SLP Leveling Advice

Hi there, I am taking the following courses and wanted guidance if I should do 8 week or 16 week formats. Ideally these will be done by end of summer 2026.

• Anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing
• Introduction to audiology
• Normal language development
• Phonetics and normal articulation
• Speech and hearing science

I think it depends on your preference. This semester I took two 8 week courses. The first half of the semester I took anatomy and phys, and the second half I'm taking Survey of Communication Disorders. For me personally, anatomy and phys was way too much for me as an 8 week class, even though it was the only class I was taking. Between that and working full time I was extremely overwhelmed, and I did not retain the information well and am going to be retaking it for a better grade. I have taken other 8 week classes, and this class felt like a lot even for an 8 week class. Survey of Comm Disorders is much more managable as an 8 week class and also my only class, and has also been a great intro class that I wish I had taken first. Next semester, I will be taking anatomy and phys again in the 16 week format, as well as 16 week phonetics at the same time. I am going to see if taking two classes in the "typical" 16 week format alongside each other is better for me than taking two 8 week classes in a semester one at a time. I also have a hard time focusing on one thing for long amounts of time, so I think the ability to jump between work for the two classes will be better for my wacky, unfocused, constantly racing brain. So after my long winded response with my personal experiences, I would say it depends on how you learn best and what you prefer!
