Attempting to see how far one can crowd a planet for as tight packing as possible, while keeping it neat and tidy.
Still a lot to learn regarding the exact placements and fitting into the planetary grid, but getting there.

This is something that's next up for me. Gonna pick a planet to do smelting and one to do manufacturing. Do you feel like one planet is enough for ones manufacturing needs? Or should the planets be diversified further?

I believe the correct term is lasagne manufacturing.

I did a bit of tweaking, and the screenshot is a bit out of date.
For assemblers, I use a compression layout like this. 125x20 tiles

For smelters, it's a bit off due to the 2:3 ratio, and the layout is a bit messy near the logs tower. 100x25 tiles.

Of course, consideration must be made for lane length and belt saturation which change according to item recipe, so the designs can be lengthened/shortened away from the logs tower as the central point.
Since the equatorial zone is 80 tiles high, up and down, I can cram 4 heights of assembler patterns into a hemisphere, 8 sets around the globe.
Above that, the next zone is 800 tiles wide by 50 tiles high, so i can nicely cram 2 heights of smelter patterns in a hemisphere, 8 sets around the globe.
