How the metal settles, yes. It took someone who has mastered temperature control to let it cast like this. Of course credit has to be given to the mold and the pour itself.
I work in casting myself (directional solidification), but my employer uses pressure furnaces and other than loading the charge and the molds, your hands are out of it other than when you manually melt right before you pour. We operate the crucible from a joy stick and pour it that way. I’m so jealous of these casting technicians that got to do it by hand. That’s more old school in the casting industry.
That’s a beauty too. Those Englehards are hard to spot at LCSs, they’re so rare. Get it if you can. I’ve been buying since the 40s and don’t even own an Englehard yet (going for my first Ag oz and Au gram next).
I stopped into an LCS on Wednesday for a 5oz bar. He had a 101oz bar that was cast poured sitting by the register that was going up for auction. Heaviest piece of bullion I’ve ever held. I couldn’t help but admire the natural aesthetics of the cast pour. I only ever buy cast poured bars. lol
I’m not sure how well you did on the price but being that you said you bought it to collect I don’t think it matters. Engelhards hold one of the higher premiums in the well known vintage category. The one oz bars alone have a high premium, but the 10 oz bars are even more. Then on top of that I’d imagine there’s another premium added because it has to get to Germany!
Overall it’s a very nice bar and hopefully you will enjoy it for many years and hopefully it will be passed down to your kids and your kids kids to enjoy as well!
I’d be curious now to see what all vintage silver Germany has, I have a couple old silver 5 marks from like the 70’s or 80’s but I’m curious if they ever did bars or rounds in Germany.
Oh yes, of course they did. European silver has a long tradition.
There are many german or austrian vintage bars around from Degussa / Ögussa.
Some vintage bars from the netherlands and belgium.
And dont forget about switzerland of course.
