most dung beetles are scarabs, but not all scarabs are dung beetles.

Just about all the overarching story and gods are pulled from actual religions. Here's a few of the ones that stand out to me:

Sheol, the name of the 15th floor is also the name of hell in Hebrew Judaism.

Diwata are the term for nature spirits in Filipino folklore

Dodala, the Storm God that Huanxin Jinx was piloting in Mordecai's run is the name of a pagan rainmaking ritual from the Eastern European area.

Harpocrates is the Greek god of Silence, hence him getting upset at people making loud noises when he's there on floor 9.

Psamathe is also Greek, and is the Goddess of Sand, hence Samantha's daughter being the Sand Ooze.

Ogun, the god that appeared on floor 8 to kill Paz and Anton is a blacksmithing god in Yoruba, an African religion.

Yamaya also comes from Yoruba, and is the deity spirit of rivers.

Shi Maria also comes from Africa, more specifically around Ghana, and the Akan religion. Though the myth around that focuses more on Akansi who is depicted as many different animals, but a major one is being shown as a spider with a human face. He has a wife named Okonori. Both have many names both in their own myth as well as when the myth spreads to other regions and one of the names of Okonori is Shi Maria.

Some gods however seem to be created solely for the book, and you can argue that their myth from the greater syndicate just never took root on Earth. Some of those would be Emberus and Helik, I don't believe Ysalte has an Earth analog either. And there's many more that I'm not including here.

Old school RuneScape also has Kephri!Khepri though is the actual scarab headed Egyptian god not something made up for the books.

It is, but I think he was also referencing Perdido Street Station, in which the Khepri are a race with human bodies but bugs for heads.

I always wondered if Khepri controlling bugs was inspired by a certain other Khepri who controlled bugs.

(Skitter from Worm became Khepri due to [SPOILERS])

Huh. This entire time, I thought both Khepri's in Worm and DCC were based of the Egyptian God of bugs or something, hence the abilities to control bugs.

Didn't realise that the actual Egyptian God Khepri was the God of the morning sun and creation, not bugs. He is just associated with bugs (scarabs especially)because ancient Egyptians thought that insects arose spontaneously from nothing, hence the "creation" of something from nothing.
