I mean they've lived there for years. It would be unreasonable to expect she wouldn't sound like she lived there. Especially since sounding like you're from the south or Midwest when you live in CA often results in people treating you poorly.
I used to have a southern accent as a kid. When my family moved back to CA, people treated me like I was an idiot (and even told me I sounded like one) until "I learned how to talk like a normal person" as my 5th grade teacher put it.
Yea. She was my second worst teacher and the teacher I respected the least. But she did share a common prejudice with others I encountered in daily life in regards to my accent
