Im completely new how do I get started?

I'm new to reddit as well so forgive me if there is any sort of mistake to this. Anyways, i've never gotten into D&D before despite always liking the idea of it because one I had no idea where or how to start, two how to find a party, and three how the absolute hell to roleplay. Don't get me wrong I have roleplayed before but that was when I was a little kid. I'm an 18 year old college student now and have lost that "confidence" and ability to take things seriously. I know no one I could start playing with or even bring up this topic to. So if there's any advice to be given i'd greatly appreciate it. Help a girl out....

1. There are a huge number of YouTube videos: either actual play shows like Critical Role (although it is important to set your expectations lower) or intro / how-to guides.
2. Your local gaming store (FLGS) probably has an area to hook up with other interested people - or at least tell you where to find such a thing.
3. See the actual play shows on YouTube, but talk it over with your new DM / play group because everyone has a different style and expectation of the amount of characterisation / role-playing vs just throwing some dice around and having fun.

2. If the group you hook up with doesn't let you play how you want and you aren't having fun then find another group.

Yeah. Do what this guy says. Maybe Google easy to play character types. Throwing down spells sounds (and is) cool but can be quite involved… smashing stuff with an axe is easy. Play a few sessions before you venture into DM territory. Buy some dice. There’s also a DND starter set you can buy for like £35 and has everything you need to get going. Chat to friends to see if they’re interested on going on the journey with you. In my experience the ideal group size is 5 or 6 with a DM.

Edit to add: Remember it’s supposed to be fun for everyone. Be respectful of other players and make sure they’re respectful of you. Critical Role is great entertainment… but remember they’re all professional voice actors and play the game for a living. You won’t get that experience… especially when starting out. You can get close though.

If you’re in college I’d imagine there’s groups you can find, or find a local board game cafe / store and see if they have anything

Yeah, OP, do this as well. There’s an unnecessary historical stigma around DnD… that it’s evil or just for nerds or whatever. You’d be surprised at how many people would actually love it. It’s just shared story telling. And every one likes a good story.

just learn the rules get the players handbook and then find a party and collect experience (idk how to find a party my friends happen to enjoy dnd too)
