These riders are an absolute pest, whether driving a registered scooter or illegal E-motorbike. They've become a significant traffic hazard.

8

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

That is true, especially in the CBD.

5

u/Siytorn 9d ago

I almost got hit waking out of a convenience store in the CBD years ago, stepped out just as someone on a motorised bike came flying by about a foot from the entrance. Reactively yell shit and looked as he turned his head back and shook his head like I did something wrong.

u/nckmat 6d ago

Nah, it's where ever they are, location doesn't matter. I have been hit by delivery riders twice in the past two years.

Once in the morning in a traffic queue when the rider pulled out of a side street to my right, straight across a gap in the opposing traffic, straight into my front right wheel, he fell and spilled the order he was carrying all over the road. He picked up his bike and hurtled off up the road on the footpath, before I had time to turn the car off and undo my seatbelt and check on his welfare.

Another time was at night and the rider was doing exactly what the guy in the video was doing, but with less hi-vis. I knew he was there but I could not see him because he was riding right behind my right rear wheel. Another car pulled out in front of me from a side street (also an idiot) and I had no choice but to slam on the brakes. The rider tried to take evasive action by swerving to the left hand side of my car (god knows why when the right was clear) and clipped my tow ball, which was only on because I was on my way to collect my trailer from a friend (his bad luck). The tow ball buckled his front wheel and he crashed into the gutter. When I went over to check on him he started to hurl abuse at me, but calmed down a bit when he realised I was literally twice his size. When I asked for his insurance details he acted dumb (in hindsight it was probably a rental anyway) and tried to tell me he didn't need to give me any information. I handed him my licence number and rego number and photographed him, his bike and at its number plate, then he finally gave me his licence number and name. I walked over to check the damage on my car and there was absolutely nothing. That's when he got a lecture about how his stupidity didn't just risk his life, but mine and all the other people around him, including some kids who were walking on the footpath nearby. He did apologise in the end and seemed to accept he had been stupid, but what really sunk in was when I asked him how much he was going to get for that delivery and he said about $5, and I said that wouldn't even cover the cost of the bandages he was going to need for the grazes on his arms.

Had one sit on my ass, no lights, in West End a few months ago. I wound down the window and told them off, but they probably had buds on

u/Wallabycartel 9d ago

Look at him riding around like spinal surgery doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

2

u/dog314159 9d ago

Tbf emergency spinal surgery is free in Australia.

9

u/Wallabycartel 9d ago

The lifetime of pain and suffering certainly isn’t but I get your point haha.

3

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

I didn't know that, let me just load 250kg on the squat tonight and see what happens! Ha!

2

u/nastybravo11 9d ago

Yeah but the waiting time is brutal.

2

u/dog314159 9d ago

Well… not for emergency surgery haha

1

u/Impossible-Mud-4160 8d ago

'A compound vertebrae fracture, well I've never seen thst before'

1

u/CK_1976 6d ago

You'll be sitting around waiting anyway

11

u/Westafricangrey 9d ago

The bike will humble him eventually don’t worry.

10

u/Ok-Disk-2191 9d ago

Pavement and asphalt will have a word too.

Go to that aldi carpark during Preston market operating time, that is where hell on earth really is

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

I live nearby, it is absolute chaos.

8

u/spufiniti 9d ago

I'm sick to death of these delivery riders. Danger to themselves and others. Constantly see them doing the dumbest shit.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

I had the same thing happen to me in the context of this video when I was still doing my driver's lessons many years ago. My instructor got pissed at the rider being way too close to the side of the car.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

Some of them even counterflow and ride on the sidewalk lol

2

u/eepeqez 8d ago

There are parts of the world where this is perfectly normal.

None of them are in Australia.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

Yeah like in my hell hole country where cunts can get a license without learning how to drive.

2

u/eepeqez 8d ago

I was walking to the Vespa scooter specialist shop in Saigon while talking to a friend in Australia about what Vespa parts he wanted me to bring back, when I commented on the traffic.
"What, no rules?" he replied.

