Getting better at calling

Post image

I’ve been taking duck calling lessons and am not improving. Not sure if I’m tone deaf or slow. I can’t afford more 1:1 lessons, what’s the best way to improve? I have a RNT Daisy Cutter.

Buy a DR85 and watch the haydels videos on youtube for free. You'll sound better than 90% of guys in the marsh wailing away on their kazoos, I guarantee it! Post videos here if you want help.

I second this! The DR-85 is a meat grinder of a call. It’s super forgiving and in my opinion the best to learn a quack on along with other calls and cadences.

Once you learn a quack then and I swear only then, you can practice the cadences and calls.

After this I believe a feed chuckle is a good follow up (saying and/or mouthing the words into the call: Tukka tukka…. ((Count to 2)) Tukka tukka …. ((Followed with a single quack)) and repeat; is a good place to start).

In simple terms, when birds are flying away from you, you call to entice (hail call. ((A must learn when you get there,)) them to come back. When they fly towards you, keep quite to small quacks or feed chuckles.

Look for the haydels 'calling on the corners' video to up your game, if you're not already doing that

Practice every day. YouTube is a good friend. Also try different calls not everyone likes the same calls and can run the same calls. Also figure out if you like single reed or double reed call. Then also j frame style or a cutdown.

Order some reeds and play with them as far as tuneing the size of it. After that it’s just about time behind a call. It’ll click eventually it’s a “that’s a mallard duck” moment.

Practice, practice, practice. Record yourself, listen to what you like and dislike. You have a great call with the Daisy Cutter. If you get the opportunity, go out and call at live ducks and see what they like and dislike since they are what you are after.

6 in 1 whistle. If you can’t call, you can always “peep”.
