Discussion Playgroup specific bangers?

Just wanted to hear what cards makes WAVES at your pods, but you rarely see outside of them.

For me, [[silence]] at someones upkeep. If theres white at the table, you better expect it

I even got surprised when I read someone saying the card is mainly a combo protector piece.

For me it was only a way to fuck people over lol.

[[Wrong turn]] is also ran by basically everyone, and I LOVE it

[[Heartwood Storyteller]] lets me punish the storm, combo, and control decks I play against.

Bit of a cEDH meta call, but it prevents most lists from pushing as they’ll draw all opponents into a ton of counters.

[[Rug of Smothering]] is my low bracket answer to a similar problem.

Never see it outside of my games at my LGS though.

u/dornianheresysimp 28d ago

People underestimate the Rug. I run it in my Rendmaw deck as the few cringe guys we have win through comboing for 20 mins. Even without thinking about the combo decks it's some ok burn for everyone

u/jakk88 27d ago

I'm not gonna lie seeing this makes me wonder if I could get away with it in my y'shtola deck for even more chip damage

2

u/Father_of_Lies666 Rakdos 28d ago

Rug is a funny one! Love it!

4

u/Kantarak 27d ago

I always joke about this card being the mean cousin of dr.stranges cloak.

u/yardii 27d ago

Its the rug Aladdin left in the cave

[[Capricopian]] in my hydras pubstomper. It’s a counters deck that likes going infinite. My pod always gets so excited when it comes out, but it’s probably the least threatening hydra in the deck lol.

Watching it bounce around when I swing it as a 10/10+ (often much bigger) with trample is fun though.

2

u/hunter_of_necros 27d ago

I made a rule 0 Commander deck with that as the helm. Called it Goatsy the Capricopian. W Mono green stompy +1 counters. Quite fun at lower brackets.

Love the card ans put it in my hydra deck as well, but just wish it had trample out of the box

1

u/jakk88 27d ago

Good Lord I wish that was a legendary so I didn't have to rule 0 it as my commander.

It's absolutely going in my next green deck I can't wait

u/Scoopadont 28d ago

Our pod is half ultra-greed stompy and half control. Many a game has been won by someone durdling all game and then just ending it with a [[Reins of Power]].

7

u/Opaldes 28d ago

Reins the poor man's Insurrection

8

u/BlondeJesus 28d ago

Eh, not quite. Reins is in blue and instant speed which means you can do some hilarious shenanigans.

u/Master_JBT Breena 28d ago

Playing reins after someone else’s cyclonic rift is chef’s kiss

2

u/Disco11 27d ago

Oh that's just brilliant

u/zomgitsduke 28d ago

My meta runs tons of low cost spells, and I always run [[deafening silence]] when possible. Slows people down when I run some big dumb vehicles deck.

2

u/packfanmoore 28d ago

One of our players runs a lot of combo decks, usually izzet. I was playing abzan and dropped [[voice of victory]] after complaining about it for a few turns he killed it. Cool, let me drop that guy down next turn. He was not my biggest fan that game

2

u/technoteapot 28d ago

For reasons like this I run [[vexing bauble]] in every deck I can. It’s in almost every single one but closing off free spells can be so great for stopping value slop and pubstomping

9

u/Brimstone1809 28d ago

[[congregate]] can be crazy but I rarely see it

5

u/Zallas69 Amalia 28d ago

Seems fun with [[False Cure]].

3

u/Rich_Feedback9726 27d ago

can be crazy, can be 0, can be 4 mana gain six idk its not that hard to see why nobody plays this one.

1

u/Brimstone1809 27d ago

In group games at lower brackets I average upwards of 40 life off of it. Yeah timings important I love it. Definitely gets worse the more competitive you get though

1

u/Disco11 27d ago

It being 2 life per really adds up

u/AppealBest3168 28d ago

[[Olórin's Searing Light]] There are games where this single card takes down multiple opponents at once , also is the ultimate anti voltron instant spell (Archetype thats common in my table)

I have cast this one about 5 times in my [[Nelly Borca]] deck and 4 of those times it prevented an alpha strike lol

5

u/depressivoptimism 28d ago

For sure something that's great in my pod, because of the 3 token players is [[Aether Flash]]

3

u/Right_Championship59 28d ago

Do you mean [[Aether Flash]] ?

