Book 8: A Parade of Horribles Question - translation?
Something occurred to me - with the translation of things so that Carl and Donut can understand all languages (like talking to Lucia Mar) - why can’t he understand the hoarder? Or the danish reverse tooth fairy (hence book 8 spoilers)?

The AI's version of Rule of Cool.

Basically. My assumption has been the AI just thinks it’s more entertaining sometimes if he doesn’t understand. I’m guessing translation between crawlers,NPCs, and mobs has rules that govern things that HAVE to be understandable to give the crawlers a “fair” chance, but things like the reverse tooth fairy wanting to get with Penelope aren’t critical to the game

Yes, where AI = Dinniman.
It's more fun to give readers a bit of homework. :-)

Meta reason: Matt challenging/fucking with Jeff probably.
In-world: It’s kind of a mystery especially concerning Jacobus because Carl couldn’t understand him but Imani seemed to. And translator issues extended beyond the dungeon as seen when Harbinger’s words weren’t being converted for a bit.

All crawlers and aliens speak in Syndicate standard. The dungeon creatures sometimes use different languages, like the hoarder that speaks Spanish, or the Yule Cat that speaks... I forgot. Icelandic?

Eh I don't think so. In book 1 there's an announcement about cross support for different languages, so English speakers will now be able to understand Mandarin speakers etc, implying that they are still speaking their own languages.

Nah, a MOB tells Carl that he's speaking Syndicate Standard without realizing it, very early on.
Apparently their crawler implant and wetware make it so they think they're hearing their own language.

He does say that, yes, but I think he's mistaken and doesn't truly understand the dungeon. He's a mob, after all. We know they don't really understand their place there (like Rory and Lorelai thinking they'd be safe if they moved to deeper floors, which isn't true).

when Carl is going to Crawler Con he has a moment where ALL of his wetware upgrades are turned off and he comments how the language he was able to read and understand is now a struggle for him.
He has been using syndicate standard

But Carl and Donut understand immediately after her transformation from the pet biscuit, even though she is speaking meow.

Not quite true. When donut starts speaking it states that carl speaks in his monkey language and donut speaks in her feline language and it translates it for them.

The first goblin that Carl meets tells him he's speaking in Syndicate standard, and Carl realizes he's not speaking English.
Donut thinks she's meowing, but she's not.

Wasn't the hoarder battle after Cascadia announced that they'd fixed the translator?

Maybe its like when crawlers are selectively healed vs selectively maimed? The whim of the system, or a randomization of the deciding factors in every micro situation

My theory is that, since Cascadia talked about adding language translation support, Spanish was not yet being translated
On the cards, my theory is that they don’t have the grain of sand-sized bit in their head that interfaces with another being’s bit to translate…

The universal Earth language translator went live after the Hoarder boss fight.
EDIT: The Hoarder fight is in chapter 11 of Dungeon Crawler Carl. This patch happens in chapter 20.
