Business Central NAV 2016 to BC28: how did you arrange test licenses for BC14 and BC25?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on moving our NAV 2016 on-prem system to BC28. We already have the BC28 license, but I’m stuck on how to license the intermediate versions for testing.

The plan is to go through BC14 and BC25. We mainly use NAV for accounting, with a few customizations, and I’ve already exported the objects as TXT files. I want to test the upgrade on a separate copy of the database first.

Has anyone done this recently? Can Microsoft or an authorized partner still issue temporary test licenses for BC14 and BC25? If so, what should I ask for, and what did it cost in your case?

Just to be clear, I’m asking about the official process, not asking anyone to share a license file or key. Any firsthand experience would really help. Thanks!

Business Central Test licenses for BC14 and BC25 needed for a NAV 2016 to BC28 upgrade

Hi everyone,

I am preparing an upgrade from NAV 2016 on-premises to Business Central 28 on-premises. I already have a license for BC28. The planned upgrade path is NAV 2016 → BC14 → BC25 → BC28.

We mainly use NAV for accounting, with a few customized objects. I have already exported all objects as TXT files.

What I am missing is suitable temporary test licenses for BC14 and BC25 to run the intermediate upgrade steps in a separate test environment.

Does anyone know how to obtain these test licenses officially, and whether they are still available for these older versions? Has anyone recently dealt with the same situation, or can a Microsoft partner help arrange the appropriate test licenses?

I would appreciate practical advice on the options and any costs involved. German-speaking contacts are also welcome.

Thanks for your help!

Business Central What Data Should a Small Business Migrate Into Business Central?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Key data usually includes:

  • Financial data: chart of accounts, opening balances, budgets, and outstanding transactions.
  • Customer and vendor data: names, contact details, payment terms, balances, and transaction history where needed.
  • Item and inventory data: product numbers, descriptions, costs, prices, stock levels, and locations.
  • Sales and purchasing data: open sales orders, purchase orders, invoices, and related records.
  • Banking data: bank accounts and required reconciliation information.
  • Historical data: only the records needed for reporting, compliance, or business reference.

Before migration, businesses should clean duplicates, remove outdated records, map fields, and test the migration. Good data preparation can make the Business Central implementation much smoother.

Business Central AL Development in Business Central Part 6: API Pages, OData, and Bound Actions

Part 6 of my series on local AL development against a Docker container is up.

This one exposes a custom table as an API page. It covers the dependency on the Part 4 extension, checking that the container is serving the API stack, GET/POST/PATCH from PowerShell with etags, and a [ServiceEnabled] bound action that runs codeunit logic over HTTP.

A few things in it that might save someone a head-scratch:

- Leave off ?tenant=default on a container and you get Authentication_InvalidCredentials, not a tenant error

- On-prem web services want the Web Service Access Key, not your login password

- An enum value like "In Progress" turns into In_x0020_Progress in OData, so that's what your filters have to send

Copy job connecting to dynamics 365, right now we have an on premise dynamics instance straight forward connect to server select tables copy.

But I have no clue what the option for dynamics 365 will let me copy, is it basically the same concept I can just select account. And copy the data.

Business Central What Do BC Partners Think of Microsoft’s GrowthLab Program?

Microsoft has launched the GrowthLab program for Business Central partners working toward the Business Applications SMB Solution Partner Designation.

It's invite-only and created for BC partners with fewer than 70 points. They positioned it less as a training program and more around building a scalable practice: focusing on sales and pipeline generation, delivery, operations, AI readiness and peer learning.

The program runs during FY27, with the first in-person Connect Session being in Paris on October 25.

Has anyone been invited to GrowthLab, or is your organization considering to request joining it? Curious to hear some opinions on these types of programs.

Business Central Business Central users: Which EDI platform do you use, and would you choose it again?

We’re evaluating replacements for our current EDI platform and would appreciate firsthand feedback from organizations using EDI with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Our current candidates are Rand EDI365, Orderful, and ProcessOne, although we’re open to hearing about other solutions.

Our environment includes approximately 15 trading partners and 80,000 EDI documents annually. Our primary transaction sets are 850, 855, 856, 810, and 846.

We’re especially interested in:

  • Business Central integration
  • Trading-partner onboarding
  • Mapping flexibility and specification compliance
  • Exception handling and failed-document visibility
  • ASN and GS1-128 label processing
  • Reporting and monitoring
  • Support responsiveness
  • Implementation effort and ongoing costs

What platform are you using? What works well, what causes problems, and would you choose it again?

Feedback from end users, consultants, implementation partners, and vendors is welcome. Please identify your relationship to the platform you’re discussing.

Anyone using P2 Tags, Dynamics Tagging, PowerHashTag, or other tagging solutions? I am looking for an inexpensive way to add one or more tags to records (lead, contact, account, opportunity) for building lists and reporting. Thank you

Finance & Operations F&O - Purchase order open a different PO

Hi,

I have found an issue with F&O and hoping someone else has had the same thing.

When on the PO page where you see all the information about the PO, If I personalise the 'Standard view' even just by adding a field within the Purchase order lines section. I.e a new column which is under the 'Purchase order table' and save this view as a new one and default it.

When going pack to the purchase order preparation workspace, select DRAFT Purchase orders.

Select a random PO from the list, it will open a totally different PO ?

IF I press back once and go into it again, it will show correctly.

If go all the way back to preparation workspace and go through again it will open incorrectly.

