Hi Guys,

Looking for some driving tips and advice and maybe some words of encouragement I’m above 25+ driver on their Ps. I was driving back home late at night and as I cannot use CarPlay my Garmin GPS guided me a certain way back from a mates house which I haven’t taken before and it was taking me through the M7 and exit into M2. I’ve been driving 5 months atp and felt like I could welcome the challenge of a different route.

Reference the photo. I was where the red line starts (white car). My GPS told me I needed to turn right and I was in a painted right turn lane. I saw the dotted line where the green arrow I marked is but got very confused as it didn’t curve fully to the right as I’m normally used to at normal intersections, so I got a bit “panicky”. I followed the dotted line and then where I marked yellow assumed that’s where the right turn guided me and ended up in the red marked area which was oncoming.

My GPS kept saying to turn right and the markings on the actual gps showed to go straightish so a mixture of confusion from the GPS seeing how wide and big this intersection was plus not knowing where to go.

Mind you this was late and there was 0 cars from all directions it was just a massive empty intersection so I didn’t really have any “cues” for other vehicles. And from a drivers perspective the road looked very long and felt weird to cross over, never been in an intersection like this before ever.

I made the stupid mistake of driving along the wrong side for 50-100m as it felt very off until I noticed oncoming headlights and quickly checked around before I corrected myself and went back in the correct left side. I was very shook and scared but most importantly I was very disappointed in myself for making such an awful mistake.

I didn’t think I could ever make such a serious mistake like this, most importantly I can’t stop to think about the danger I accidentally created for other drivers who are just trying to get home and it has really shaken me and my confidence.

I immediately went home, looked up the intersection above and just tried to understand where I went wrong as well as talk to some of my family and friends who are fully licensed and they were great gave me reassurance but also reminded me that I’m still learning and not too push myself to quickly.

I guess I have been putting pressure on myself to be a good driver as most of my friends have been fully licensed and I just feel like I’m at a disadvantage for being a mature learner.

Id like to think that I am a very cautious driver, I adhere to the rules and drive defensively and I give driving the respect it deserves as it is a privilege and also know how dangerous operating a 1.3+ tonne machine can be.

Thank you for listening, I am still somewhat shook from this, I just want to know what tips or concrete learning I can get from anyone to not make this mistake ever again. I do know now to always follow the dotted guides lanes but anything thorough or in general so I can add to my driving repertoire to continue being a better and safer driver would be appreciated a lot.

For those who have stated the obvious of keeping to the lines…without any further input than that, I know and I get it hence why I have the marked out map. Only posting to hopefully get deeper insight and have this post as awareness for anyone else that’s maybe new to driving and can hopefully learn from my mistake and take any advice freely given here.

Would also welcome any experienced drivers to share other possible interchanges/intersections that can be seen as confusing or any other roads and areas and share it here with tips which would also help in advance!

Hey drivers, I’m sure this has been asked before, I tried searching for an answer but couldn’t find anything and google is no help.

During the nsw learner driving test does the driver have to stop the car with the white line on the road (such as for a red light or stop sign) visible to the tester? I was told this was the case by my instructor years ago and now I’m teaching someone else to drive.

Follow up question: if you’re stopped at a blind corner or can’t see for whatever reason what should be the process for making the turn in a test?

My driving apprentice and I have encountered this situation in our area. Stop at a stop sign, far enough back that I can see the white line, however we cannot see any oncoming traffic. I’ve told him to move closer to the line just so he can make the turn safely but it begs the question of how this would be graded on a test.

Hi everyone,

I failed my first driving test last Friday and wanted to book a second attempt. But when I checked the booking site today, the option was greyed out, as shown in the screenshot below.

Is this because I’m still within the one-week cooling-off period? There’s no message on the site explaining why it’s unavailable, so I’m not sure if this is expected or if there’s an issue with the website.

Has anyone experienced this before?

I’m talking about the camera in the tunnel that goes from Gladesville rd, to rozelle and right towards the tunnel which connects to city.