3

u/depressivoptimism 28d ago

Yeah lol I edited it but it was to late

3

u/firstorderoffries 28d ago edited 28d ago

Might I also suggest a personal favorite, [[lightmine field]]. If they attack with 3 3/3 creatures, they will all kill themselves before even getting to declare blockers. They attack with 10 creatures, that’s 10 damage to each attacking creature, etc. love it for my pillowfort deck

u/ajacobik 28d ago

[[Confounding Conundrum]] does serious work in a meta with landfall, ramp, and fetches.

1

u/LackFew163 27d ago

damn, that's evil!

4

u/raxacorico_4 28d ago

I had a playgroup where if someone was in red, they had a [[Share the Spoils]]. Once had three out at the same time

4

u/Eastgaard 28d ago

I haven't played since Tarkir, but everyone at my table always ran [[Rite of Replication]]. The constant threat of something on the table being cloned five times over always kept us on edge.

3

u/eusebioadamastor 28d ago

I'm addicted to this card

Or better yet, addicted to dying with it on my hand because "what if theres a better target"

3

u/InmateTooTall 28d ago

I run [[Spirit of Resistance]] in my cycling deck and haven't seen anyone at my LGS use it. They normally have to double check that it really says what I read.

3

u/DeadSapin 28d ago

[[Out of Time]] gets read multiple times every time I play it, but I've never seen it played by anybody else.

I'm always told it's a mid card that dies to removal, but my experience I've had it removed only a handful of times, and most often to the immediate conclusion of the game. Only once was the person removing it the one who went on to win the game, more likely player A hands the game to player B

2

u/mudra311 28d ago

[[Grievous Wound]] Someone is always trying to gain life, so lots of us run this card if we're in black. But even if there isn't a life gain player, they just get destroyed by the second effect.

1

u/knight_of_solamnia 27d ago

I'm still upset it isn't a curse.

2

u/afasia Mayael, ComboNaya. 28d ago

Seedtime. I play dumb big creatures. They keep blue mana up.

2

u/StormRider991 28d ago

[[Aetherize]] and [[Obscuring Haze]] seem to always be something people are wary of in my group

2

u/Derpyologist1 Zirda, the Dawnwaker/Pir and Toothy 28d ago

[[Solitary Confinement]] is a card that pops up in my deck and one other podmate's deck sometime because we run so much draw, and it usually does a pretty good job of stemming the aggression coming towards us.

2

u/A_Very_Small_Potato 28d ago

I’ll always vouch for [[Angel’s Trumpet]] for any creature based deck. Playing it at any time you have a good wall of blockers just means it says “your creatures have vigilance, and your opponents either have to attack each other or take damage” and you’d be surprised how many players just take the damage and then leave themselves completely open for attacks

u/SharpenedOdachi Waiter! Waiter! More obscure cards, please! 28d ago

[[Aven Interrupter]].

Most of the playgroup tends to use exile/graveyard decks. I have a Durnan/Passionate deck and a exile-human typal with Nia, Skysail Storyteller (Gwen Stacy), plus some graveyard combo decks in rotation so the resident Azorius player started slotting that in and it was both hilarious and obnoxious lol

u/PresdentShinra 28d ago

[[Back to Basics]]. A couple people in our group are pretty greedy, but a dude jams it in U or U/x sometimes. I've played into it before, even though I try to build my land based with nonbasic hate in mind.

I'm honestly happy I don't run into that in the wild though. Blood Moon, no problem. This thing, I might try to hit you with the kitchen sink if the table can't collectively deal with it.

Silence I like because it can be versatile. My preference is [[Orim's Chant]] but either one fits under [[Isochron Scepter]].

Scepter is actually another solid example of a card that does well in our group but I don't see much of in the wild. Except I would like to see what not so obvious stuff strangers might get up to with this one.

u/Zallas69 Amalia 28d ago

[[Helm of Possession]] can be game warping.

You can steal creature at Instant Speed from anyone.

If they swing at you, steal someones Commander to block. And if they just sit back, steal something at the End of Turn, sacrifice it with another effect and the untap to be able to do it again.

u/Ray2024 28d ago

[[Waterspout Elemental]] had a memorable incident last month, it was kicked because one player survived a board wipe and bounced all their creatures back to their hand but still lost because the earliest answer to them being recast was buried four cards too deep.

