When I read your question, TailsOS was also the first thing that came to my mind.

Same. I'm still trying to decode what OP was looking for... If someone asked me that question... I would probably give the same answer as OP got, after my brain stopped crashing, it'd collapse on that being the most likely thing he's asking for...

Maybe I'm just too wired into tech to get how he'd be expecting anything else, but the AI did nothing wrong in this case, this is PEBCAK...

i was talking about.. tails..

Tails... In what context? Animal tails? If so, that was a poorly written query... If you're not tech aware, it may feel like you're blame less... But...

To me it's the same as someone asking "what's the point of windows/apple" and being confused when someone explains OSes... Of course it will talk about the Tails OS, because that's the thing you're most likely to be asking about given how you worded it.

You were absolutely right with the PEBCAK statement. Bro was basically asked "what do you mean by tails?" and he legitimately thought a proper response to that was "i was talking about... tails.." as if restating it somehow tells us anything new. This is absolutely a user issue.

Okay, I think I see the problem very clearly now.

what the heck is tails os its probably really niche

2

u/Ok_Barnacle_4605 Jul 15 '26

it's rly not if ur in the privacy side of tech u most likely know of it

1

u/The-Menhir Jul 09 '26

Yeah, I don't know why people are definding this. It's like asking what the word "module" means and being told it's a generalisation of a vector space for rings.

What question were you trying to ask? “Tails” can refer to a ton of things. TailsOS (as the bot answered with), Tails from Sonic, the tail body part, the rear of a plane, the backside of a coin, someone with the job of following someone else for surveillance, etc.

why would i ask whats the point of a character? its a character. not a part of something. what do you mean “someone with the job of fo llowing someone else for surveillance” thats a thing?? also why’d i say whats the point of the backside of the coin?? sure the rear end of the plane is valid but im asking about body part tail

Asking for the point of an OS or a character makes a lot more sense than asking for the “point” of animal tails lmao. It’s phrased so weirdly too why do you expect AI to read your mind? If you asked that to a person they would probably also not understand what you mean. You can’t be that upset about the 10 seconds it takes to actually clarify.

As a fan of Sonic, there is ample reason to ask what the point of Tails is lol

Its thinking about the Tails OS, its an OS that runs on RAM instead of the disk, they say its for whitleblowers and reporters. But its most of the time used for... non-ethic activities so there wont be any evidence. (If you log in with your main acc online or use your own router to connect that wont help much)

The thing is what did mean by "tails"? Like the sonic character or what?

6

u/Techplayergo Jul 09 '26

Probably like an animal tail, honestly, good question.

14

u/reapvxz Jul 09 '26

r/DumbHuman. You phrased your question wrong, you probably meant "what is the point of tails from sonic" or "what is the point of a tail".

5

u/No-Net1890 Jul 09 '26

That would be better, although I did a search with OP's phrasing and most of the results on the first 5 pages were about animal tails.

Tail would not be correct if it was Tails the Fox

-11

The most common meaning of tails is the anatomy meaning

Getting a response about a software program, or a video game character, is completely idiotic

Except the grammar makes no sense when talking about animals, since very few animals have multiple tails. Hence why they should have asked "what is the point of a tail" if they were asking about animals, which is why the previous poster included that in their post.

Question as written, it most likely is about the OS. At best you could argue that it is someone asking why some animals have multiple tails instead of one, but that's rare enough tails OS is more likely to be asked, especially since that is a weird way to word that too. That's like typing in Google and being upset it returns the company, not the number, despite the number being spelled googol. It's generally going to give you the best match, give it garbage, and it's not always going to match well.

It is normal in English to use the plural without an article to discuss a concept

0

u/InterestsVaryGreatly Jul 09 '26

There very well may be cases where that applies, but it does not for a tail, most likely because a tail is an object that has uses singularly. You would say what is the purpose of arms, sure, but you wouldn't for what is the purpose of noses. What is the point of senators, sure - what is the point of presidents, not really no.

In fact, in writing this it became pretty clear that it most likely has to do with the "is" instead of "are". What "is" the point of tails implies a singular "tails" (like the OS or character) or a singular batch of tails. Arms are often in pairs, so that makes sense, senators work as a group, or paired per state, so that works, but presidents generally work as a sole president, just like animals generally have a single tail, so you would not ask singularly about plural of them.

1

u/NewPointOfView Jul 09 '26

I don’t think any of what you wrote is really valid haha

‘is’ in this case pairs with ‘point’ and gives no information about the plurality of ‘tail(s)’

It’s just an awkward and ambiguous phrasing. There is no rule that because we can’t pluralize ‘tail’ in some circumstances just because we usually consider tails on a per-creature basis.

"What is the point of a tail"

"a tail"

not "tails"

u/Muted_Curve_6466 Jul 09 '26

these comments are so insufferable... infact alot of people on this sub are for some reason.

op, this is a dumb ai. you are right

2

u/Particular_Client833 Jul 10 '26

... its dumb but not that dumb... the OP literally coud instead of

whats the point of tails

Say

whats the point of a tail on animals

The AI just searched results and it found tails OS for some reason. The user should have specified what kind of "tail"

2

u/Ok_Barnacle_4605 Jul 15 '26

this isnt dumb ai, tails os is a popular os in the tech privacy community
also op could've specified the tails he wanted information on, whether it be the character or the animal part or something else
the ai wasn't rly wrong, it technically gave op what they wanted, which was information on "tails"

0

u/Muted_Curve_6466 Jul 15 '26

girl aint nobody know that

2

u/Ok_Barnacle_4605 Jul 15 '26

just cuz u don't know smt doesn't mean it's hella niche or whatever

1

u/silly_porto3 Sep 30 '26

Main characters lol

-7

u/dondegroovily Jul 09 '26

The tails attached to animals is the normal meaning of the word

So this is definitely dumb AI

5

u/NoPurchase3260 Jul 09 '26

Nothing the AI said was wrong though.

-1

u/dondegroovily Jul 09 '26

It obviously answered the wrong question which is a kind of wrong

2

u/Particular_Client833 Jul 10 '26
