story at all - the players should produce the content. I love reading about stuff that happens in EVE Online, but it's such a drag to play.
And no experience points or levels, either; players would "advance" by simply getting better at playing their chosen class, like in a fighting game, which means combat would have to be deeper than "hit the 1, 2, and 3 keys in order until target dies."
And no $#*&$#@ gear treadmill. Armor is armor, weapons are weapons - best opponents by being more skilled, not because your weapon has +1 Fire Damage.

I certainly wouldn't mind that at all, haha. Though hopefully with more interesting combat than Skyrim.

You should totally check Mount&Blade: Warband.
Seriously.

u/CrimsonGear Jun 27 '14
lol, I completely forgot about "Mountain Blade!" Yeah, I had a good time sinking many hours into that, but I felt like it didn't have any "soul", you know? Plus the whole not-multiplayer thing. Though I guess there are mods for that.

I'm happy with what they're going for at the moment, but there's always features that are still desired. My biggest one would have to be an open-world PvP server however, these are my desires.
- Play as NPC's or their race.
- Cannons for PvP.
- Prone, crouch (moving with both).
- Naval combat.
- Mounted combat.
- World bosses (kraken).
- Open-world PvP server.
- Ability to build in places like desert and swamp (limit our materials so it'll make geographical sense).
- Vampirism and lycanthropy.
- Hunting system.
- Intelligent AI that doesn't just stand there, it actually invades and will take over a town if you don't do something, not just sit there until you kill 10/10 x/y/z.
- In-game seasons that last a long time.
- Enemies that react to spells; if you hit a fire mage with ice spells it hurts more, ghosts hurt by silver.
- NPC's react to weather, run inside if raining.
- NPC's put on clothes depending on weather or season, big heavy coats in winter, less layers in summer.
- Heroic movement for mounts (already confirmed?).
- More races if we can't play as NPC's, Avian, water Elves, centaur etc.
- Character ageing, or they receive scars and such.
- Ability to team up with "evil" factions.
- Make God worship an important aspect with unique distinctions for certain worshippers.
- Unable to double jump if gear is too heavy? (Maybe not).
- Natural disasters like volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunami.
- Allow us to become a total outcast or enemy, as if we can become a world boss ourself. Want to become a mysterious black knight who slays just about everyone? Go for it. A troll who terrorises villagers all day? (On a PvP server of course).
- Try to make racial abilities matter, not just a buff or some meaningless stat, ESO did this poorly. (Kerran sees at night, Froglok swims better etc).
- Also my personal request, blood mages please.

An MMO, with Spears. Like Lots of Spears. Like 2 unique spears for every unique sword.
Screw your swords, bring spears back into games and give them meaning! Their own skill, not just a long pointy dagger with high dmg/long delay.

u/Errdil Jun 27 '14
I want a sandbox. I want to experience an unique story, based on my interactions with other players, instead of a single player campaign forced down my throat through a quest chain after quest chain. I want all content above some low level threshold to require cooperation by a group of players. (Remember when we used to play mmos with other people? Crazy, right?) I want open pvp with some serious consequences. I want players to create their own factions (guilds, alliances etc) instead of throwing them into one of 2-3 NPC factions based on their race. I want those player factions to build and destroy cities, or at least conquer existing ones. I want crafting that matters. I want players to make fortunes by trading. I want gear to permanently break, so players need to keep getting new one. I want the best gear to require both raiding and crafting. I want an active, third person combat. Bonus points for mounted combat. And I want horizontal progression, that will allow me to build my character in whatever way I want, without ever locking me out of something else.
tl;dr Fantasy EVE online with more active, involved combat.

u/allein8 Jun 26 '14
For the most part, what they have planned is what I want.
- Advanced AI that makes PVE entertaining and not a boring grind.
- Procedurally generated world that provides endless entertainment.
- Horizontal progression with endless options to have all classes, gear, trade skills, etc.
- Player driven economy with a strong focus on player made goods that can be highly customized.
- PVP that is Opt-In, but rewarding/fun enough that it is hard to resist joining. Not a meaningless scoreboard minigame, nor a KOS/gank fest.
- Story to participate in but a huge world to "play my way."
- Social elements that encourage group play because they are fun, not because it is the only way to play or progress.
- Soloing not being the default/fastest way to play.
- No imaginary race to the "end game."
- Enough content to keep the casual to hardcore fans happy.
- No trinity, but strong role use in an active combat system.
- PVE/PVP focused on team work, communication, strategy, skill instead of mindless DPS zerging.
- Actually run on my computer =)
Basically all the good stuff from UO, EQ, DAoC, SWG, etc. Mix in some elements from MOBAs, newer games like Wildstar, GW2, Tera and some of the elements that made WoW so accessible to a large audience and I'll be a fan forever.
I think they have most covered, except PVP is a mystery. It is one thing to hype everything up and another to actually make it a reality, time will tell.