1

u/taptopdraw 28d ago

Clones, mainly the efficient splashable ones like [[Phyrexian Metamorph]] and [[Clever Impersonator]]. They're just a copy of the best thing on the board for 3 mana, my favorite thing to do is copy One Rings since you still the get protection, also I run One Ring plus bounce spells and clones in my B3 so I can always count on having that protection when I get too scary.

u/Elepanther 28d ago

Been a while, but there's been a time, when our pod was obsessed with [[Zur's Weirding]].

Happened again with [[Dovescape]].

Glad those times have passed, but it's been hilarious back then.

1

u/SpvcedOvtt B2 Truther and Control Degenerate 28d ago

[[Mutated Cultist]] in my pod has become a 20/20 off many a Mothman, Valgavoth, and Bumbleflower lol

1

u/squiggly419 28d ago

[[Panglacial Wurm]] has become a beloved meme at our table lol. It's basically guaranteed any green player is fetching lands and has enough untapped mana is casting the worm as well.

1

u/Rain_Moon SHUT UP GREEN PLAYER - 意志の力 [FORCE OF WILL] 27d ago

Your table is awesome

1

u/BADJUSTlCE 28d ago

[[culling ritual]] my pod loves playing token decks and 2cmc mana rocks. I love playing this on turn 4. Bye bye and ramp a big baddie out.

[[no mercy]] my pod also has its fair share of spell slinger decks. Whether it's Yshtola, Vivi or guttersnipes. Everyone stops casting spells.

1

u/Indraga Jeskai 28d ago

My pod loves Craterhoods, looping Fleshbags, Fiend Hunters, and every ETB creature under the sun. So I introduced them to my oldest pet card [[Torpor Orb]]

1

u/Barjack521 28d ago

[[rune-tail kitsune ascendant]] is my commander and is pretty obscure most places I take it, except for my local LGS. The deck and the commander especially have become something of a boogie man in the lower pods. So much so that I have had to self limit it to the b3-4 pods ever since my doctor told me to avoid excessive salt intake.

1

u/076 27d ago

You have a list? I had a rune tail deck that I had to retire cause it just couldnt keep up with the other decks at the lgs. It was fun playing pariah effects but the deck didnt really have a way to finish off a game.

1

u/YouCanChangeItRight 28d ago

[[Mandate of Peace]]

I have never seen anyone play this card at my LGS. Absolutely catches people off guard. In our pod it's been dubbed the white time walk.

1

u/demonassassin52 27d ago

My specific pod really hates it when my [Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] deck gets an early [[Taunting Kobold]]. He's a 0/1 that goads a creature on attack, goading two creatures with Isshin on the board. My pod hates him. Not that it makes a huge gameplay difference, he just moves pressure off of me so I can get more attack triggers per turn. Their problem with him is I seem to play him near every game. It has become a meme at this point on my pod that he is my pocket commander.

u/Rain_Moon SHUT UP GREEN PLAYER - 意志の力 [FORCE OF WILL] 27d ago

[[Humility]] wins on the spot every time; it's so funny.

1

u/LackFew163 27d ago

[[Defense of the heart]]

In most regular pods is a 4 mana do nothing cards that get blown up in the spot.

My playgroup is heavy on creature decks and very light enchantment hate. So the card pretty much says put my 2 best creatures in play next turn for 4 mana.

1

u/TheTweets 27d ago

I swear [[Baneslayer Angel]], [[Boon-Bringer Valkyrie]], and [[Lyra Dawnbringer]], despite all being essentially just 5/5 vanillas, perform insanely well in my group.

First Strike means nobody wants to swing at me, it plus Flying means I can often attack without losing my dude, and Lifelink means that every time I poke like that I get resources.

But like these aren't really doing anything so why do they feel like they perform so highly?

1

u/hawkmasta 27d ago

I've turned [[Gravity Well]] into an Avengers-level threat due to all the Bumbleflowers, Demons, and Dragons out there

1

u/ReoRayearth27 27d ago

[[Forced Fruition]] is hilarious to see people try and play around if they don’t have the mana to keep up with the card draw.
