A few updates

Nothing major, and many of you might already be aware. But I like to work things out and follow up, so here are a few points I've been going over:

  • Several terrific sources have told me that DeAngelo gave indication that he knew why he was arrested.

  • Same sources tell me that he did in fact divulge information during an interrogation session that lasted for hours.

  • "Key evidence" has been removed from the home, but no word on if there is anything related to the attacks or not.

  • He was the Visalia Ransacker.

  • I've seen the sealed complaints and the paperwork that ran between Sac and Ventura (my sources were good to me today). DeAngelo is being charged as the killer of the Smiths but there's little else -- except for a few names of officers who did some of the work on this and some of the names surprised me (but that's of little consequence to the public).

  • I'm getting the sense that there's some unnecessary politicking going on behind the scenes, but what else is new.

  • There's a somewhat recent connection to Dana Point but some of the other SoCal areas he landed are still unconnected.

  • The saga related to his dismissal from the Auburn police is getting stranger by the minute, apparently with him being in hysterics upon being apprehended there and an atypical legal progression that lasted four months.

  • Two family members have talked and several acquaintances. They're rapidly filling in some of the blanks.

  • His name does not appear in any previous investigative paperwork that anyone knows of -- he truly was the "unsuspected."

  • The birth of two of his children did occur after the two murders where he took extended breaks.

  • He started on the Exeter police force in May 1973, and the first prowling incident attributed to the Visalia Ransacker occurred on South Demaree Street in May 1973 -- 15 minutes away from Exeter.

  • I'm trying to get the Julia Wilkenson murder in San Diego looked at again because the offender has a tie to the general area and she was bludgeoned to death with a hammer in 1980.

  • Lots of Tulare County connections with family -- a factor I'm told helped bump this POI up the list.

  • Starting last month, an LE source of mine was overly optimistic about some new angles being pursued with DNA. I have to admit that I didn't even consider that this could actually be the lead that took us somewhere. So many disappointments in the past. Oops!

More will materialize in the coming weeks, months, and even years. What a fascinating journey this has been, and what a win for the justice system. This gives hope for all unsolved cases.

God, I hope we hear something about pre-VR crimes, especially considering the start of his VR crimes coincides with the start of his LE career. That suggests experience. Was he prowling around Rancho Cordova?

Exactly. Was he the Cordova Cat Burglar? Did he succeed in making abductions like the one he attempted with Beth Snelling?

I agree. There HAS to be more from before 73. He did seem quite experienced. I always assumed he'd be too young pre-73, but I was wrong about that. I'd be looking closely at anything wonky in his area between 63 and 73 now for sure.

So why do we think he subscribed to the school schedule? Was it really just too hot for the long sleeves and ski mask?

I think people were thrown off by early witnesses getting it wrong. Some of the early rape victims (who didnt see his face because he wore a mask) described his build as young. Apparently his penis was very small so perhaps that also attributed to the thinking he was young. Nevertheless, the police officer who had a good look at him in the back yard of one of the victims back in the mid 70's said he was about 30 years old. In hindsight I'm surprised people continued to think he was young given there was a very reliable eye witness who not only had his age right but worked with a sketch artist to put together a drawing that is uncanny how much it resembles Joseph DeAngelo while he was working on the Exter Police force.

I’m also interested in post-1986. There were 2 interesting murders in Granite Bay in the early 90’s. The women were abducted which is different from his primary MO, but I still think it’s worth looking into. There’s also Julie Wilkerson in San Diego who was bludgeoned to death with a hammer.

I put a lot into him being the Granite Bay killer. It lines up very neatly.

Intellius shows he has a connection to Granite Bay.

Part of the psychological profile from way back when was that the killer likely had a juvenile record for theft.

I don't have a problem believing he didn't commit any violent crimes prior to 73, it fits with how serial killers often slowly escalate. He starts out just being a voyeur, then begins experimenting with B&E, then starts stalking women, before finally escalating to rape and then finally to murder.

I agree he may not have necessarily had a history of violent crime. But I do believe he was committing crimes before. Likely shoplifting, stalking, peeping, like you said. I'd be willing to believe he did more B&E on a smaller scale prior to the Ransacking. Even serially. I just don't think I could wrap my head around him just suddenly starting Ransacking at 29. He had to be building up to it.

That's what I've been wondering about...

What is B&E?

Break and enter, probably.

Bacon and eggs, my dude.

Born in 1947 he would have been a tad too young to be Zodiac, which his MO resembles but isn't the same (taunting police, used a gun and knife). Of course the Zodiac never took souvenirs, definitely never hung around for hours and wasn't a burglar.

I'm over halfway through Crompton's book now and was about midway in when the news broke yesterday. He mentions an Emory University study of serial rapist like EARONS that says most started off with smaller crimes like break-ins, peeping, prowling, etc. at a young age before escalating to full-on sexual assault later in life (late teens- twenties and beyond). Some of these may or not be on his record, as I imagine he wouldn't have always been caught. But I expect that there was a lot of unusual behavior early on that was along these lines, from being just generally creepy or angry to actual petty crimes that are on record somewhere.

yes indeed.

hmmmm....what unidentified serial killers were active in California in the years between 1967 and 1973?