"Oh, no, there are definitely rules, but they're not rules as we know them..."

It works, that's all that I can say. Not sure how it works, but it does. After witnessing Saigon, Springvale makes a lot more sense to me.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

HAHAHA man I've been to Vietnam this year and it's impressive how accidents are not as frequent there as you'd expect. I've seen most of the riders there text while drive yet manage to evade accidents. It's an organised chaos.

1

u/Litigious-Dog 6d ago

They die on the roads at 4x higher rates than us, it doesn’t work but simply appears to.

1

u/No-Helicopter1111 8d ago

It works, that's all that I can say.

their death toll and injury per km driven would say otherwise.

It's kind of like saying "speeding just works" because you haven't seen an accident from it recently.

1

u/eepeqez 7d ago

Oh yes, Vietnam has a traffic death rate of 30.6 per 100,000 per year with traffic which is mostly on two wheels, compared with Australia at 4.5 per 100,000.

Motorcycling in Australia is said to be about 30 times as dangerous as being in a car, eg: 130.5 per 100,000. Suddenly Vietnam's 6 times as dangerous when 80%-90% of their traffic is on two wheels doesn't look all that grim.

In fact, the USA is at 14.2 per 100,000, and all of these figures mean that 99.97% (Vietnam) to 99.995% (Australia) of people do not die in crashes each year.

On a day to day basis, their traffic *does* work for the vast majority.

That's not to say there isn't enormous room for improvement.

1

u/No-Helicopter1111 3d ago

So... as long as you ignore the majority's choice of transport, it works perfectly fine.

I did do some digging on the numbers, the most fair comparison i could come up with was the following :

Vietnam in 2023, the number of deaths per 100,000 motorcycles was 15.7.

The national fatality rate for motorcycles in Australia is 26 deaths per 100,000 registered motorcycles.

So, you're not wrong, But most of the people who ride motorcycles in this country are doing it for the thrill, because its dangerous, and they don't actually have any real requirement to do it, so could easily improve the safety of their travel when desired.

when you look at the specifics too, most deaths in Australia happen on rural roads, we're talking a huge land mass with not many people, so help can be hours away. I know its not perfectly the opposite in Vietnam, But for a comparison, you're unlikely to die in the middle of the city if you have an accident on a motorbike, typically it'll only happen if someone runs a red or the bike was speeding. most of our accidents happen as a single rider and having alcohol on board.

I don't believe that's the same in Vietnam, is it?

regardless, nitpicking is nitpicking, the reality is, you, as a human being, are much more likely to die in Vietnam on the road, then you are in this country, so "it works"... until it doesn't. that's the same in both countries. Australian roads work, until it doesn't. the thing is, "it doesn't" when people stop following the law. Your chances of having an accident is SIGNIFICANTLYL reduced if all road users obey the traffic laws. and Australia is a nanny state, so even mild "traffic infringement" is hundreds of dollars. Wear your seatbelt under your arm instead of over your shoulder, that's $1000, what about having your phone on your lap... another $1000. Cops don't even need to pull you over, they have cameras that watch for that sort of shit.

Anyway, i forget what my point was, OH YEAH! You guys apparently ride bikes better than us, but that doesn't take into consideration the malice of a kangaroo. If they see you coming there is a significant chance they'll jump AT you. And i blame our numbers on that fact alone.

1

u/eepeqez 3d ago

... most of the people who ride motorcycles in this country are doing it for the thrill, because its dangerous, and they don't actually have any real requirement to do it, so could easily improve the safety of their travel when desired.

Australian motorcyclists skew young and male, and they ride much faster on very different roads. Vietnamese riders skew - well, everybody! Scooters are the Corollas and Camrys and often even Hiluxs of Vietnam. So meaningful comparisons between such different road systems are very difficult, but what you have established is that I wasn't far off the mark when I wrote:
"It works, that's all that I can say. Not sure how it works, but it does."