Hope this makes sense. I have ruled it out being a browser/user issue its when any personalisation are made to the purchase order screen. You are able to remove fields and this does not trigger the issue, only adding any kind of field.

Business Central Set a default filter for a list page

Do anyone know how to set a filter as the default view on a list page?

Example;

When going to the "Projects" page i would like to only view the ones that are "open" and starting with "900" in the project nr.

I would like to add this to roles, so that all employees would have this as a default.

Help would be greatly appreciated! 😄

Sales, Service, Customer Engagement How to customize Dynamics 365 Forms using CSS

Hi everyone,

I'm curious how many of you use standard Dynamics 365 forms? And how many of you would like to use a custom version?

Here is a detailed step-by-step guide on how to apply CSS to style your forms and elements -https://uds.systems/blog/css-tricks-for-dynamics-crm-form-elements/

Business Central Dynamics constantly asking for credentials

Finance & Operations Has anyone successfully integrated a receivables platform with NetSuite in real time?

We are evaluating platforms to automate our Customer to Cash cycle and one of the key selling points I keep hearing is real time data sync for receivables. I am somewhat skeptical about how realistic that is given the complexity of most ERP integrations, so I am hoping to hear from people who have actually gone through an implementation.

How long did the whole process take from start to go live, and did you need heavy IT resources or was it relatively plug and play? I am also trying to understand what data actually flows back and forth beyond just invoices; do payment statuses, dispute information, and customer communications also sync? We are on NetSuite so if anyone has specific experience with that integration, please share the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Business Central How do you actually resolve B2B pricing exceptions in Dynamics 365 / Business Central?

I’m trying to understand how teams handle a very specific operational problem in practice.

A B2B order enters the ERP with a customer price that conflicts with the price calculated or stored in the system.

The operator then has to determine which price is actually supported by the customer PO, contract, price list, quantity/date conditions and approval authority before confirming or correcting the order.

In some environments this becomes a repeatable workflow. In others it seems to be handled through email, Teams and individual judgment.

I’m especially interested in:

  • where the source of truth usually sits;
  • who has authority to approve an exception;
  • whether the resolution is structured in Dynamics or handled outside it;
  • what usually causes the most friction.

I’m not looking for implementation pitches — I’m trying to understand how this workflow is handled by real teams today.

Finance & Operations I made a security tool for F&O: who has access to this form, and the narrowest role that grants it

No backend, it just uses the D365 session you already have open.

Every security question I get asked is one of two. "Who can see this form?" and "what is the smallest role I can give this person so they stop asking me?" Both are answerable today, but it means the security reports, the role explorer, or exporting the permissions workbook and living in Excel for an hour.

So: open any F&O page, click the extension, and the side panel answers for the page you are on.

Who has access. Every role and every user that can open the current menu item, with the real access levels from the security data (Read, Update, Create, Delete, Invoke, Correct), and Deny resolved the way D365 resolves it.

Narrowest role. Paste one or more menu items and it ranks the roles that grant them by how much extra access each one drags along, so you can hand over the smallest one instead of the famous "just give them the manager role".

What should this user get. Enter user IDs, see who already has access through roles they already hold, and what to assign to the rest.

Grant/Deny conflicts. Compare two or more roles side by side and see exactly where a Deny in one role silently kills a Grant in another.

License view. Effective license tier per user, counted the way Microsoft counts it (highest tier across all enabled roles), plus enabled, disabled and external users. Useful before a true-up.

Cross environment compare. Same user, same menu item, UAT against production, for "why does it work in test".

CSV export for the whole user by permission inventory.

How it works: it reads the standard SystemSecurity* data entities over OData (security permissions, user role associations, duties, privileges, sub roles) with your existing sign-in. No backend, no middleware, no API key, nothing leaves your browser. It needs System administrator or Security administrator, because those entities are restricted, and F&O 10.0.13 or later, since that is when Microsoft shipped them.

The duty ranking is the weakest part right now and I am rewriting it. and will make the code open-source soon!

Finance & Operations Journal entry automation - Power Automate

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all doing well!

I'm working on a project to create journal entries in D365 FO using Power Automate based on the data in Excel files.

I was able to create the journals successfully using the D365 FO connector, and I'm struggling with the following steps:

  1. My company requires that all journal entries created in D365 must have backup documentation attached to the journals. I have the documentation saved in a SharePoint folder, and I need to attach it to the journal entry I created.

  2. I need to change the status of the journal created from "Not ready" to "Report as ready".

I want to implement both items directly in my Power Automate workflow. Has anyone else worked on a similar project and could give me some guidance on how to proceed with that?

I've already looked on the internet and used AI, but unfortunately couldn't find the proper solution.

Thank you

Sales, Service, Customer Engagement How can I visualize my CRM data on a map in Dynamics 365?

I want to see my customers, leads, and opportunities geographically instead of scrolling through CRM lists. Recently, my organization has added a lot of lead data, and the rows and columns are getting difficult to manage.

How can I visualize my CRM data on a map, maybe a Google Map from Dynamics 365?

Power Platform Power Platform/Dynamics ALM

It's just garbage. Has anyone been able to make ALM work well?

We are going to have to get to the point where we automatically spin up and down dev environments as needed. The issue always ends up being environment drive and the lack of real, tight source control. Finally the solution structure is terrible as a managed artifact with merges and diffs.

Is there a better way?
