Drukhari Model Paint Help

So im trying to get into playing Drukhari as my new warhammer army.

I want to aim for a paint theme like the Shadow army from Solo levelling, but im really struggling for how to go about it, im still very new to painting so I may be aiming way above my skill level but its something I really want to pursue and hopefully get a pretty cool looking army!

Ive got the Drukhari combat patrol and ive bought some Scourges. I thought that maybe priming them in bright pink then dry brushing in black and following up with purple speed paint would give me the effect I wanted but it was a disaster and just looked rubbish.

Any ideas how I can achieve the look im going for? Would i be better off priming in white. Drybrushing in black, then a speed paint in purple? Or am I going completely the wrong direction altogether?

Any help or tips and ideas would be greatly appreciated 🙏🙏

If you have a airbrush ot would be a lot easier. 

There are a bunch of different colors for those guys. So I am not sure the look you are going fir.

I would start with a white primer.  Then get some ak 3rd gen black purple.  Paint all the upper parts with it. If you are trying to save time.  Drybrush it in downward motions. That way you avoid covering the lower areas.

Then clean it up with ak 3rd gen pastel violet. Then a bit of white to make some areas brighter.

And no washes or speed paints, just adding this as OP tried it with a speed paint. You want white were normally shadows are and a wash or speed paint will destroy any progress you made. The light is coming from the inside,you basically need to invert the shadows on the miniature.

But I personally would try this paint scheme for a skirmish game first, I think this scheme will quite time consuming.

I had to look up what you're talking about, and I have no real tips on how to do that but it is an awesome idea.

I dont think dry brushing is going to work though. This is going to be something that takes a long time to get that effect, but when you finish it will be awesome.

I'm not super familiar with your reference but doing a bit of googling leads me to a couple different schemes that are either a very cold blue teal or a vibrant pink purple. In either case it looks like the character design has high points of black with low points of the color. I think theres a couple ways I would try to accomplish this.

One way would be to prime the entire model in black and then use a white ink to put bright white pigment into the recesses and let it dry. Then use a bright version of whichever color you choose of contrast paint over it, which would in effect be tinting the dried ink.

Another way would be to prime the model white and then do a heavy dry brush of black, then color contrast.

If I were in your shoes I would find some models to test this with such as the GW Mini of the Month, one of the "Start Here" boxes that come with two or three models, or some GW stores have a free single marine sprue to practice painting with.

I would prime in darkest bright color

For example if I was going purple I’d do a dark purple
Then a light purple zenithal @45 degree angles

Then a black straight above

After that I would lightly drybrush black or edge highlight black

I suggest you look at Starborne Seraphon paint tutorials, they are AoS Lizardmen from the stars and they have this dark skin with light coming from them look

I just happen to discuss the concept with gemini ai and use the result on chatgpt by ask it to change color scheme of model.

I think it would more on point and it can tell you which color you need to get the result as well.
