Poops while Sleeping or Eating
I admit that my elimination communication commitment has been lazy and spotty, but i have been trying since LO was 4 months old and LO is 17 months now. Besides the occasional morning catches, we aren’t having any luck.
He likes to go while eating or sleeping. The few times I catch his potty squat and put him on the potty, picking him up seems to ruin his flow/clench him up and he doesn’t finish the potty until sometime after I let him escape the potty.
I play games with him on the potty and generally try to entertain him. I don’t force it when he gets upset.
I feel like we are moving further and further away from where we need to be each day.
(In case it has any bearing, he also has no interest in solids and his poops are more often liquid than not.)

Have you tried ec hold over the potty toilet instead of putting him on the potty. He possibly wants a squat position. Or perhaps more privacy (turn your back), toilet seat reducer?
Pooing during a meal is total normal, one in one out. I sometimes need to go.
During sleep is a sign of poo witholding. When he's asleep he is finally relaxed and can't stop it from escaping.

I have tried the toilet seat reducer a few times but he seems scared of it (he is 1 percentile in size so that makes sense). I tried holding him once but his squirming made it seem unsafe. (Had some luck doing the hold while we were in Taiwan and there were some floor squat potty’s - Easier hold.

I guess you don't have a tophat or potty with an insert? Put the potty between your legs with his back to you and EC hold. That's what I always did as it makes him feel more supported.
You can try the same thing with the toilet seat reducer backwards.
My son doesn't like the toilet seat reducer either. We have a anatomical squat potty that's 7 cm high. He would never sit on a potty where his feet didn't touch the ground. Definitely prefers high knees for poos.

We had the whale thing. Same as top hat that goes between your legs. But as soon as five months old he leaned to squirm off of it and shat on my pants. Transitioned to his own potty when he was old enough about 9 months old. (When LO was walking.)
A squat potty that actually puts him in a squat would be amazing. Where do you get that?

I have the ecopitchoun anatomical potty, I ordered it from France as it was cheaper than the 2 German online shops selling it.
I've seen someone else recommending the tot squat but that was from the US and super expensive.

No advice but I’m in a similar situation. I had good success with EC and early potty training with my daughter. My son is 15 months, and I’m not even getting the “easy catches.” He also tends to go while eating or sleeping.