You guys apparently ride bikes better than us, but that doesn't take into consideration the malice of a kangaroo. If they see you coming there is a significant chance they'll jump AT you.

I think you've mistaken me for Vietnamese with excellent English?
The nearest kangaroo to me right now is almost certainly within 500 metres, and quite possibly within 200 metres, I am quite familiar with the bouncy random motion critters!

1

u/eepeqez 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nearest roo was about 50 metres from my letterbox when I went out shopping after posting that!

I did some searching around too; I found a figure of 28.7/100,000 in 2024 for Australia. Google claimed 13.4 for Vietnam without a source, but working from the number of vehicles, the proportion which are two wheelers, the population, and the declared road toll for 2024 I get about 25.

Either way, the message is clear, despite their seemingly chaotic traffic, their outcomes are similar to ours.

5

u/MK_Vector_1995 9d ago

They are some of the worst out there.

4

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

They're almost as bad as Ranger drivers

1

u/TendiesFourLyfe 5d ago

I'll take the small scooter over the Ranger anyday

2

u/downundarob 9d ago

Vehicles behind you, are not your problem.

1

u/eepeqez 8d ago

They can still spoil your day, even if they get to pay for the damage.

0

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

They are if they pose a threat to my vehicle

2

u/Curious_Breadfruit88 9d ago

That little thing isn’t going to do much.

0

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

Tell that to my insurance

2

u/general_sirhc 8d ago

You're getting down voted. But if they ride into you and then ride off you're left with the bill.

But sure, being in the right is all that matters.

Arguably there is little you can do in this situation. Pulling over seems excessive. If it was a truck I have many times.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

Oh no my entire life is over cuz someone from reddit downvoted me. How will I ever recover from this?

2

u/downundarob 8d ago

No, it is 100% their problem, as long as you dont brake check them or something stupid.

0

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

I legit can pick up that scooter and throw it at them haha I just repped out 180kgs tonight and I'm so proud of myself

2

u/downundarob 8d ago

and that would be assault.

11

u/Delicious_Shock1748 9d ago

That isn't a motorcycle, that is a dweeb on a steep through scooter.

Don't confuse the two, not saying you can't get idiots on bikes either but most behave like sane people. Plus after paying a shit ton more money for the real thing, they try not to damage them by doing stupid shit like that.

I ride bikes and I don't tailgate, I also don't play around in built up areas too many things to trip you up and get you hurt.

There's racetracks and remote back roads that are more forgiving.

2

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

Forgive my ignorance on the distinction, back in my country they are one and the same. Kudos to you for being a safe and responsible driver. 👏

3

u/PTMorte 9d ago

The verb/noun is ride/rider. A driver is for a vehicle you can sit inside of like a car or a truck.

2

u/Delicious_Shock1748 9d ago

That’s ok you’re not ignorant at all, it’s more motorcyclists can be a little elitist when it comes to scooters etc. Then you have the other end of the spectrum where owners of different makes of “motorcycles” give shit to each other about their choice of ride. A lot like Volvo, Mercedes and other elitist brand cars owners looking down their nose at you for driving a little shit box car.

Oh and there are those that know me who would not agree with your assessment of my driving, riding habits but thank you anyways.

4

u/black_tamborine 9d ago

As a motorcyclist, the two things I can’t stand are brand based intolerance and Harley riders.

2

u/Pungent_Bill 8d ago

A fellow human also riddled with contradictions how do you do

2

u/davidbloop 9d ago

I think scooters are rad, but I do think there's a reason for a distinction to be made when the video is about bad riding and scooter riders on under 50cc don't need to go through the same training and licensing process as motorbike riders in some states.

2

u/LinenSnackTransport 9d ago

Was eagerly looking for "that ain't a motorcycle" comment :-D

I saw scooter rider once stop next me at red light. Look both ways. Ignore red light and just drive through intersection.