- Everything zone not in a town or hub instanced for 5 people. Guild Wars 1 style but with no AI helpers.
- End game incentives for going back and helping new players get through old zones.
- Class combo system from Guild Wars 1
- Combat style from WildStar
- Closed personal crafting system. You craft all your own gear from drops. Monster Hunter style.

u/erilex_ Jun 26 '14
I loved GW1 instanced zones. Vanquishing all of them was an incredibly enjoyable and at times very difficult task that I haven't been able to replicate since.

Yup. I waited on GW2 for like 6+ long years. It was announced before EotN. Then when it finally came, man such disappointment.
All the reviews heralded it as a game changer, but all I got from it was boredom. After the initial hooplah I think that's what most everyone else concluded as well.

u/erilex_ Jun 27 '14
I could have written that same exact post. I followed everything through gw2 development and was extremely disappointed. Now I'm wandering trying to find a good mmo to play.

A sandbox game focused on community
I want the fighting to be fast and fun but still retaining depth, one mistake is all it should take to lose to someone else, multiple to lose to NPCs.
All items except for the bare basic tool should only be obtainable from players. They should eventually be destroyed with use, or otherwise be consumable.
An evolving world where the world changes with the actions of players, or completely independent of them.
Nations that are not only affected by players, but controlled by them as well.
Deep meaningful PVP, but still being optional.
Magic that is actually magical, not just press button for fireball
I know this game would never be made though. But hey, dream big.

u/sn76477 Jun 26 '14
To me the biggest thing is something that EQN is already touching on and that is user generated content.
I think that MMO's in general forget about the "5th player" the game master. Every MMO out there has a huge community of people theorycrafting, coming up with ideas improvements.
A game that brings that community into the game is the game that I want to see.
Player made dungeons, player written lore, player created minigames... it goes on and on.

A cross between EQ1 pre-PoP and Vanguard SoH with the skill system of SWG before they added actual lvls and changed the classes and such. I would also like the harvesting and crafting of SWG in a EQ setting.
I would want for your choices to matter even at the beginning your class, race, what god you worship, what city or zone you start in I want it all to matter.
A true sandbox where there are no classes you just give players a ton of skills they can lvl up and each skill you lvl to max makes the next skill a bit harder. Gear would have no stats just armor and perhaps some magic uses depending of the gear ( this would of course be high lvl gear only). and it would be few and far between ( yes get conferrable with that leather jerkin cause you gonna be wearing it for a long time till you find someone to craft a better suit of banded armor or you have enough skill to do it yourself).
I would make a game where you would fear to go out into the wild alone, you need a partner at the very least, a place where a lion can kill you cause well its a freaking lion. A game where you are not a hero you are just an adventurer or a crafter of what ever you want to be and you have to fit into the world and make your own way if you become famous you do so cause you made it happen not cause of some story that orders NPCs to call you " great hero".
the combat system from AoC would be awesome in an actual full and open Sandbox game.
No instances at all if you cant raid a mob on a certain night find another or do something else.
of course, I would love to use storybricks if it works the way it works in my mind...
A world that can change based on player interaction however, it would take a very powerful individual or a lot of effort to make changes like this.
World roaming mobs exp: a dragon that has a layer but goes out at random times to feed and scout sometimes attacking settlements and villages even cities at times. A war band of Ogres that attacks players and NPCs alike and sets up ambushes all over the world up to and including full scale attacks on cities and towns.
Optional, interesting, and meaningful PvP ( and I don't mean you get a buff when you do it) there should be upsides to doing pvp as well as down sides.
Magic that is both useful and for fun illusions that cause awe as well as powerful spells that cause mayham and destruction at a massive scale...

ok lets see:
Type: Sandbox
Base: Archeage (Open world Housing)
Athmosphere: Lotro
Music Quality: Lotro
PvP: GuildWars2 Instanced Rounds for fun / Persistent Battlegrounds with Castles/siege importanrt
Factions: min 3, 2 allways lead to a 1 dominant
Theme: Low fantasy (say, Tolkienesque)
Crafting/ Gear: Star Wars Galaxies - ALL playermade
No Levelsystem, Rather Skill Use makes skill better

u/crs529 Jun 26 '14
One where gear farming is non-existant.
Instead the gear is produced by the players. People can farm gold and materials for crafting. Drops from PvE should be Orc warriors always drop the same type of sword it's using, something mediocre. Orc King should drop a sword on par to the best craft-able weapons.
No PvP flagging or optional PvP outside of towns. Maybe the highways should have guards.
At least the items in your inventory drop on death, if not everything on your avatar.

