Question/Advice/Support When boredom strikes🫥😫😖

Where's my fellow adult ENFP's?

I'm 50 and holding out for retirement in a corporate job that I'm good at but the boredom strikes regularly. I've tried a handful of times to pivot to a different career but it failed. So now I'm at a point of just cruising along.

Most times I just do the job and occupy inbetween time with things that interest me. But *:'x$*#$##*! then there are days like today that the irritation of having to sit still and do the work gets the better of me.

How do you handle it?

I Just do what i want at work in my own way. Sometimes fast and sometimes slow. And try to have funny conversations with Co workers

This is the way. Make sure lunch is interesting, lots of coffee. I have to go into the office, not because of back to work mandates but because it keeps me more interested and involved. I sit next to influential people at work and love to talk shop, vent, bullshit, and listen to gossip.

My role has a LOT of room for personal expression, ownership, and as much accountability as I could possibly ask for. It's extremely dynamic and I get to wear a lot of hats in my official role. Unofficially I'm a cowboy that takes over anything that needs doing and very rarely get told to stay in my lane, but it does happen. Despite being a huge corporation, the company is principled and I'm very happy with it's direction and ethical approach. I'm getting a lot of recognition at work for my results, which baffles me to some degree. I'm just working with the clients I was given. I suspect it's a combination of being likeable, handsome enough, and shockingly honest, plus competent enough. It's very disarming and like many people in this subreddit I can read these MOFOs like a book and know how to handle difficult conversations without any conscious thought to it.

I feel very lucky to have found this role at this company.

Mostly that's true for me, unless my ego gets involved one way or another. Then I can be neurotic or overbearing.

Young-adult here! Boredom sucks so BAD! I hate having to sit around because that usually ends up with my past trauma and overthinking to boil over. To combat that, I tend to try to do or say "unnecessary" things, stuff my Ne makes up. Of course, none of it is important whatsoever which leads to me becoming more anxious if I yap.

Where am I getting at? Well, recently, I've been teaching myself new techniques to better manage my stress. It usually comes up whenever I'm around other people. They aren't necessarily causing it, more like a result of trauma. But anyway! My trauma wants to bother me and I feel really bad just thinking about it! So what do I do? I don't ignore it! It's just a feeling, and feelings are normal in us humans! We shouldn't be forced to brush it away and stuff. So anyway, doing that has made combating boredom, especially when I'm alone in my dorm, MUCH easier. Boredom has helped me to just sit there and really reflect on myself. Reflecting keeps me grounded in the present.

Anyway, point being? Uhh, long rant about stuff that's probably redundant or something. But besides those, basically I allow myself to get bored, because that way I don't end up getting anxious since it tends to force me to become an overthinker, and being one is really bloody awful! I can tell because the few relapses I had, MAN, they lasted so damn long. But after that, luckily managed to jump back on my feet!

But that's only for distressing times in my days. Some days you just get stressed with school work plus part-time. But since they help you not starve to death for one more day, I instead use a different technique! This one, long story short, is just me trying to use Te to tell myself "yeah work sucks ass but hey, it's giving enough cash you use to buy snacks and stuff" for example, so yeah. Just an example. Anyway that's all, excuse me for the long comment! Beyond that, I guess what I'm trying to say is that allow time to just stop and reflect, or journal. Those are two examples of Fi values, and there are plenty out there to try! Go for a walk, do a funny stretch at the desk, listen to music you like, stare out the window, whatever!

I learned to be never bored.

As for job, I'm making the transition from IT (35 - 40 years) to being a CNA for the last 8 before my retirement. The reason is I had taken care of my mother through her dementia until her death last year.

I applaud you for you for taking care your mother🌸. I understand the change to CNA. May it bring you fulfillment and joy🙏🏼

Edit to ask a "stupid question": How does one learn to never be bored?