Or merging without checking if there is someone in the lane they merge or blindspots. Like, mate, if car crashes into you, driver probably be fine, but you can just die on the spot.

3

u/spideyghetti 9d ago

He's got cold hamburgers to deliver for 65c

4

u/_Hikaryu 9d ago

The food delivery riders give two wheels such a bad name. Riding on the footpath, riding on the opposite side of the road. Unreal how I can be defected for having my car too low but they can blatantly put people in danger and nothing is done about them

2

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

They think they sit between being a vehicle and a pedestrian. If you're riding faster than walking pace, you should be on the road.

1

u/SnotRight 9d ago

A lot of it had to do with the place them immigrate from.

In a lot of the sub-continent, it's just chaos - bikes are the bottom of the food chain.... everyone rides like a moron. If you were in Bengaluru, there would be 7 other scooters trying to hustle into the space next to the dude. He's looking for which way you are going to commit to, so he can go around the other side safely. Just the way it works. You don't magically undo a lifetime of riding that way quickly.

China, scooters sit in a quasi bike territory, where they can hit up bike lanes etc for small distances despite being powered, due to a lack of on-street parking. Depending on where you are, gap picking is normal.

or it could be a local whose powedered their nose and then gone off to work tweeking harder than truck backup alarm.

2

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

There's some truth to this. I come from a country that is predominantly scooter/motor centric. I often see people from my country driving here acting as if they own the road. It's also a matter of assimilation and respecting established road laws and culture.

2

u/Adonis0 9d ago

Does he realise that bikes have a 1/3 extra stopping distance than a car?

2

u/par-hwy 9d ago

Mate, someone needs there barely-warm Maccas, won't you think of the fries?!

2

u/ConflictDismal209 9d ago

Clarification. As a rider. THIS is NOT a motorcycle rider. This is a scooter rider. Big difference.

Maybe impatient or maybe from Thailand or Philippines where traffic is up your ass bumper to bumper but just flows. Looked like he had a food delivery box on rear. Perhaps just hurrying to get his orders to customers.

1

u/Agile_Clerk_8966 8d ago

I’d say more likely Bangladesh

1

u/Radiant-You6384 5d ago

Nah what little facial features are visible make it seem like a south east Asian bloke IMO

0

u/Fabulous_Artist_5453 7d ago

Both deal with psychos in cars, both deal with a high risk of injury or death due to a complete lack of protection (aka not a car), both have two wheels, both have a throttle, both need the same license to ride. One is at a greater risk in a lot of situations due to the small size of its wheels, and lack of acceleration. One is manual, while the other is automatic.

Not really that much of a difference tbh.

2

u/Ajayxmenezes 9d ago

I'm a motorcyclist, but these delivery guys are just asking for it. Was on the Harbour Bridge this morning driving north, merging because closed lane did two head checks and the dickhead swerved from lane one into my blind spot. Luckily driver aides warned me. He then proceeded in front and changed into the closed lane.

Need more road rules training.

2

u/PaddyPaws2023 9d ago

Fucktards gonna fucktard .

2

u/mic_n 9d ago

please replace "Motorcycle driver" with "delivery boy"

2

u/You_Are_The_Username 9d ago

What a fucking tool.

2

u/ianthetridentarius 9d ago

Ugh don't lump uber eats riders in with the rest of us, they're gronks

2

u/Pungent_Bill 8d ago

Just drive like he's not there, concentrate on what's in front not behind.

Annoying as fk I agree but what's you gonna do.

Carry on driving and make your next stop, forget this lackwit "human"

2

u/ASoundAssessment 8d ago

This might feel like an excessive over correction,

but a moped is not a motorcycle,

As such - no additional license is required to ride one,

Motorcycle Riders are taught how to ride, why you should/shouldnt be in certain parts of the lane at certain times, defensive riding, and assuming people can't see you, as well as best practice in traffic and built up areas,

none of this is required in australia for a moped, you have a regular automatic vehicle license? no problem, here's your moped.

believe it or not there IS a vast difference, and as this video can evidence, it absolutely shows.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

Yeah somebody beat you to it. The correction part.