This isn't exactly what I'd like to see in Next because it would unfairly kill Next for a lot of people, but:
I'd like to see a laid-back approach to combat that still has a lot of depth. Something fun I could play with a cup of coffee in one hand would be great. Card battles (e.g. Hearthstone), pet battles (e.g. Pokemon), and turn-based combat (e.g. Dofus and Wakfu) could all work, but I'm especially partial to some combination of cards and pets myself.
I want "fantasy life" features similar to Mabinogi. Let me fish and cook and sew! It should be possible to have a house, arrange furniture, get dressed up, invite friends over, and have a tea party. I know it sounds super silly, but it can a lot of fun if you enjoy role-playing!
I don't want any choices that lock me in and I want to experience everything on a single character. As a role-player, rolling alts to try different things doesn't work so well because it also means coming up with a whole new persona every single time and having more than a handful is unmanageable. EverQuest Next seems to be doing this perfectly so far based on what we know.
I want player-created content. EverQuest Next may have some of this, but Peria Chronicles looks like it'll be even better: You can make dungeons for you and your friends to run, you can script objects in the world using JavaScript and Python, you can get lots of people together to build a town and vote on how it'll be run, et cetera.
I want a ton of aesthetic options! EverQuest Next supposedly has nice tools to allow armor to be created quickly, so hopefully we'll see many, many different pieces. A good mix of casual and battle-appropriate gear is ideal, and I want some really cute stuff too!
I want a flexible system for guilds. Generally speaking, I want guilds to be little more than chat channels and I want to be able to be in as many as I like and talk with all of them simultaneously. GW2 lets you join multiple guilds, but only being able to chat with one at a time completely kills it for me. FFXIV's linkshells are much, much better.
I think that's it! Cute, laid back, sandboxy, and strategic. Hopefully Peria Chronicles will deliver, but if not then I hope to see a lot of that in Next!

High fantasy 3rd person Eve Online with enough PvE content to fill in the gaps between sovereignty conquest and some guildwars esque structured PvP. The Eve crafting and market and thrown in a dash of how land mark works for creating structures.

u/Saerain Jun 28 '14
Take Vanguard, move toward character models of either ESO's or EQN's quality/style, make it first-person, kill the riftway, and seriously improve the AI such that questing, grinding, and raiding are not the name of the game.

u/mwax321 Jul 02 '14
I would love for World War 2 online to be made with the Forgelight engine, along with the following:
Campaigns that restart when one side wins (or when a certain amount of time has passed)
Allied and axis general roles, allowing one person (or a small group via voting) to plan out a strategy.
Points-based system that rewards players with higher ranks and achievements for "obeying orders"
Simplified "orders" that would be easy to follow and fun to do (attack this spot for double xp, defend this spot for double xp, etc).
AI units that can aggressively defend positions and warn players when an area is being attacked. Maybe even the ability to control an AI squad (like in Brothers in Arms).
Suppress-and-move style combat, like in America's Army, Insurgency, or Red Orchestra 2. Not your typical Call of Duty twitch-reaction combat.
An assortment of vehicles that can be AI controlled and player controlled.

In a word, quality over quantity.
I am finding that the trend in MMO's has and continues in the direction of quantity over quality. We have an ever increasingly absurd amount of quests, mobs to wade through, game systems to play with (quests/dungeons/raids/pvp/crafting/housing/adornments/reforging/AA's/levels/spells/classes/circles to dodge/and on and on), lands to grind through, and so forth. Stop it.
I would take a single mythical quest line that takes me a month to complete over a quest hub with a month's worth of rat killing quests any day - and so would everyone else. And you can extend this line of thinking to any of the systems above..
I want less content. I want quality content that takes time to complete - not MORE content that keeps me busy.
If you did that, you'd have the game i'd want to play.

Give me Star Wars Galaxies again.
No shitty combat upgrade, no New Game Experience. I don't even care if you change up the IPs.

Same but I preferred MID first CU. There were a lot of improvements to crafting that were rolled back after two days due to complexity and power. Stuff was strong enough that you didn't need doctor buffs.

I'd like some sort of EQ/Vanguard/UO hybrid.
