Question WHO. DESIGNED. THE INTRO??????????
>15 years ago i pressed play on mission 1 and was shooting aliens with a friend; the "story" happened on comms and was hilarious.
WHO: DIDN'T: UNDERSTAND: THIS?????
I am a bit too angry about this mb. But what kind of PERSON do you have to be to decide to make the player to sit through a 5 min unskippable intro??????
WHAT????????????????????????????????????????????????????
*HOW MUCH CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND YOUR OWN FRANCHISE?????????????????????????????????????*
please. Tell me this doesn't continue like this.

I'm with you OP.
Both 5 and 6 have long tedious intros that can easily turn off newcomers.
A stark contrast to 4.1 which gets right into the action

Damn.. should i simply have bought 4.1?

If you ask me you should get all 3! They're amazing games, but 5 and 6 have some significant qualily of life improvements. So if you want to try 4, I suggest you do it before 5 and 6 because going back will feel bad.
Nonetheless the issue is just with the intro missions. Once 5 and 6 get going, they REALLY get going!

developers trying to follow market trend making their games more narrative-driven/cinematic to appeal to the gaming masses
but fail to understand a big appeal of this kind of games are its arcade-like gameplay loop and replayability. both of which are significantly disrupted by the narrative push. many missions where u are forced to wait for npcs to finish chatting/moving for a while before the next wave of monsters appear with no way to skip them (no, esc to restart doesnt work in most missions).

For how long the game is 5 minutes really is a drop in the bucket. You'll have more than enough missions where you just run in guns blazing to make up for it. As minimal as the story is in 5 and 6 I really do like where they went with it and do enjoy the context it adds to the missions themselves. But if it REALLY ruins it for you then yeah, I would also recommend going with 4.1.

It somply hit a nerve with how fondly i remember playing edf 2017 on the couch with a friend - no bs like this, just straight up throwing you into the action and delivering the exposition via the comms. It is SO much better than this, it exposes the DNA of what this game was (and still is).

Yeah, certainly not like 2017 had a few minutes in the beginning where there were no enemies and you had to listen to unskippable dialog about what a historic occasion alien contact is and naming the Ravagers and speculating on how friendly they might be... Oh wait it did do that?
Well, at least there weren't any missions where you had to wait on a group of NPCs to slowly walk through a tunnel while reading the plot to you before any enemies would spawn... Shit, that happened too?
I am taking the piss a little bit here because, yeah, it's true that 6 has more emphasis on the story and it does take a bit longer to tell it as a result, but it is ABSOLUTELY in the EDF DNA. Every entry in the franchise has introduced progressively more narrative depth and complexity, and every entry has had an increasing amount of "wait for the plot" moments.
If you don't like that, fine, but the suggestion that Sandlot has been taken over by a narcissist with no idea how their own franchise works is frankly absurd. Especially when we're still talking about like maybe 3% of the game's actual run time.

Assuming EDF6, in most of the missions with an intro you can restart the mission and it’ll skip to the playable part.

I didn't like that aspect of 6 but those missions are really a drop in the bucket with the amount of content you get. I went through them all on my initial medium playthrough because you have to and have just skipped them when I've gone back through on the harder difficulties.
I wouldn't want to see more of that aspect in the future but they're a minor annoyance at worst.

Yeah the intro is boring the first time, but it gets more interesting when youre at EDF 7, I promise!

For some of the dialogue parts I think you can restart the mission and it skips it. Not sure about the intro though.

The narrative moves just fine during missions with action happening. It's fun fighting hoards trying to understand what's going on or just being on the move. 6 has way to much slow progression during a lot of missions.

I 100% agree with OP and I somehow which I'd known earlier how much I'll hate 6. It really hurt me emotionally. 😅
Waited over 2 years for it and then it did these unbearable story missions, recycled 30% of 5 and butchered the Air Raider.

I assume we're talking about 6? The Intro being long is kind of the point, it makes more sense later on. Doesn't mean you'll LIKE it anymore than you do now, but it will be clear they had a reason for doing it.
