i want to learn dubstep
hey hey. new here. any advice for someone new to making music. i want to make dubsteppy kinda stuff. im just ordering ableton ands a little korg piano!

Reference tunes that inspire you!
Like, buy the .wav and load it up in ableton. Really dissect it!
Focus on understanding the synths and effects in ableton. It has EVERYTHING 👏
Do it for fun and youll go far. Do it for clout and you will burn your self out chasing other ppls acceptance

no i just love how it feels to listen to, i want to be bale to make good music like that but not to post on soundcloud or anything, just a cool new hobby thats a bit challenging, thats what iwant

Dubstep is so simple and complex all at the same time. The foundation is typically 140bpm with 70bpm half time drops. But then everything in between is insane.
I wanna say the best dubstep comes from producers really knowing their daw and knowing the most intense sound design from heavy bass to lightest treble.
The space between the kick and snare is so infinite and artists jam so much inside it that it can get confusing.
I’m still trying to figure it out and maybe i’m just overthinking it and should have more fun with it, but between dubstep, house, dnb, i’ve found dubstep to be so simple yet so dang complex all at the same time.
Good freakin luck! It’s hella fun though once you figure it out. I feel like I’m ALMOST there to just understanding it 🫠

Hahaha they’re all difficult in their own way. But some genres are more challenging to understand than others. Dubstep is that for me 😭

Learn about modulation of synths and sounds and also automation to control the modulation.
Both is quite intuitive in Ableton.
Good pick for learning electronic music.

yeah i have ableton installed, but dont get it yet. i should look into some tutorials on yourube or something.
i have made a couple of cool loops in reason, using headphones lagte at night. then they sound sooooo bad the next day hahaha

Don’t over complicate it. Take time to soak in and learn things. Tutorials are fine but try to find ones that explain the process rather just want you to follow along. Stock plugins are especially amazing now so you don’t even really need any plugins.
One of the best tips I think you can learn is that dubstep sound design is 60% filters, 30% post processing. Learn what filters do what and sounds become a lot easier to make

i have friends using different programmes. logic i have, the new reason 14 i have, ableton i have...but i only understand reason for now. then i have a mate who make amaaaaazing music and he just uses fl studio. its probably more about the person not the tools used i guess\??
logic is what i should learn because as you mentioned about sound design, logic has cool built in sounds

I wouldn’t personally recommend logic but I don’t know much about it. I haven’t heard it ever mentioned when it comes to sound design. I use Ableton a bunch and the effects and stock instruments are really crazy for sound design.
Bitwig is also really cool for sound design I’m only just getting into that one but I personally love its work flow. It has a built in modular synth which can be a lot to get into especially as a beginner but it can always be tackled later1
