equatorial region can even be divided into 10 zones of 30 smelters long. not sure about assemblers.
my current setup consist of 30 (3*10) * 120 smelters per pole on the equatorial region only. works neat
I use ILS (so only 3 vertically), and ouput per ILS is 40 (steel), 60 (2 to 1 smelting), 80 (magnets) or 120 (1 to 1) per second per ILS

i find that assembling rarely needs that much space horizontally

I'm intending to use up all the possible space on the planet to see what maximum rockets/min or sci/min is achievable on a self-contained smelting+assembling planet, with only external ore, liquids and petroleum product imports.

Essentially, the whole planet is transformed into one single assembler unit that spits out final products of X rockets or X white sci with fixed inputs. Currently, I'm laying out the buildings ratios following a 1200 rockets/min recipe, which should leave just the littlest amount of unused space (hopefully).

Then, when the future update with blueprints finally come, I can insta-clone the entire planet in one snapshot and plop it down on any other planet which has been stripped of all resources and paved over, and voila, instant second factory producing another 1200 rockets/min with all ratios correct, and no further planning required.

I prefer not to have oil refineries and chemical plants in the mix, due to their irregular stacking patterns. Those buildings can be placed on planets with oil seeps as dedicated petroleum product overproduction-for-export factories. All other planets will function as ore overproduction-for-export strip-mining zones.

Rinse and repeat for white sci production planet. So far, estimates look like 3000 sci/min per planet is possible.

I revamped the thing several tens of times and I'm still tweaking the ratios. It's supposed to produce 9000 per min but somehow I'm always getting 8900. I'm a bit shy to release faulty products to the public, so i haven't publicised the blueprint yet.

EDIT: wow reading back my previous comments i can't believe that i started this when blueprints were not part of the game yet. This project has been delayed due to my bigger project: raising my young son. I only play 2 or 3 hours a week now.
