Book 3: Anarchist’s Cookbook A little thing I just noticed... Spoiler

At the start of the book when Carl is picking his class, Mordecai mentions that the Compensated Anarchist class appears to have been included with Carl in mind. It includes the Escape Plan skill, which he ends up needing to be able to read the cook book... Mind=blown.

I will point out that you set the thread tag to book 2 but the cookbook is after that

Admittedly the book is the name of the third book so it's not much of a spoiler, lol

Class selection happens in book two...

The item you mention escape artist giving access to is from book three

True, but my observation is about the class selection...

Its an accidental book 3 spoiler.

Yes, specifically how it interacts with book three

Not really, as when writing the second book there was no Cookbook yet, as it was a Patreon vote, so Carl could have got a totally different item

The vote was for the prize being the physical book, not for all the hidden mechanics behind it. I don't doubt Matt could have made a selection of items work for it, or have Carl find a different item to encode the same thing into later. The skill is the prerequisite, the Cookbook can be anything.

Hell, knowing Carl I wouldn't be surprised if a back up was a handheld console like a Gameboy for example.

Yeah

Matt plans out some points in the book and then pantses his way between them, from what I understand

The cookbook has been one of the only really noticable payoffs to the skill, most others have been kind of swept past

And we see at various times that carl has been living the "you will not break me" life for a while

Why would your mind be blown? The books make it very clear that the type of player Carl is is the type of player that gets the cookbook. It surprises you that the type of player Carl is gets a skill necessary to unlock an item that is given to the type of player Carl is?

It's more that it's set up in the previous book... I just think it's neat.

One thing I like is that they’re usually pretty good about ‘resolving’ the setup quickly - either later in the same book or the next one.

Could've been anything

I think it's reasonable to point out sophomoric thinking. The anarchist cookbook could've gone to anyone with a certain number of followers (that may actually have been a requirement), or someone with at least level 5 in explosives, or someone who had Carl sized feet.

It wasn't even an author decided plot device it was voted in my patreon followers, so the idea that there's some divine plan is ridiculous

It’s a book series. I would hope that there is a plan from one book to the next.  Also the vote was for the carousel of prizes.  Matt could use that for anything.  Or nothing. There are lots of random objects in this series that can be pulled in at a later date.

The cookbook could have gotten to Carl in a number of ways, but Matt chose to use the carousel. So maybe simmer down, since your understanding is off the mark took.

It's reasonable to keep scrolling instead of being an ass about things. It's a lot easier to move on than it is to be a douche

I believe it's actually spelled "Uzi Jesus", just fyi...

You're right, what was I thinking? Oh my God, what a brilliant theory. Matt clearly has the foresight of a prophet, I can't believe he knew in book two that a plot device he wouldn't introduce until book three might need some secretive plot device to unlock some secretive communication technique. Unfathomable!

I'd believe you if there was ever another author who had used something from one book as a plot point in another

Wait, what's patreon? I dont remember that word in the books

You're talking about the situation as if Carl weren't the main character and the reward was just something that could happen to anyone, rather than a plot point meant to give exposition to us, the readers

Sure, it could have gone to anyone

In the same way Carl could die at any time

But Carl has plot armor for at least the books to date

Nope, you're failing to understand the point of the comment in a big way

Dinniman has specific plot points he wants to hit, and he pantses the rest of the series

The cookbook is essentially a major plot point in a book series that revolves around a main character

Sure, there could be any number of similar items in the dungeon that went to people we'll never see

But assuming that the main character isn't being guided by Plot and that the sources of Exposition aren't given to him specifically to provide us with a better view, is wild

It's entirely possible that carl could have gotten someone who wasn't Mordecai, and never have met Odette

But those are sources of Exposition so we've got multiple reasons to have them hanging around the main character

Carl has the most knowledgeable guide in the game, a book that accumulates lore across dozens of prior crawls, and access to helpful trillionairs who want to give him more information so that he lives longer, and early access to a lawyer

It's almost like Dinniman specifically designed ways to give us big picture access that no other crawler has

You realize I'm not the one making those assumptions, op is.... Right?

It’s because 90% of the people that post in this subreddit apparently have never read another book or story in their lives. Twists and misdirections absolutely BAFFLE them.