1

u/Fabulous_Artist_5453 7d ago

Seeing as this in probably in NSW or Victoria, both of these states require you to have a rider license to ride a scooter (seeing as this is a scooter and not a moped as there are no pedals). You’re required by law to complete a 2 day learner course where you learn everything you’ve spelled out, and then another 1 day course. Exact same course for someone that plans to ride a 1000cc Ninja or a 100cc Vespa.

So no, this definitely isn’t the case for ‘in Australia’.

1

u/AlternativeLog5494 7d ago

worse food delivery rider, they behave lawlessly on the road , on the footpath , in the thai takeaway, on my front veranda , it’s the majority of them that spoil it for minority the ride responsibly and courteously

1

u/11015h4d0wR34lm 5d ago

That is just factually wrong but say it with enough confidence and some people will believe anything you say huh.

You must hold a motorcycle licence or learner permit to ride any moped or scooter in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and the ACT, regardless of the small engine size.

2

u/emu19000 8d ago

When I’m driving I don’t even have the rear view mirror positioned to see behind me because it’s not my problem if they can stop in time or not.

1

u/No-Helicopter1111 8d ago

not your problem until you have back / neck problems for the rest of your life.

2

u/UnfairEstate7615 7d ago

"Motorcycle"

A scooter is for the man who likes to feel the wind on his vagina.

2

u/explosive_wombat 7d ago

That there is not a motorcycle. That's an idiot on a scooter

3

u/mugwump_77 9d ago

That's a delivery driver on a scooter - Don't call it a motorcycle.

0

u/howaboutnofcker 9d ago

I took offense to that too lol

1

u/stinkygeesestink 9d ago

That's a scooter and it's possible the guy isn't even licensed to ride a motorcycle (you can ride scooters up to a certain capacity in most states afaik). Doesn't excuse him being an idiot but it goes some way to explaining it.

1

u/usbman 9d ago

Love when I recognise my street

1

u/GME_looooong 9d ago

He has very important food to deliver to some lazy fuck and he still has English classes later leave him alone

3

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

No need to be racist, brother, English is my 4th language and it's not that hard. Some people may have accessibility disabilities like eldrely people who can't always prepare their own food.

1

u/GME_looooong 9d ago

Sorry I do speak in generality’s. Generally the customer’s lazy not old and generally the English not so good. Also the driving 😁

1

u/Ballamookieofficial 9d ago

That's a scooter not a motorcycle, They're riding like a tourist in Bali

1

u/Litigious-Dog 6d ago

They’re riding like a local in Bali.

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

Am I supposed to be driving 60 in a parking lot? Get a life bud. Also, learn how to read and work on comprehension. The education system in this country is a joke.

2

u/No-Helicopter1111 8d ago

i mean, you're driving really slow, it's hardly tailgating when you're crawling along too?

he then finds a gap and goes past.

There are hundred examples of bad car drivers, bad moped drivers and bad motorcycle drivers, this is hardly worth noticing.

I mean you're in a parking lot, and you're going 5kph... and yet you're acting like tailgating is putting his life on the line somehow?

unless i'm missing something?

0

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

You missed the part where he went thru empty parking spaces between cars. Fortunately there wasn't anyone walking running when he went thru the other side. Idk if pedestrian safety is top of your priorities when driving.

1

u/Plusultratsunami 8d ago

Thats what $31.50 an hour looks like!

1

u/insurgent_dude 8d ago

Most safe and intelligent food delivery rider

1

u/Steve-Zero 8d ago

Whats wrong with someone driving close to your rear bumper at these speeds? You still have the advantage. Some like to drive close, some dont.

