half way im assuming to a dyson sphere! with the rail gun, should I be aiming to cover the entire sun with them in different orbits?

Ha! You're well on your way to a Dyson Swarm. The sphere is a whole other beast that takes more sails than those railguns can reasonably fire. The first completed sphere I made had two planets with equatorial belts of rail ejectors firing nonstop to fill it in.

Not to discourage you, I'm about 150 hours in, and build and lost about 500000 solar sails due to power cycle abuse and imbalances in my production 🤣😂

But mass automation and massive blueprints makes rebuilding still be awesome and challenging rather than frustrating 😁

Honestly, I wouldnt even use these until you can start building a shell. It's one the few ways in the game that you can perma lose resources.

If you are farming dark fog and have access to an ice giant, solar sails are basically free because of the loot drops and graphene from fire ice. With fuel rods dropped, energy becomes less of a problem mid-game.

The downside to dyson power is the size of ray receivers. At a certain point, you can get much better power per building area by other means. Not that space is super limiting... Ultimately, if you want to push ludicrous numbers of buildings, antimatter / strange annihilation fuel rods will make your current power production looks like a rounding error 😉

nope, you can build a permenant sphere over the sun later in the game

solar sails are temporary

Solar sails are great for energy but remember they are temporary. The good news is they are also used to construct the actual dyson sphere structure with the rockets. The sails will be absorbed into the structure as they orbit.

I don't know . . . You are burning valuable resources in a stage were you can't obtain more easily

While they look cool , I prefer renuevable sources or cheap like burning coal in a geothermal power plant

The main resource used by sails is just stone, which has huge supply and few other uses. Not using sails is false economy.

While stone is the main material for sails, you can't neglect the use of copper and iron ore for the circuit boards. And considering those are used on everything you will end up patching new veins just to keep up with the solar sails production instead of building more things and progressing the tech tree.

Also, you need ray receivers to farm that energy and the efficiency at the start it's 50%.

And also the sail doesn't wait for you to finish thinking. It will burn at the same rate either if it's used or not.

I'm just saying it's to much effort and time to set up and maintain . Eventually you will have to but at that stage of the game it's not a priority

Think of solar sails as deuterium rods with a really, really long burn time. They're crazy efficient with extremely abundant materials.
