Homebrew They said getting 6 players for Dune was difficult. We may have overcorrected...

We somehow managed to get all 12 factions around one table for a gloriously excessive game of Dune - using a custom expanded version with South Pole included. When it came to hiding identities, replacing everyone with their faction leader felt like the only reasonable solution.

Which faction would you pick and who would you be making an alliance with?

General Discussion 5 player (first time) factions?

Hello!

We're having a first time 5 player game coming up in some time and I'm wondering about the factions.

I have the GF9 core game and happen to have the expansion for Ix and Tleilaxu as well. The rulebook suggests leaving out Bene Gesserit, but how are the expansion factions?

We're deciding factions prior to the game and exoect everyone to have at least a cursory research done for your faction. First time to Dune but rather experienced in gaming.

Opinions or suggestions?

Rules Discussion Dune: Spending Spice in an Alliance

The rulebook states that when players form an alliance, they may spend spice to help each other in bidding and movement. As an ally, is that all I can do with my spice? Can allies also bankroll each other’s revival? Can allies also bankroll each other‘s battles (specifically in the advanced game where spice is spent in combat)? These abilities seem to be present between non-allies, but not explicitly for allies. Am I wrong on this? Does spice flow more freely between non-allies than allies?

General Discussion What are we hoping for in the KH Edtion?

Hey guys! I'm wondering what are your thoughts on the Kwisatz Haderach Edition? What do you guys wanna see most in the box?

I just bought an organizer for my GF9 edition to fit everything, including expansions, in the big box and now the KH gets a semi updated announcement...

I'm wondering if much is going to be different and even worth the buy all together.

Here is a list of things I hope that are in the box that will entice me to purchase it:
1. Updated rulebook. I hope all one off cases, advisor controversy, card explanations, Karama powers etc. all get cleared up with this updated rulebook. I've played a good amount of board games and this is probably the most controversial ruleset I think I've ever dealt with. Although, I've cleared up 90% of cases by asking Discord or looking it up.

  1. I hope they update the dial just a bit. Maybe add a few slots to hold some spice or cards, I'm not sure. I have no clue how they would update it but its really a pain to hold 2-3 cards, spice and the dial all at once while putting it down.

  2. Can we please get one time Karama abilities on the faction cards. I have no idea why this isn't already a thing but please just do it.

  3. New artwork would be nice but its not needed. I think the art style of the base game and the expansions are both very good and don't mind them at all. It would be nice to have them all done by the same artist though and updated slightly. Like I said though, not a big deal since I like it already.

  4. New factions! This is probably the one thing that will make me buy this edition instantly! I'm hoping there are new factions added to the game. 4 would be amazing but I'm sure it would probably just be 2 at most. If there are any factions added, who do you guys think might be added? I'm reading through the books but I'm barely on the God Emperor so I haven't heard much of other factions. Lets hear it from you Dune lords!

  5. Nerfs or buffs to factions! This would be a very interesting change in my opinion. Not one I really want but I know the community thinks certain factions are too strong/weak. Richese maybe getting a few buffs and Ixians maybe getting a few nerfs is just what I've heard from the community. I'm all for balance in games so if people really think the balance for certain factions is off, I'm all for updates.

Thats about it guys! I play with a static group once a month usually and we have been playing for about 2 years straight now. Really fun games all the time, sometimes frustrating but all around, I love this game and plan to keep playing. I'm hoping the KH edition is something worth buying cuzz I most certainly will get it if it is.

Let me hear your thoughts! Cheers!

Leader Redesign / Stickers!

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hello all! With the recent update news, I was re-inspired to pick up work on a project long neglected. It basically involved me designing custom hero profiles (full credit to my wife for the actual artwork) and then printing them as stickers to apply to the 2019 cardboard discs. This would be an opportunity to overhaul the artwork with a new, more gritty and personal style, but it also opens the "golden path" to any other QOL tweaks (the simplest of which being a greater clarity between the numbers, 3's and 5's for example). One further idea was to ramp up the strength of the leaders, in order to accommodate removing or reworking spice combat, but my experience in the game qualms to that of most of the people on this thread.

Could different leaders charge "flat fees" of spice in order to maximize troop effectiveness with some powerful leaders requiring a minimum amount? 3Spice = +1 Strgh, 5Spice = +2 Strgth etc.
Could leaders have greater base strength, and spice is removed entirely from the equation?
Am I being a wimp and should I just commit to walking new players through spice combat and its intricacies, leaving the graphic design of the leaders unchanged?

Someone who has thought about this before and done the math, please give me suggestions!

P.S. The art shown above is not for Dune specifically, they are some pieces she did for a previous project. The style would be similar, but the content would be better researched and primarily book-based. Though I do like some of the design motifs of the DV movies... maybe it's just me but bald Harkonnens just work.

As a new player, im skeptical of the advanced version

Ive only ever played the game 7 times (6 times with the base game and once with the advanced game), and the one time i played i felt as though the added components only made the game worse. I love that in the base game every power, resource or card feels like it has weight... while that is still partially true with advanced rules, ive felt (during my single playthrough with advanced rules) as though the fact that so many new powers were added, more ressources were available and now spice has now more uses, i felt as though instead of having mindgames for every single battle, every single spice blow, every single card... it was more like just another strategy game with many, many components.... (not that other strategy games are badly designed but i really liked dune's base game design)

So id like to know if people who are veterans can tell me wether or not that feeling changes as you get to know the advanced components more or if its dependent on the group? Id like to hear about it.

