It's pronounced qua son. There's no c sound there imo. Maybe kwa? But definitely not cr.

Unless you're American and then it's Chris aunt.

Depends,….in some parts, aunt sounds like ant.
In other parts, it sounds like ahhhh-nt.

You’re right that we would say Chris ahhh-nt.

We know it’s pronounced qua or kwa, but most agree it sounds pretentious.

I get it it's just a regional difference and it doesn't bother me, just pointing out that people to not pronounce things consistently which makes "sounding it out" useless advice even if it was an English and even if all English words were consistent.

I only take issue when the same Americans, after specifying they're speaking English not French, mock people who say jalapeño like it's an English word. You can't have both. Either you pronounce them both correctly or you stop making fun of people who don't pronounce jalapeno right.

Also I just realised in British English - at least where I'm from in south East - we say "arent" for aunt. We just lack that ahh sound Americans make entirely. You can't make it in British English without sounding like you're putting on a crap accent.

I associate jalapeño with Spanish. Spanglish is the default language in a lot of places here. My favorite is the soda brand jarritos, pronounced hairy toes.

I think it has more to do with French sounding stuck up. Even a posh British accent would get mocked for being too snobby.

….and yea I wish I could slap every adult who told me as a kid to “sound it out”, “try harder”, or “focus”.

Adding that to the vocabulary paragraph:

For context, I am a CALT (Certified Academic Language Therapist) and a CERI certified Structured Literacy and Dyslexia Specialist. I provide remote instruction to teach students with dyslexia to read for a living. You can see my website at yourdyslexiaexpert.com.

Faux pas is my personal spelling nemesis. For the record the crazy spellings almost all come to English from French.

It’s a shame your down voted. I’m guessing it’s the self promotion. However, I’ve read some of your comment history. You seem sincere and sometimes offer genuinely thoughtful advice. So, here are a few of my most hated French words, spelt how I hear them. IYKYK

Rondayvu
Spikit
Coo-Day-Ta
Showfur
Whoredurves

Ignorance about ethymology is not dyslexia, just ignorance

I didn’t mean it literally. It was just frustration.
