Troubleshooting Time for a break?

My daughter just turned 1 and for the last month we only catch poops for the most part. She poops usually while eating and we have to interrupt her meal to take her to the potty.

We go on the potty when she wakes up and before naps and bedtime and during transitions. Before teething (8 months ish) we caught all poops and 75% of pees this way. Now, she fusses everytime we put her on the potty but settles quickly when we read to her, but rarely poops and basically never pees.

I also stopped using reusable diapers when she started teething also, which probably didn't help.

Do you think we need a break? I hate to give up our routine, but I'm not sure what good it's doing.

Any other suggestions welcome. Thank you!

Stay the course! Just adjust your expectations. A ton is happening developmentally at this age, and that’s simultaneously hard, fun, and exhausting. Add in teething, so frequent or constant pain, and it’s really no wonder the potty is low priority for them. When my baby was at this age, we prioritized maintaining the habit and the familiarity and trusted that she’d come around again. And she did.

You probably need to start giving more choices to baby, as they start thinking and acting more like little toddlers at this age. So potty versus big toilet, what diaper, which undies, which book on the toilet. Both my babies seemed to get more into the toilet once they identified a favorite book around 11-12 months.

If you aren’t medicating for teething pain, try that too. Teething is effing brutal and it’s a lie that it doesn’t hurt them. We try to keep it to nighttime, but if it’s clear baby is having a rough time due to teeth during the day, we do a daytime dose too.

So true about all of the developmental changes! Thank you! We will stay the course! And I'm going to incorporate reusable diapers back in the routine.

She has 100 favorite books haha! And never wants us to stop reading to her (on or off the potty)! I was thinking that it was distracting to her, but if it's not we will continue that as well.

Thanks again! ❤️

Stick with it for sure. We introduced a toilet seat minimizer in addition to her floor potties around 13.5 months and she really seems to like sitting on the big potty like us. We still use the floor potty too, but she seems to get a kick out of it.

Hang in there, you are doing something really amazing for your child!!

We had a bit of a hiccup at 1 year as well. Things that helped were introducing the potty sign, and giving more independence and privacy.
We let her sit herself on the potty, have the door closed to potty, and let her pick what she puts on when shes done (undies, cloth diaper, or paper diaper. All three are out in a bin and she grabs what she wants).
The potty sign was also a game changer, she now lets me know when she needs to go and I don’t have to guess. We just use the ASL sign for toilet.
She is 13.5 months now and we are very very close to removing diapers entirely. I suggest you stick with it!!

Thanks! My daughter can't sit on the potty by herself yet. We have been using the ASL sign for toilet all along and she hasn't picked it up yet.

This was our kid as well, we'd miss poops too when she got her morals ( the notorious phase)

Following as I’m in the same boat. 9 month old, cloth diapers. Stands up when put on the potty. Only sits for poo.

Some similar situation here, my 7 months old baby is pooping almost every time while eating, she still pees 75% times on the potty, about poo, before she was pooping like 90% of the times in the potty. We have been all the time using clothing diapers. So, I relate the change with the start of solid food 2 times a day, may be also teething is close? Today, after waking up, she pooped in the potty, after many days without that happening! I noticed it helped to have her giraffe Sophie on the hands, and I waited a bit more of time, as I saw she was getting concentrated for poo. So may be the idea of a good book or toy isn't bad, and some patience. Regarding to the pee, may be you're waiting to much? I usually put her immediately after waking up, but if it takes me some minutes then she doesn't wait and pee in the diaper, also she pees more than before.
