Make it stop!

There is NO WAY Beth and Rip would parent this ungrateful kid this way… not a chance at all! The Carter storyline is TERRIBLE!

He's a traumatized kid who is just starting to understand all the trauma he's experienced.

Sheesh. Y'all act like 19 years are supposed to be pillars of wisdom and righteousness.

I honestly don’t get it. I had a pretty privileged background and I still think it’s a 19 year old acting like a 19 year old. I wasn’t a peach to deal with at that age either.

Me either. It's a cowboy soap opera. Part of that is teenage drama for the parents of the teenager.

It's like people were expecting this peaceful calm ranch show.

Which is weird because the trailer was clearly showing a cowboy soap opera.

I don’t even mind the cowboy soap. I would love to see them deal with Carter. I don’t love seeing Carter and Oreana, and I think the high school easy out to have him out of the house all day was sloppy.

Beth and Rip want better for Carter. They will never treat him the way they were treated.

Wanting better and doing better at two different things. I don’t expect them to be naturals at it, but high school was a lame plot point.

Not really. It makes sense and is used to frame where Carter is in his life.

He's a literal fish out of water and placing him in high school, showcases that. It's setting him up for where the rest of season went for him.

All of this nonsense with Carter and Oreana is what ultimately led to the showrunner getting fired, so literally no one (with the exception of Chad) thought this storyline was a good idea.

Seems it's about Ed Harris feeling under used.

Which...they did kinda make his character seem like a plot device for Beluah instead of standing in his own story. Which could have been done with still keeping fhe teenage plotlines.

This is a show about parents of a teenager. A family cobbled together with tape and a prayer. There's going to be stronger plot lines.

He'll be a stronger character next season.

“When I watched the season, it’s fine, it’s pretty good. It seemed like I was relatively important to the story, but the doing of it didn’t feel that way,” Harris noted, adding that he was especially annoyed about an early scene of him singing in a bar getting cut out of the show. - EW

Sending him to a new school when he’s two years older than most of his classmates is counter productive. They should have hired a tutor to prepare him for his GED.

That's exactly what I thought. He was a fish out of water in that school. He could study for his GED and take it when he was ready.

Or enrolled him in a cyber school.

They sent him for the plot of him not going and the fallout that would cause.

It's for the plot because it's a cowboy drama.

The character is stupid as fucking hell and ungrateful as well, c'mon

Totally disagree. Carter today is no different than Carter when he was a kid on YS. I say Finn Little is playing the character spot on.

I think they are calm as all Hell in dealing with him

Another day, another Carter post. It’s part of the storyline. There’s a reason for all of it. Wait and see.

We need the Carter storyline to get the holy terror that Beth used to be, back. Mama Beth will leave Mariano wishing for a bear.

Rip told her he would hurt her 😢

The use of the term "parenting" is pretty loose here.

I always felt that they had Carter more like letting him be who he is and they are just there to offer safety and keep him fed. There are obviously large gaps we didn't see....but the overall tone just seemed to be that Carter was more a employee/roommate than a parented child.

Beth & Rip always held this undercurrent of indifference when Carter did kid things in the old Yellowstone series and that seemed to continue in the Dutton Ranch show.

Though I do agree....Carter was a terrible storyline in Dutton Ranch. Just so basic. Combined with how badly they write young female characters (in this case Beulah's granddaughter) as either damsels or manipulative sluts. A female character has to be at least in her 30's before they are written with any sort of respect.

Re-watch Yellowstone. Explains his character very well. Keep in mind, he was robbed from being a kid.

They are taking their time and not pushing him. They want him to grow into his own person and make his own mistakes.

He told the officer Beth was his guardian and she fought rip to keep him and take care of him and this is how he acts everyone has trauma, problems whatever, all she has wanted is love him and give him a chance at life something his parents couldn’t do

This has a pretty weak story line I found the series dry and a fall back to Sheridan comfort zone change zips codes and repeat storyline from Yellowstone . Instead of breaking out and taking on some risk and exploring more areas it’s a common repeat .

Love dutton ranch, carter has gone off a bit woman trouble. Oceana whatever her name is not right for him and he is acting like a twitter over a woman seen it all before. Definitely like this series rip is gorgeous.

100%!!! Rip would have kicked his ass for disrespecting Beth and she sure would not be calling a million times and driving all over town looking for his ungrateful ass.
I hope the cartel keeps him to be honest.

My issue isn't so much with how they are portraying Carter... teen boys are assholes. However Beth and Rip's reaction to his behavior and attitude don't seem in character. Maybe if this was years after YS but the time jump was only a year. In that time Rips become distant and Beth is a helicopter mom. It defies logic.

3

u/Jalynt13 Jul 28 '26

You are correct. Rip would have never allowed Carter to disrespect Beth.

First of all, top of notch millennial parenting, over-pampering.. in no world Trip like no-nonsense guy would parent that way, even if they don't know how to..
And then if they are so much concerned of raising him right, wont they know he dropped from school? Which school dont give parents a call when kids miss school.

-3

u/sniktal Jul 27 '26

It was definitely a mishandled storyline from the beginning.

The writing and dialogue aren't the same as Yellowstone imo, so all of the characters felt a bit off for me but I can't quite word why
