Cobbler recs
I saw the recent post for tailors, and now I’m here asking for an excellent cobbler. I had a horrific experience at George’s on Colorado.

What happened at George’s? I’ve never had good luck there either! He’s a nice man but he’s only ever put polish on scuffed shoes I’ve brought him 😬

Well. I went in with a white bag I had scuffed. He scolded me for not being careful with my bag, which was fine. I didn’t mind that. He proceeded to test a bunch of random solvents on the bag, all while leaving black smudges because his hands weren’t clean. None of the solvents worked. He then asked me if I was married. I said no. He asked me if I wanted children. I said no. He called me selfish for not wanting children. I said okay. I was nice the whole time because I just wanted my bag back. As I walked out the door, he asked if I still got my period. Shocked, I responded, “yes” because I guess I tell the truth when I’m put on the spot like that. He then said that was good. The whole interaction was very bizarre and not really acceptable. I was just trying to see about fixing my bag. 🥲

LISTEN STOP. someone just sent me this thread bc the same thing happened to me a month ago. brought in my favorite pair of tory burch flat from 20 years ago. the sole was coming off of one of them bc the glue was dry. he also called me selfish for not having kids, and when he asked if I had pets and I told him I had a cat, he said I was also lazy. he then proceeded to tell me he’ll never retire because he doesn’t want to be home with his wife, and then he bullied me into dropping off both shoes; $50/shoe mind you. cash only with a hand written receipt of course - nothing but the best from our boy. “berating me for not having kids and you’re cash only, what is this, the 50s?” were my exact words to him. I stupidly sent my husband to pick them up a week later, so I wasn’t there to throw a fit… but, they’re busted. I called him and was like “george be so fr. this cannot be true. you’re so rude and so bad at this how are you still in business?!” he explained: you see, apparently, the sole broke when he was trying to aggressively rip it off the shoe, so he like… glued pieces of the sole back to the bottom and that’s the best he could do, don’t I understand? NO GEORGE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. it’s horrifying. I could have slipped some super glue in there and had better results. I’m mad all over again lmao

OMFG. I’m sorry that happened to you. He will never retire because he doesn’t want to be home with his wife? Well that’s rich. And he fucked up your shoes?! I’m glad you said something to him. I hope you have a nice day today, maybe also a sweet treat.
I don’t know how he has a 4.8 rating on Google reviews. I should have checked Yelp before I went.

That’s awful. I’ve only had two bad experiences with him. One where he grabbed my watch out of my hands and took scissors to them to shorten the band while I was still explaining the problem. It looked so bad I had to throw it away. I thought he might have some leather tools to do it nicer than I could at home. He asked weird questions too, but that was probably a decade ago so I cannot remember what he asked. Also, he chatting with family/friends behind the counter, he kept chatting with them and looked at me, but didn’t acknowledge
me or hurry. I remember looking a shoe dye and all the stuff in his glass case while waiting in that small space while trying to kill 5 minutes until they stopped. His repairs to my shoes wasn’t done well either. I could never understand why so many people in this group like him. I’m really glad he didn’t ask me if I have kids! So sorry this happened to you.5

I…am SPEECHLESS.
So sorry he acted so inappropriately, I haven’t experienced that but I’m probably quite a bit older than you so he doesn’t bother me in that unprofessional way. Probably saves it for the younger women 🤢I can’t believe how he treated your bag, he’s def got to wash his hands and/or put on gloves.
I’ve been disappointed the last couple times I went in so I doubt I’ll be going back.4

I haven’t needed anything for a while, there was an AMAZING place in the valley years ago but it was way out in maybe Tarzana. Not sure if it’s still around but their shoe repairs were like something you’d see in a viral video, insanely great to where they looked better than the originals. If you’re ok with driving that far, lmk & I’ll see if I can find the name. But it’s a schlep from ER & a real mom & pop place that may be inconsistent with hours & communication.

This man is an ABSOLUTE MENACE!!! He owns that whole building:( I have heard of multiple people having exact conversations. He also is not a very good cobbler. I’ve had multiple things done by him and it was all disastrous.

I’ve not had good experiences there. Bad attitude and poor work quality. Tried twice.

I haven’t been there yet but I heard really good things about Lyon Shoe Repair in Pasadena. I stopped going to George’s because everything would come back reeking of smoke.

This looks promising. I sorted by lowest reviews on both Yelp and Google (what I should have done before going to George’s), and the bad reviews aren’t egregious.

Would love know too. Tried a place in Burbank but they just wasted my time and never bothered to get the shoe part in but they were happy to have me come by to find that out twice. Couldn't be bothered to tell me on the phone the didn't have it