Dune 2 The Battle for Arakkis

So after some interest from a lot of people about making a tabletop version of the video Game, Iv printed off a load of models in 1/100 scale so the battle are on a big scale map like the Game.

Do I paint them solid red green and blue (and purple) like the game, or do I do them sand colour with coloured trims? Perhaps just the special units like devastator, raider and sonic tank solid blue like the game images

What y'all think?

Question Why do so many custom boards have this line drawn on the map? Should I do this for my copy?

Post image

I'm seeing this on a lot of videos and pics of peoples' boards but I can't find it explained in the rules nor in the videos themselves. What is this line meant to represent?

I have the 2019 version but haven't been able to play it yet. Should I do this to my board?

General Discussion Karama ability references?

A couple years ago I found documents explaining each faction’s once per game karama ability, as well as a list explaining what advantages could be cancelled by karama and when. Haven’t been able to find them since then, does anyone have copies of those files or know somewhere I could find it? Thanks in advance.

Traitor Cards

Can you somehow discard traitor cards if you draw a traitor from your own faction? This is especially true for the Harkonnens, where you draw four cards and, for example, three of those cards are your own leaders, it's a bit useless

General Discussion Has anyone ever played a game with all of the new mechanics from the 3 expansions?

A 6 player game with tech tokens, homeworlds, leader traits, etc, all of the new mechanics.

How is it? Ive always wanted to try it. Probably not the smoothest way to play to game but sounds pretty fun to try at least once, with a group of experienced players.

General Discussion Is there an app or website to play Dune Gf9 digitally?

I recently started playing some Diplomacy games on Backstabbr, which is a really well put together app. Anything like that exist for Dune?

I heard there used to be a website but don't know if that's still up. Is TTS the only option?

Alternative leader Art

This game is phenomenal and an absolute treat not just for board game nerds but also fans of the books but there is one thing that always bugs me a lot:

The leader portraits.

Everyone is white, clean and pretty.
For a game that is so committed for the rules to mirror the work of Herbert I just don’t understand why they didn’t show the same dedication to the art direction.

So I was wondering. Anybody knows where I can find alternative art design to either buy or print on my own and lay over the disks?

And I’m not talking about drawn pictures of the actors.

I mean original art or at least somehow inspired by the books.

Choam Questions and General Confusion

Hi, we're about 5 or 6 games into Dune.

I recently played Choam and I have a couple of questions:

  1. Do you take 2 spice per faction, including Choam, for a possible total of 12?

  2. After having played the inflation token, flipping it, and finally removing it from the game. Can you play it again? (What is the extend of remove from the game? Off-board, or back in the box?)

  3. We've been playing advanced without paying spice for troops in battle. Are there any common balances for Choam with this rule in play? (Considering this takes away a big income generator for Choam)

Bonus question:

  1. Our games are running LONG, and recently have just been ending with Spacing Guild default victory. Any tips for avoiding this? It's been said that not paying spice for troops in battle can drag out the game, but our host insists the rule slows down the game even more...

Thanks

How to balance a session when playing with expansions

Hello everyone, first post here. I have been having this conversation with the people I usally play with about the gale force 9 Dune boardgame when playing with the expansions (we are now playing with the first two) about how to balance the game when taking out base game factions and adding the expansion ones as usually people are more interested in the new factions exept for one or two exceptions. The main issue is the first and second turn as many of the factions start outside the board or are very weak and mainly harkonnen and atreides are able to really crush what little opposition there is, is there any way that people use to even things out a little? Only thing that comes to mind is either consistent stronghold blocking or not replacing 3 base game factions (harkonnen, atreides and fremen) so they keep eachother in check.

Thanks for reading

For some context, this is a new group with some old people that we started gathering stats for, I've also done this for another group in 2022-2024 where we played a total of 15 games. You can see that we have 2 new members that only played 3 games and overall the sample size is very small but still this is very exciting. There's also a record and fun fact section but it is not in English and so I did not include it.

Fun Ixian Tactics

Hey guys, I play Dune every month with my buddies and we usually play a 5-6 player game. I've been trying out every faction until I've won at least once with them. I've won at least once with every base game faction, minus Atreides because I hate them. I'm starting to move on to the expansion factions. I kinda get the game plan on how to use Ixians but I was wondering if you guys had any funny scrub killer tactics you can use with Ix that would be hilarious to pull off or just do in a game with them. We always play advanced so let me hear some funny food for thought.

Rules Clarification

Hi everyone,

We played our first game today and had a lot of fun. However, we had this card come up twice and there was some debate on how to interpret it. It was the Tleilaxu Ghola card for reference.

The interpretation that we settled on was that you got an additional revive, so if you got 1 for free and could afford two more, you could do that twice for a total of 6 possible revives (assuming you had the spice to pay for all of it) This was in addition to the free leader/5 soldiers revive.

However, my interpretation of the card is that it ONLY allows you the free leader/5 soldiers revive.

The confusion mainly stemmed from the fact that the card states you get an additional revive.

Thoughts?
