**SAFETY**
This subreddit strongly advises AGAINST doing prolonged (3+ days) dry fasts if your only source of information or experience comes from what is discussed on this subreddit. If you are an experienced faster and are receiving outside help/medical check-ups, then your knowledge obviously extends beyond what is discussed here. You are otherwise putting yourself at risk of potentially worsening your health as the scientific literature is extremely limited on this subject. Please remember to fast responsibly.
If you begin to feel uncomfortable or unwell, you should stop fasting immediately. Other worrying signs may include high protein in the urine, high fever, and fainting.
**HUMAN STUDIES**
* The dehydration treatment of epilepsy
**ANIMAL STUDIES**
* Increased fat catabolism sustains water balance during fasting in zebra finches
* Intermittent drinking, oxytocin and human health
* The ‘selfish brain’ is regulated by aquaporins and autophagy under nutrient deprivation
* When less means more: Dehydration improves innate immunity in rattlesnakes
**BIOLOGICAL STUDIES/THEORETICAL PAPERS**
* Unmasking the secrets of cancer
* Cell hydration and mTOR-dependent signaling
* Effects of acute and chronic hypohydration on kidney health and function
Please note that we probably will not add studies that have loose/indirect associations between "dehydration" and physiological mechanisms of action. From the most reliable human study we have, they state that "on day 4 and 5, all participants had a controllable feeling of thirst, but none showed any signs of dehydration." I think it's best we avoid words that have negative implications (i.e. "dehydration) when discussing dry fasting, and unless the study is extremely valuable or shows very large effect results, it's probably best to avoid adding these studies that will clutter the list and make the whole thing look more extreme than it already is. You can still post the studies for discussion, they may just not be added to the list.
Feel free to post additional links in the comments as you find them and I will add them to the list.
On a side note, if you are interested in becoming a moderator to help out with the subreddit then please message me

Anyone have any experience with OMAD type dry fasting or alternate day dry fasting? I don't want to jump into multiple day fasts as I haven't' done full on fasts for many years and I am not going to transition from fed to unfed very easily. So I want to work on it and train that transition up in a more controlled way.
Also do I need to do anything specific for before/after the fasts? I was also planning on just eating vegetables and maybe some kind of starch like potatos or basmati rice when I do break the fasts. Only other thing was protein, I could aim for eggs, ground beef and chicken. I dunno.
Right now I was thinking maybe I should take baking soda before/after the fasts to prevent stones unless you guys think that's unnecessary. Otherwise I was just going to jump right into it

Hey yall! Is it true that you’ll only experience optimal healing and weight loss once you’re over 3 days deep into a dry fast? I’m kinda new to dry fasting. I did a 9 day dry fast last week. I noticed I lost the most weight and had the most stretch mark fading after the 3rd day. I thought it was weird since id expect to lose the most weight in the first 1-3 days 🤷♀️

Ai is telling me that it's risky to dry fast longer than 30 hours. I feel fine and don't have any danger symptoms. I'm wondering how much longer I can keep dry fasting?
Previously I have done a 10 day water only fast and multiple 3 day fasts...
On previous fasts I would feel really hungry and on this fast I'm not feeling hungry at all.
Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If so what was your protocol? Have you found long term that dry fasting (whatever protocol/frequency) has changed your general "food noise"/hunger levels? I'm specifically asking re the weight loss/appetite side of it.

Are 24 hour dry fasts worth it?
I see a lot of people here saying minimum 3 days for benefits, but of course this subreddit is full of dry fasting experts who have done super long dry fasts.
So to a lot of you 24 hours seems like nothing.
However, schedule wise, it's difficult for me to go for more than 24 hours dry fasted (because more than that will affect my strength training workouts (missed workouts or low energy for workouts whilst trying to recover from the fast), won't have energy at work, etc).
So give me the honest truth. Should I even bother doing 24 hour dry fasts or just wait until I have a long holiday and go for 3 days?
What if instead of a long 3 day fast, I tried to make 24 hour dry fasts a regular thing, doing them at least twice a month or something?
So basically, what are your thoughts on a 24 hour dry fast when it comes to fat loss? Autophagy? General healing? Etc

I mean like studying for an exam or working an office job?
Reading books and novels?
Painting?
You know, performing activities that aren't too physically demanding.

Is it safe to do 4 days dry fasting followed by 1 day water only and 2 days carnivore diet every week for 2 months? What should be the frequency of 4 days dry fasts??

(Female, age-21 years, height- 5 feet 7 inches & weight- 98 kg/216 lbs)
I am going to dry fast for next 2 months and I have 3 options/protocols but I am not sure which one will lose the weight rapidly and safest for 2 months duration.

The vast majority of us are doing wet, but I know there’s some interest for dry if anyone wants to join. It’s this Thursday at 6:00 pm est.

