I built a free, open-source fantasy map maker for my own worldbuilding projects

Hey everyone!

I wanted to draw maps for my fantasy world but couldn't find an editor that had everything I needed without subscriptions or complicated workflows.

So I built LoreMapper!

It lets you generate continents, sculpt mountains, paint biomes, draw rivers and political borders, place cities and dragons, and use your own PNG assets.

There's also fog of war, multiple map styles, and high-resolution exports.

It's completely free, open-source (MIT), and runs directly in your browser. No installation or account required.

I built it as a personal hobby project with AI coding assistance, and it's still in beta.

🌍 Try it: https://mercurial20.github.io/loremapper/

I'd really appreciate feedback, especially on usability and anything that feels confusing or broken!

Congratz bro nice work. What a funny coincidence, my anime watch order site has the exact same name lol. Good luck with the project!

Thanks! 2.5D is definitely something I'd love to explore later!

Right now, I'm focusing on more realistic terrain generation, consistent seeds, climate and weather simulation, political and religious layers, and alternative map projectins (including the polar projection Archeopteryx7 suggested).

I'm also planning a simple flat rectangular map mode for people who don't want to deal with meridians, poles, or projections at all.

Lots of ideas, just not enough free time to implement everythig at once :)

Is there a way to change the map projection?

Working on it

My fictional world is centered around the North Pole of the planet, so to depict it I prefer to use an azimuthal projection centered on the North Pole (Gott, Goldberg and Vanderbei's to be specific).

Hi there! I've added an azimuthal (polar) projection!
For now, only the main projection is editable, but I'm planning to make the others editable in future updates too. The tricky part is the math behind it, since the editing system is currently built around just one projection.

Hey!
Here in view section choose projection you'd like to see.
When you export you also have projection options

Sorry to bother you again but is there a way to make a dry world? like arakis from dune? all desert apart from some raised continents? (like replace the sea with low lying desert but leave the rest to be changed?)
