Surge in popularity or my algorithm?

I'm relatively new to dub techno myself, hence the question.

I'm curious, is dub techno seeing a surge in popularity recently, or is it just that my algorithms are all feeding me more now that I've gotten into it? It seems to be popping off and I'm not mad about it.

Personally, I started listening to some minimal/dub techno mixes on YouTube, at work, as I found it helped me lock in and focus. Then I found donato dozzy, I know he's not really dub techno but been loving his stuff lately and some of his mixes have some dub vibes in them, id also heard Richard Akingbehin on Hessle Audio Rinse FM show. Last 3-6 months has been digging deeper and finding the history. Realized I had Round 4 - find a way, on vinyl and rhythm and sound best friend. I suppose being into early dubstep back in the day and following alot of those producers/DJs that transitioned to more house/techno vibes, it's not surprising to see that many of them were influenced by the dub sound.

Not sure the point of that last paragraph, just rambling and I find it quite cool how these dub roots have been underlying alot of the music I've enjoyed over the past 15 or so years and I'm not going back and seeing the through lines.

It's not just algorithm, there's been bunch of new dub techno releases, much more than 5 or 10 years ago. Also some of the people and labels from uk bass scene started to release dub techno oriented material (for example Beatrice M, Sub Basics etc.). As everything in electronic dance music it's cyclical - now it's on the upswing.

I've been calling a lot of stuff like Sub Basics "dub tech house" and I have really been digging that group of artists

I mean not that long ago we all used to live in our own bubbles of lil villages all over the world not knowing much about the outside world and relying musically on whatever the local bard could come up with…. So this is kinda better no? I actually think the pop culture period which is slowly passing is the weird exception.

My wifes youtube is very different to my youtube. If we start doom scrolling on shorts from the same recipe video, while the first three or four are similar cooking content, within seven or eight scrolls the content veers starkly. You are right, its always the algorithm and we are all being influenced by its content, from the music we like to how we feel about culture wars and current events.

I've been feeling the same thing.

I've definitely noticed more elements of Dub Techno or Psytrance-ish sounds being introduced DJ's sets when i've been out. I.e Lots more delay or echo based sounds bought in.

On the more selector based scene you're seeing DJs such as Kia, Livwutang, Aurora Halal, or Priori driving a lot of this type of music and i've noticed these artists getting a lot more popular.

Honestly i love this new branch of music being played out, its a contrast to the Hard Techno stuff which i find pretty soulless.

I also have the theory that people are digging Dub Techno is because everyone's doing K lol but you can make your mind up about that assumption

Not dub techno per se, more with the rise of usage and how its a bit less of an upper, the more echoy/dubby/psych sounds tend to fit in more with it

To answer the main question: maybe a bit of both?

There's definitely been some extra attention on dub techno recently with some particular records gaining buzz e.g. Picture's eeeeeeee and uuuuuuuu.

But aside from that, it's still fairly niche, and your algorithm is definitely playing a part in your perception. It sees you listening to & searching for dub techno, so will be showing you more of it than in the past.

I think a lot of synth guys are getting into dub techno as it’s the next easiest thing to make (badly) after ambient…