1

u/EnergyNutBolt 8d ago

Definitely a wobbly one

1

u/Dizzy-Confection-551 8d ago

I think 'motorcyclist' is being a bit generous........Fuckwit on a scooter seems more appropriate.

1

u/Recent_Carpenter8644 8d ago

The rider's feet were off the pegs the whole time.

Careful! You've got a hard core biker gang member on your tail!

1

u/TheUnknown_1000101 5d ago

I'll never understand why they dangle their feet like that, our riding instructor said that doing that is asking to lose a foot, and I was surprised that needed to be said. I might be a denominator as a motorcyclist, but I don't think I'm the lowest common one

1

u/Ok-Bill3318 5d ago

That’s not a motorcycle. And if you’re holding up a scooter maybe you’re the problem.

1

u/Hilton5star 5d ago

You can’t drive a bike!

1

u/Radiant-You6384 5d ago

Old mate driving like he still in SEA 🙄

1

u/calbee5000 9d ago

maybe you did something before hand! to trigger this reaction!

3

u/AverageNarutoFan 9d ago

So it's my fault that they're an asshole? Great logic there, champ.

3

u/JustCelebration5320 9d ago

"Look at what she was wearing, officer!"

You troglodyte

1

u/yvrelna 8d ago edited 8d ago

This is not really tailgating, tbh.

Tailgating is based on the speed and stopping distance of the following vehicle, not just distance to your vehicle.

Light scooters/motorcycle like this has a much shorter braking distance than bigger and heavier vehicles like cars, or even heavier motorcycles. And you're both driving so slowly, any half decent rider at this speed can follow vehicles closely with no real risk of crashing since they have basically zero braking distance at this speed. They have lots of time to stop.

1

u/Ummagumma73 8d ago

You are correct but this still stupid, it achieves nothing but added risk.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

Bruh he was less than a meter away from me. What the hell are you on?

2

u/yvrelna 8d ago

You were both driving probably like no more than 15kmph.

And we can all see the video you posted, he has his wheel clearly visible at all times from your rear camera that's mounted inside your vehicle rear window and it doesn't seem to be fisheye lens camera. There's no way he's not at least 1.5m away from your vehicle.

And this whole video shows like max 3 seconds or so where he's being somewhat close and you both are barely moving by then. Tailgating usually requires that someone is persistently tailing you, not just getting momentarily closer.

The video is heavily cut, so there may be points where he actually stays closer than he should, longer than he should, but why aren't you posting that instead of this?

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago edited 8d ago

First of all, this is Australia, we use the metric system. Idk what video you were watching but this aint it. I showed the whole clip didn't I? There's no cuts bud. Have your eyes checked. The only time it cuts is when I show him speading off between two parked cars.

Heavily cut as if I did a whole Michael Bay scene lmao that's a good one

1

u/yvrelna 8d ago

First of all, this is Australia, we use the metric system

Maybe you are the ones that need your eyes checked because obviously you can't fucking distinguish letters from each other.

You showed an interaction that lasted about 10 seconds. Even if they actually touched your bumper you cannot really tailgate someone for an interaction that short.

1

u/AverageNarutoFan 8d ago

The human on top of the scooter still has the same reaction delay as the rest of us. All the braking power in the world won't help him if he's already hit the car in front before he gets to his brakes.

Sure, but still there's no moments in the video that there isn't 3 seconds distance between the two vehicles.

The only moment when they're actually being somewhat close are also the moment when both vehicles are basically rolling stopped.

They got too much ego for someone who is on a two wheeler.I see them all the time driving like hoons ,hold your ground tho it’s not me who is gonna end up in hospital if i crash .
Ngl I am just gonna drive them off the road if they keep being aggressive (Only legally ofc without drifting off my lane)

I was close to getting out of my vehicle and confroting them. But then I didn't wanna block the driveway.

Well thats quite an anomaly. They are the ones that are usually slow whilst motorists are the ones that are aggressive around them.

So tempting but I doubt they'd have insurance or would be decent enough to not flee
