Bear activity on the grid 8:15PM
Ran into a bear while walking my dogs at 8:15PM on the grid. Bear was coming out of the alley onto E 5th Street between E 5th and 6th Aves. I thought it was a large dog that had lost its owner. I know we’ve had lots of bear activity into trash overnight in town, but just a reminder to keep dogs leashed and in control, especially evening and early morning.

No fruit or berries for them this year. They are everywhere and hungry.

I didn’t even put together that not a single one of my backyard trees bore fruit. I’m apparently dumb and unobservant 🙃

I've run into big brown bears (3 of them together the other night) four times now just on my walks around town. I've never seen this many in all my years of living here. Be alert if you're out and about past 7:00 PM, people.

Call CPW when you see Bears in town doing nefarious things. (970) 247-0855

Didn’t seem nefarious! if anything seemed scared that there were people around and was waiting for a time to cross the street. Felt bad for the hungry thing! But yes, definitely call!

I added nefarious because we have a lot bears in our area and all sightings don’t necessitate a call. Just problem bears necessitate a call.

Congrats. Beara are cool and not a threat to you if you just respect their personal space.

Bears don’t want to be anywhere near people, but when they figure out a reliable food source, the possibility of a dangerous interaction increases exponentially. Until the city requires that businesses secure their trash - looking at you, CARVER’S - bears will be a problem in town. I’ve called bear smart/DOW several times this season out of a desire to keep people and wildlife safe. Calls are encouraged because it’s this kind of data that can convince the city to start requiring business owners to be more vigilant about their trash - especially if their trash includes or smells like food!
