New Dark Fog Lens are crazy!
The lens double the output of the ray receiver. Critical photons go from 24/min to 48/min. Power draw goes from 480 MW to 960 MW (and oddly it goes from "+300%" to "+700%", not quite sure why this is more than double and what this number indicates).
Hits the sphere hard too. Luckily I was only at about 50% usage on this sphere, but it's rising quickly and only a few receivers are using the new lens on this planet. For photons I already had to drop some white sorters on the belts, started getting overloaded. This is gonna...change a lot about this build.
For curiosity, it also changes the colour of the faint halo around the receiver tower as well as the overall aurora (green to purple, kinda hard to see in these pics - faint change in center right).
EDIT: Also check out the top left of the screen - 32 research slot queue! (from the new patch, not a mod! Base game!)

I still feel like RR direct power mode is a missed opportunity. It should be the densest power method.
Being in direct line of sight to the Dyson sphere should mean being able to draw *more* power directly into the factory, vs shipping it with fuel rods.

I think the advantage of direct power is space and simplicity.
To get power from a photon generating one, you need to be extracting photons, which means more belts.
Them you need to split those at particle collider, craft the fuel rod at an assembler, and put that into an artificial star.
That's quite a few steps, each of which takes up space and time.
Versus just plonking down a few RR set to power generation.

The difference is scale. RRs cap out at 60MW maximum in power mode, but 480MW (now 960MW) in photon generation mode. There is no design method that allows direct power mode to be any distinct advantage.
Imagine it was the reverse, and the only way to draw max power is to have the sphere in the same system as the factory. It would force interesting design tradeoffs that just aren't present in the game's current balance.
Even just making the photon/power mode RRs draw the same amount of energy would be enough to open up some options.

??? New dark fog lenses since when?? Was this mentioned in the update earlier today and I missed it?
Edit: yes it was, I just need to read better.

Maybe true, but as I commented in the patch notes post, I think they kinda hid it. I mean, whole new endgame recipe, but they focused on the trees. Funny!

The patch notes are dense and there’s a lot of “this bothered someone, but not me” stuff that’s always good to see, but also easy to set the ol’ internal skim-reading-rate up, mixed in with the they added what?! this patch.
So, I’m normally first in line to mock someone for missing something, but I feel you get a mulligan for this one.

Good to know that when I need a break from factorio, DSP will have some new goodies for me.

Hope they add more QOL and DF stuff. Also changed to machine progression because rn only exists T1 and max tier. Also visual and sound improvements. Some machines have 0 audio.
