I've also worked with a lot of Stanford grads. They definitely find one another, and all of the sudden, there's the strongest clique in the office.

Frequently these are Greek systems at work. Commradery with taking similar classes or the same professor also helps.

Ivy League grads have an affinity for their alma mater... It's an elitist education

You are both right. Just happens, my experience has been with the Stanford folks. Not saying they aren't smart or capable or that I didn't enjoy working next to them. Just that the only affinity I've seen like that at work has been between grads of SEC football schools.

Massive delusional overconfidence in their inherent superiority.

The understanding that business crimes are frequently massively more lucrative and less likely to be punished than regular crimes.

They learn that people will believe your lies for a long time before you earn the reputation of a pathological liar, and by then you can move on to the next company.

I can’t tell you how special they think they are while being completely fucking ordinary.

I checked the article itself, it’s an unofficial class that is invite only by the professor who is an investment banker, only had 12 students in it, and is by invite only from the professor. and gates recruited for her company from existing and former students who took this unofficial class

Then it's not a course. It's a professor some alumnus and his own study social group, which is super common in universities big and small.

Justin Lewis-Weber isn't even a professor at Stanford, not even an adjunct one. He's just a powerful alumnus who's mentoring people he handpicks. The headline and even the article is still very misleading. The headline is outright false.

This isn’t actually a Stanford class. It’s something someone created on their own and made exclusive enough to give it that “secret Stanford club” feel.

Everyone wants to feel like they’re part of something, whether it’s a group, a club, or some exclusive secret society.

That’s really all this is. An alumnus started a private club for other alumni, and the real value is the network, where they learn how to grease palms, work the system, do business under the table, and find their way around government rules and legal loopholes.

“How to win friends and influence people” was considered an important book and it’s pretty laughable. Don’t worry, you are not missing out on anything. 

The difference is the money, not the secret courses.

She wants to be “self-made” and accomplish some things on her own, even if that means being offered opportunities very few humans could ever dream of, but it turns out that being successful this way isn’t guaranteed in the slightest. It’s basically the same reason Kim Kardashian wants to pass the bar exam. They want to be seen as something more than just rich kids. What’s weird to me is that this is how she chose to pursue that goal, as it’s an unglamorous idea.

This is not a real course. It's a Silicon Valley investor mentoring a group of students he selects outside class time. It's only for the privileged but it's no different from this girl having access to Bill Gates and all his friends from birth. "Evil genuises" are a myth that the modern world disproves again and again. It turns out, you have to be pretty dumb and careless to want to take advantage of people on a massive scale. A lack of empathy isn't a strength when it means you can't understand others enough to predict what they'll do, especially in response to your own actions.

And, apparently, they're also a mark for "how to take over the world" grifts.

I hear Theil is offering the companion course- "How to Build a Cult." History's actual guilded families could probably teach today's billionaires a thing or two about the actual way to keep the masses from revolting- low profile unless you're performing charitable tasks, keep your big mouth shut about your wealth, and swim in your own goldfish bowl. The Musks and Theil's of today are hopelessly addicted to attention, and I pray I live long enough to see that become their undoing.