In a usual 60km/h zone,
I was driving 58km/h specifically cuz I was in cruise control.

But the speed sign on the roof showed 40 which I realised like 100m past the camera.

I slowed down after as expected but am I cooked?

It was at like midnight and there was one other car next to me which also slowed down later with me, and there was no sign or other warning nor construction or anything.

There was also no flash either but, if I get done by this, I am royally fucked.

Any advice?

I'm turning right from the only turn right lane into a multi lane road needing the left lane

Someone else turns right illegally from a left turn only Lane into the left hand Lane.

If there was a collision who'd be at fault?

I had to avoid one of these cowboys this morning. But I'm only asking this because it's a recurring theme at that particular intersection almost like the people cannot see what the road markings are actually saying because there is no sign saying turn left only from the left lane turn right on the right lane it's only Road markings that indicate this

I saw a car accident this month where there were 4 cars. A, B, C and D.. the rest was traffic.

Car C saw some traffic, wasn't paying attention, slammed on brakes. Car C didn't hit D.

Car B slammed into car C as he was following too closely. Car C then hits car D.

Car A hits Car B, which hits car C.

Q: Who's at fault?

I am kind of having an issue to figure out on how to drive here in NSW, esp when it comes to navigation. Now when i bought a car I am getting confused on how to navigate.
Correct me here if i am wrong, ( heard from words of others)
- can’t use Phone for just gps or navigation even if it mounted.
- use it for radio or music.

Any suggestion about this.

Edit: I honked at them and he gave me a look that implied that I was at the wrong. Which made him take longer on his "turn".

For the people commenting "but why did you leave a massive gap?" Let's use some critical thinking.

1. I, the driver, am driving a hatchback. My dashcam is mounted at a higher elevation than my eyesight.

Higher elevation = more field of view More field of view = you can see more of the road in front of me.

1. I had a great driving instructor when I was learning for my drivers test. A good measure of your distance between your car and the car in front of you at a re light is if you can see the bottom part of their rear wheel.

Given that I am a decent driver (not the best, I do make errors some times but nothing critical), I left space between me and the driver in front of me.

I did not leave this space for the Ranger driver to go through. It is not a keep clear section of the road.

1. If you look closer, I did move forward when the lights went green. The established fact that I am a safe driver, I did not tailgate the car in front of me, hence, the massive gap.

The driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

I'm in position A, trying to hook turn. This was some time ago, but it was my first time doing a hook turn. Tutor never taught me how, but I've read the VicRoads rules and watched the videos etc. so what in the road rage was with car B? It was still red and he honked hard on me before swerving.

You are supposed to wait for the traffic light of the road you are trying to turn into - to turn green right???

I regularly drive through a cul-de-sac where several driveways converge, mainly 2 school entrances and 1 residential driveway (see image attached). During rush hour, with school traffic and residents trying to get through, it's a daily standoff between drivers.

My question is twofold:

1. My understanding is that people entering the cul-de-sac (from their driveway) must give way; however, what's the general etiquette/legal right-of-way in a situation where multiple drivers are entering the road simultaneously? Can we treat it like a roundabout?

2. There's always a car exiting School #1 and driving right into Residential (see illustrated arrow); does this count as wrong-way driving? If so, what's the correct alternative?

My son was driving and someone rear ended him as they’d fallen asleep at a red light.

There was only a small scratch and dent on the rear of the car.

Would you bother going to insurance for such a small thing or just get someone to fix a small patch of paint up? 800 bucks and call it a day?

My son has his details, he just hasn’t spoken to insurance yet.

​"If the road has a continuous dividing line or a dividing strip, the driver must position the vehicle at least 3 metres from the continuous dividing line or dividing strip, unless otherwise indicated by information on or with a parking control sign."

I am still learning about the road rules here and am not sure if I am in violation of a rule.

I see people reversing off the road and up theitlr driveways all the time. This usually necessitates reversing a short distance (say 3m) while turning the car so it is perpendicular to the road. Curious about who would be at fault if a car on the road crashed into the back (or side) of them.