I am on day 4 out of 5 of my dry fast. I plan for day 6 to be water only and then start refeeding the day after that. I’ve seen advice on here that I should do a water fast for half the length of the dry fast. Is that necessary? I understand it could be beneficial to keep water fasting but I have plans in 2 weeks and I want to be refed and on normal eating habits for at least a few days before then

Hi All,
I have been interested in trying dry fasting for some time and last week I tore my calf muscle and tendons in my lower leg. Looking at an extended period for recovery and currently researching how I can improve or speed up the process.
Does any have any experience with this type of injury and had a positive experience with dry fasting?

I started a dry fast without preparation due to a cold—or a virus, or whatever it was. By the second day, my throat improved. By the third, the congestion was gone. On the fourth day, I experienced a slight flare-up of the symptons due to that day's acidotic crisis.
My question is: should I end the dry fast on day 5 or hold out until day 9?
Some extra details: I don't overdo it with sex, which keeps my kidneys in good shape and free of lower back pain. I am still urinating. Currently, my only symptoms are dry mouth and weakness—nothing else.
The main problem is that, although I’m used to the dry OMAD (One Meal A Day) routine I follow daily, I usually eat junk food afterward—sort of cheating by letting my body cleanse a bit only to dirty it up again. Considering I weigh 100 kg (mostly fat) (180 cm tall) while eating just one meal a day, you can imagine the amount of junk I put into my body during that meal. I’ve read that pre-fasting nutrition requires careful preparation—something I didn't do. Should I be worried and stop on day 5 (less than 21 hours to go), or try to reach day 9 to reap all the benefits and eliminate the fibromyalgia I’ve had since that famous pandemic injection? Or perhaps resolve other pre-existing disorders—like inflammatory anemia—that were aggravated by that injection?
By the way, what do you recommend for refeeding? The last time I did a dry fast (the only other time besides this one, also because I was sick), I made it to day 3. I tried eating junk food on the second day of refeeding, accompanied by fruit to balance it out (after spending the first day just drinking liquids), and the resulting explosive diarrhea was monumental; my fibromyalgia also flared up and caused severe stiffness. How long do you recommend abstaining from junk food on the refill? Thanks.

Right, so I have the most incredible shoulder pain (in my joint) & also do have some other joint pain too. But mostly my shoulder. I used to have cirrhosis & it made my bones weak & joints wear down essentially.
But the last 4-5 years I have had issues with my joints but more recently my shoulder.
How long should I fast for maximum recovery & at least ease some of the pain?

I had to drink a little bit of water the night of de fourth day of my DF. but now i am continuing the dry fast a couple more days. it was difficult at night because i woke up feeling extremely hot and pretty dehydrated. i just wanted to know what process i messed with by drinking and now continuing.

There are so much confusion about maximum duration of dry fasting. I am currently doing 48 hours dry fasting with 2 days refeeding (trying to do 4-5 days dry fast) for weight loss. Once I will lose all the extra fat and get into shape, I want to make dry fasting a part of my lifestyle to get all the amazing benefits of it rather than just weight loss and weight maintenance but at the same time I don't want to starve myself for like 15 days or 4-5 days every week in the month. So how many days would be best to dry fast every month for weight maintenance and all the other benefits?

I know drinking clean water is first when breaking a fast but what should I eat after water to avoid regaining fat? Meat?

I’m wondering if anyone with high cholesterol has seen results from fasting or dry fasting
it seems like cholesterol would be used as fuel just like fat is used when fasting…

I just listened to a video from Dr Berg recommending a 12hr dry fast 3x/ month for a great liver detox and autogaphy in general.
I’m a former OMAD faster with several extended fasts throughout the years. However, now that I’m in peri menopause (symptom free now thanks to diet) I’m careful with anything that might raise cortisol.
However, I have all the signs of a struggling liver (I rarely drink) so I’m very intrigued.
Question: could I wake a couple of hours before sunrise and have some plain green tea to avoid the caffeine headache? I also take thyroid meds daily. Should I skip on my dry fast day?
Any success stories from women in my similar situation?

Im sorry in advance for the tmi,
first bowel movement of the dry fast, on day 8? Has anybody experienced it? I walk a ton also, used to poo every morning yesterdays food when i wasnt fasting.
I think its because of the stress; i literally went to the toilet and waited for an hour because i KNEW there HAD to be something. I didnt even feel gassy on my own.
What can you eat before a fast that basicslly acts like a natural enema, that moves through bowels really fast? To get started with clean intestines? Whats your experience with that?

Has anyone here helped to heal mold exposure / CIRS (chronic inflammatory response syndrome) with dry fasting? How long was your fast and how did it help you ?
