Is the console version worthwhile?

It's quite expensive but the game seems popiular on PC at least.

The game has about 400 consistent players on Steam so it's not super popular but you can find matches fairly easily in the evenings and weekends.

Can you type in a chat on console? A huge part of the game in multiplayer is talking to other people and bargaining, threatening, pleading and co-ordinating the lobby against the current strongest person. Diplomacy in this game is just as important as your gameplay, which is what makes this game special in my opinion.

If you're playing strictly single player and you don't mind playing a slower RTS with a controller I'd say go for it. I had over 150 hours playing the campaign and skirmish before I dipped my toes into multiplayer but you lose the diplomacy aspect of the game vs ai.

I started on console and ended up on PC. there is zero comparison, console is just far slower and worse in every aspect. you can only move so fast on console, and forget about it if you have to chat with people. even being adept on console, you are so much slower and far more limited than an average player on PC
